Both looking well Will. For me - the first 1. But you know as well as the rest of us, it is all subjective.
They are both gorgeous 🎉 but I lean towards the color and reflection of the first image. Spectacular! And maybe a closeup of the rays and the atmosphere from the second shot! EPlC! ❤

Looks like we as viewers are as torn as you are about selecting a favorite! :) My preference is the first one. It speaks to me more. Thank you for teaching us to "see" and experience. Many photographers can teach how to select settings and general composition, but it is a very rare gift to be able to teach others how to see and experience nature, and then to be able to capture it, bring it home, bring out all the goodness from the image and share it with others so that they too can experience where you were in that moment (physically and emotionally). Thank you Will.

Definitely the 1st one. If both were hanging on my wall I'd spend more time looking at the 1st one as there is a lot to see in it. I like the warm sky, the reflections and the green foliage. In the 2nd one my eye goes straight to the sun and after examining the sunbeams it doesn't really go anywhere else. I really like your channel and have learnt a lot from it.

#WilliamPatino 6am in the UK with a coffee in my hand, what a wonderful start to the day. I’m used to clouds with the odd beam of light so second one appeals to me. I like the diagonal balance between top right and bottom left and the general minimalism in that shot compared to the other. Thank you.

I prefer the second one. Future ideas, I loved your Kea in the landscape shots. Maybe you could find some more NZ birds in their landscape, or seascape? You could go to Tongariro nat park in winter and see if you can get the 3 peaks in a shot. You could do a video for less able people on ideas for researching locations and photographing landscapes from the roadside, or see what you can capture that's a bit different in known locations that visitors with limited time frequent as they are travelling through. Also, down on the south coast from you there's some interesting places that are less well visited if you want to try different scenes, or you could do a series on the South Island passes over time, Haast, Lewis, Arthur's, for photographers who have a short visit to New Zealand. There's some interesting colours in the landscape around Cromwell and deep gorges in some of those areas. Technically, your use of bracketing and focus stacking settings, which I know you have covered, but I am sure would be useful again out in the field. Some of the above obviously involve travel, but maybe stick them on an ideas list , Caroline

I am voting for the first one (without rays of sunlight). I think it is more interesting. IMHO it would benefit from changing the color of those yellow/orange clouds to something more complementary to the foreground. Thanks for sharing.

I’m partial to the first one with the smooth reflection in the water, the rich orange tones in the sun and cloud and the composition.
I see what you’re saying about the second photo and the blue and green contrasting. And the beams of light. But you have other shots that have better beams of light washing down in sheets and streams.
I think the first one tells such a beautiful story of the rich morning light overshadowing the rich blues and greens of dawn. It’s a story of transition. Both photos are stunning. Good luck selecting just one. I Love your process and beautiful spirit. I subscribed.

I would choose the 2nd image because of it's unique quality (the 1st is the type more often seen, I think).

Both spectacular in their own right. Love the colour in the clouds and also love the sun beams in the second one. These are the sunrises I see on my way to work and can't stop to get that image!! Keep up the great work

Personally I like the first one. I like the sky more with the warm colors, the foreground is better in my eyes and I like that you can see those 3 islands in the right hand side. I think it makes the photo more balanced, but that’s just me.

* Could you please create a video detailing your process for planning hikes or your approach to photographing specific locations using tools like topo maps or Google Earth? I believe many viewers, including myself, would find this information valuable and insightful.
* As someone new to camping, I'm interested in purchasing essential camping gear. Could you recommend the best and most essential items required for camping? Similar to how you've showcased your camera gear, I would appreciate a rundown of your camping essentials.
* Lastly, could you discuss the gear you typically carry when filming vlogs during hikes, and how you utilise them to create your videos? Understanding your equipment setup and workflow would be very enlightening for aspiring vloggers.

I was brainstorming topics today, and why landscape photography was one that I considered, then to see this title show up in my feed! Crazy!
Great video! As for the pictures, I sort of lean towards the first one. I like the reflections and for some reason I feel like the foreground is more complementing than in the second. (though, after you cropped the 2nd one, I think that made it stronger and a much tougher decision).

The rays and feel of the beams photo is great but the reflection in the water on the first one is 🤌🏼 maybe on canvas the first one could work really well. Both top shelf.

The two frames you're showing here... well, wouldn't say it's a matter of choice, as to me, they are two different frames. Even though taken during the same morning and you photographed the same location ;). I guess it's my "photographic philosophy" spoken up, but having in mind the light changing and different composition plus a bit different post-processing give us two diifferent frames. Basically speaking time/conditions/lightning/composition-diffrences make them two separate and totally different photos. But that's me on this ;).
Anyway, have one case here for you, which I'm a bit crazy about and could an interesting topic to bring here in the future... And I could even come up with the title of the new video :)
Here it is: "Go wider than one frame - Go panorama baby" :)!
I know most of us use wide angle lenses and try to fit the landscape into it. But what you don't have a wide angle lens? Does it mean you can't shoo wide angle? My wide angle lens starts at 24mm and that's it... there's nothing else apart the zoom lens in backpack.
Another words, on some occasions you simple realize (that would be me for example), it's not wide enough. And when you see the frame in the camera, you feel it's too tight... There are other, also important aspects while taking panoramic shots... composition - not so obvious and clear when taking a single shot, merging = make sure the frames are properly captured so the Photoshop will put them together properly... Should Igo horizontal or vertical? And so one...
Sometimes I go crazy... or I should say too crazy... :). But it's necessary sometimes.
I said something there on my IG profile @hubert.fotografia and showed the example of 4 horizontal panoramas merged into one. Not an easy process but the final result was quite satisfying ;).

I came up with the idea as I'm just curious what's your approach to the topic. Maybe I and the others could learn something new, different about "panoramic photography" ;)?
In the meantime, awaiting your wideo in the subject of panoramic shots, your expierience, do you find it easy?

I would try to blend inn the reflections of the first one in the second picture and so get the perfect photo.
Hi Will. You asked for possible ideas for your future videos. We all have some reject photos that we are 90% happy with but have trouble completing due to something being 'not quite right'. I was just wondering if you could choose a few subscribers who could then send you one of their shots, with a description on where they are having trouble, so that you could help step them through a possible solution. I'll start if you like, I have a draw full. ( P.S. I'm on the fence, the 2nd image for me but the smooth water did look better however )
Even if its for patrons, ill join that for sure. Just to learn some finer ways to bring out that missing piece.
That main image you came away with that has the sunbeams coming doing in the fiord with the cloud either side is spectacular. Regarding the other two images I would have to agree with
@WhozitsWhatzits. Also the reflection in the water draws the eye in. I would however prefer to see the immediate fg around the same exposure amount as that main image. I thought the evening shoot was great but your main image taken in the morning is a winner.

Thank you for sharing William. Coming from the Netherlands I would probably just be sitting there in awe and forgetting to take any pictures 😅 I would go for number two. These sun beams give a special and strong presence to this picture, and I love how they are lighting up the foreground. For me this one conveys a calmness that is lacking in number one. Both are epic in there own way though. 💪🏻 Maybe give it a week before making a decision?

The first one with the reflections is better. The beams are great in the second one but everything else is rather a bland mesh.

Definitely the second one William, the light ray’s really pull the eye into the image, I would tend to desaturate the orange in the 1st image. Just my thoughts, as I said in the previous video what an amazing location. I’ve started using the brush a lot more with my editing so thank you for sharing that knowledge. Look forward to seeing the next adventure.

Hey Will, watching this makes me want to get out there even more, that and come to NZ to experience that wonder. 2nd pic for me is the stronger comp, more prominent subject and stronger focal point as a result. Great vid as always.

Great video. The second one had the eye travel straight to the "main subject" for me, being the sunbeams and the nice cone shaped mountain behind that. Whereas the first one although I really liked the colour and the whole vista, my eyes didn't settle quite as well on the subject. In saying that, I'd give my eye teeth for an image like that :) Thanks for the adventures through your videos!

I would be ecstatic to have captured either shot , but I think I prefer the second photo with the sunbeams. The reflection in the first shot is a nice reflection, but it is a bit distracting to me. I love your videos. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful video, Will. I think the second photo stands out. The dominant central focus with clear balance split off left and right of the rays. Beautiful shots both ways, and no doubt a tough one to say which is better. Cheers!

I prefer the first image, it has more going for it overall. Whereas for the 2nd one, ONLY the "beams" are the "showstopper". In a simpler landscape/location, that could/would be enough.
But since it's a wide-angle/expansive landscape shot, I feel like more than just a tiny portion (the beams) need to be drawing you into the frame/image.
So I like the first image with the colors (spanning the entire sky), the epic landscape, the reflection in the water, etc.
Both are great, I'm just partial to the first image. Thats my 2 cents 😅.

I would go for the 2nd image. In comparison, the first one feels too busy to me and the sky is rather distracting. But man, your work is incredible!!!

I'm with you on the sunbeams as the pic of the day. As for the last two, I do prefer the orange sky by itself, but I don't think it matches too well with the rest of the scene and it seems a little too bright along the top of the frame. Maybe some edits could pull the viewers attention back into the frame but then it would probably start to look unnatural.

Not that i have a leg to stand on being new to photography. But the first image, i find the reflection helps carry the viewer through the image more as the second one kind of has a dead spot, due to the flatness of the water if that makes any sense 🙂

2nd for me. The lean of the tree into the frame. I think the foreground whites distract in the foreground in frame one.
Overal I personally prefer the one on the left as you can see the mountains more and I prefer the reflection in the water.
The one on the right with the sun beam is nice too but I feel it takes away the depth of the landscape.

Personally I prefer the 1st image. I'm a sucker for colour and reflections. The 2nd image , although it has gorgeous light beams has little colour or reflection. Just my opinion.

I can't do it, I'm in awe, handheld photography, the tripod is so cool, such a beautiful job, I don't understand at all why you're shooting handheld
Haha, why would I be using a tripod? I’m not shooting astro. Handheld is so much more enjoyable and organic for composing scenes. Cheers 😊🙏🏻
you don't have to take astro pictures, it's about the ease of having your hands free and reacting in time, using so many beautiful long times. And you can't. I mean really long times a minute or more. Focus stacking from the hand is also not quite possible. You draw a lot from the shadows. I love working from a tripod. Even if I have to carry him on my back. Good light!@@WilliamPatinoPhotography

Really great to hear from you mate! Whenever I find myself having 3-4 cups of coffee a day, I still chuckle at how many you said you and your wife consume, lol. I'm using the f/2.8 version of the lens. Bit sharper than the f/4 and it can then double as an astro lens too. Keep in touch, it would be awesome to have you on a trip again :)
I like the color in the first one but there might bee too much going on in the scene. The second one does have a much more clear focus point. I'm sorry, but I'm no help, I'm torn too!

Hi William, For future content if you get a chance. Can you do a vid on editing an image that is more a closeup shot. I have this image, i love but for the life of me i just cant edit it correctly. It's a simple image shot with a sony zve10 on the 16 - 50 mm kit lens of tree roots in a stream at mt warning NSW where i live. Not much foreground or back ground to play with. Happy to send you the raw to better understand what i'm trying to say. Sorry absolute newbie, but there is something about the raw un touched that i like about it without editing it Although grey and plain in tones etc.
Thanks. More of an intimate scene. These generally require very little work, as they are simple by nature. A few contrast adjustments on the curve can often just about do it!
Thanks for the info, 2 Questions.... Have you ever had that one image, that was just right as the raw image? We often get caught up in bringing out highlights and shadows or over all editing that we often forget simple can be better. Some photographers it's not even the same image in the end as some have taken to over use of generative fixing to far. 🙂Second Question, Your dream camera and gear if unlimited funds, what would it be?@@WilliamPatinoPhotography

I do have a video on photographing the local park and when you don’t have much to work with. Posted about a year ago. But yes, it’s going to be easier to make a nice photo when you have nice subject matter.
