Just found your channel. I’ve known about Colocasia for a long time but had not found a source here in Central Pa. This year I saw them at Lowe’s and picked up two tubers/bulbs of the Gigantea. I planted them adding a generous amount of Epsom Salts(magnesium) and worm castings. I planted at the end of May and by August they were five feet tall. They are absolutely gorgeous and looking forward to next year.
Such a great video!! I am a novice gardener here in Houston so this was majorly helpful. I just planted my first elephant ear bulb in a pot since I’m an apartment balcony gardener. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼🌱💕
Thank you for rhe video! I am so happy to see someone growing Myan Mask. That was my first elephant ear and it was stunning 🎉❤ I dont often see it talked about online.
Excellent. Just what I needed to know about growing outdoor. ❤🎉🎉🎉. I thought I'd lost an alocasia Stingray indoors. It looked dead, so I placed the pot in the garden hidden by ferns. The following spring, while tending to the fern area, I discovered the hidden pot. It had a tiny leaf and sure enough, it was a stingray. I brought the tiny thing indoors and to my surprise another plant surfaces beside it. It's doing really well even though it is now really bushy the leaves are yet to grow larger than my hand. None the less, it's so healthy and , fingers crossed None have died. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
So glad I found your channel! Newbie plant mom here and I never knew I could have such variety with part shade and full shade light. The next sprout will stay protected from freeze and spout earlier then ones cut at the base. By the way nice video and great yard.

The little troopers are are coming back but because they were 6 feet tall and the new growth is now about 2 feet from the ground I have some big open spaces. Going to plant about 10 elephant ears to fill the spaces this summer. Next year I will let them fight it out. Big back yard I try to keep looking tropical. 4 of my 8 fan palms are showing life, the other 4, still waiting.

I bought what were supposed to be the “regular” EEs and they all grew as big as what you’re thinking is gigantea. I don’t know if they just like my dirt, but they grew to 4-5 feet tall and huge leaves. My Filipino neighbor got very excited because she recognized them as Taro, which she didn’t know would grow here (I’m in Katy). My taro got as big as my Jack’s giants; to only way you could tell the difference was the Jack’s had much bigger corms. If I had pictures I would send you a few, but I never took them. I’m afraid I’m starting over from scratch this year, because I had asked my handyman to weed the bed- showed him what was not a weed and what was- and for some reason he decided my EEs were all dead and he pulled them up. I was furious because I had showed him exactly what to pull out. He even cut my Jack’s Giant corms in half because he couldn’t get them out easily. I was sad for a week, then started looking at EEs online and planning to start over. You have some beautiful plants. Have you been successful at getting mojito to grow? I’ve tried twice and they were just too tender. I was sad.
Oh my, how awful about the handyman!!! Were you able to salvage any of them?! I still don’t truly know what mine are but they’re great! So, I have the Illustris variety, not mojitos, and they’ve proven to be very hardy & they multiply quickly!
Did you have to prop up the stalks/leaves on the Gigantea's? I'm in Houston also. Have a potted Alocacia on a patio, facing south. Had to keep them half in and out of full sun. Had some dead leaf tips and some edges. I should have watered it more, but was afraid of root rot. Several different plants in same pot. Going to transplant some of the smaller ones. What fertilizer do you use? I've been using Arborgates Organic plant food for all my plants.
I would love a care tip video for colocasias! 😍 I think I have a gigantea too and this whole time I’ve been trying to grow it indoors and starting to think maybe it’ll do better outside but I’m worried about winter (I live in north California but lately the winters have been getting colder). I’m still confused what kind of soil they like and how much water since I keep mine in a pot
It should do fine inside! It loves water but really doesn’t care what kind of soil it’s in!!! They’ll grow pretty much anywhere! In a pot I water them 1-2 times a week. It’ll need bright light to grow best.
I love this video so much!!!! My grandma had huge colocasia plants and I always loved them. I hope to create a nice corner and collect a few again ♥ Beautiful video!
@@KrazyPlantLadys There are so many varieties out there! Google lens is helpful sometimes but you may just have to look at various pics to find your plant!
You are so chill! We're beginning our elephant ear planting journy here in Okinawa, Japan. There are tons of these in the jungle around our land I was planning on digging some up however my friend said they may be poisonous. Are you familiar with the poisonous variety?
How exciting! All elephant ears can cause GI irritation to humans & animals if eaten. They can also cause a rash & burning if the liquid gets on your skin during pruning. Many people eat the Taro root (and the leaves) but all of it needs to be cooked properly so it’s not poisonous. So in most situations, it’s not considered poisonous to grow it for aesthetic purposes (just take care when pruning).
My caladiums are just starting to come up. They definitely take a while to come up. It’s taken so long they appearing in places i forgot i planted them 😂🪴
Thats how I found my giants too. At first I thought "Hmmmm a banana tree, I am taking you home". I literally screamed when I pulled it free from under the leaf pile and it still had its leaves. I made concrete castings from the leaves 24 x 39 inch monsters. Thank you for your informative video.
I’m new to growing, and purchased a Colocasia Black Magic for my landscape. After moving to the area to be planted in ground, they began to develop brown spots. I’m so bummed. Any suggestions? I’m local, in Beaumont, TX.
Are they brown spots all over on each leaf? If so, that’s most likely rust & you should spray a Copper Fungicide to get rid of it. If it’s just browning/yellowing of some leaves just chop those off & it’ll regrow new ones.
Great video, gorgeous plants! I just got my first (it’s purple!) at a greenhouse. Would it do well in a duck pond? I’ve seen some people grow them in water. (It’s just a tiny pond in my garden)
Yeah! I haven’t personally planted them in a pond but I know they’ll do well. Do a little search on how to plant them there bc I think there’s a certain way to do it. Good luck!!!
I have new elephant ears and it has sent out a long shoot about a metre long 3 and a half feet long that lays across the ground and it is in a pot on gravel. Is it a new shoot? Should l put it next to soil so it can grow. It also has a flower spike, which l didn't realise it can do?
Yes, many types send out runners which become new plants. It’s up to you if you want it to colonize somewhere then putting it in the ground would be the way to go. If it’s sending runners out of the pot, does it appear to have outgrown its pot? And yes, mine flower often :)
I have been trying to get the proper name of of the regular colacasia , you said it was a esculente ? Are you positive? I’m seeing on the internet the Elephant ear ears with wavy sides is that name. Someone please help
So the ones I call “regular” that are more pointy downward shaped are technically xanthosoma sagittifolim, i only later learned that and I edited my description to note it. They are different in that the base of the leaf separates where the stem comes out, whereas colocasia has more leaf behind where the stem comes out and it’s not separated. It’s hard to explain without a picture but I hope this helps.
Can GAINT Alocassisias grow in partially shaded region... Please let me know.... & Thank you for sharing simple description on Colocassia & alocassisia...
I was so excited to plant some of these and currently have 4 pots of them started that I bought last week! However, I just found out that they can be very poisionous to pets, kids and people--causing many problems for many people writing in to the Gardening channel.. Gosh, I am so bummed out- was really looking forward to growing them, but with my dogs, I am not sure that it would be worth potential issues, if they were to find a leaf on the ground and chew it.. Anyone have any feedback to this??
I just bought a colacasia gigantea from a local nursery. It hates this Texas heat. It must be used to being inside. Every time I take it out, it goes limp and turns yellow. Do you have any tips for revival ?
@@MommaKong7 it needs a lot of water in the heat of the summer here. I’d slowly introduce it to more and more sun but don’t plant it in ground until fall, so it has an easier time adjusting. They’re resilient though so even if it lost all its leaves, it’ll grow more :)
I found this video so helpful. I recently got a Colocasia teacup or coffee cup as some call it. It was labeled as an allocation so I thought it was maybe a dark star or a black stem which I've heard do well indoors but I don't know much about the teacups I've heard their perennials and I'm afraid it's not going to be a good house plant 😕
You can definitely grow it indoors! It does love humidity though, so put a layer of rock/pebbles on the saucer under the pot to help with that. Then mist it often too. Indirect light is best and it should do well! It would love the bathroom if you have good light there!
I want to try the black diamond and white lava, but don't want to waste time and money. I'm originally from Beaumont, TX, near you but now in Dallas...we get a lot of dry summer heat versus the humidity I was so used to back home. would you try those two? My growing area is all full sun🥵
The Diamondheads can definitely take the sun but the white lava would prefer some shade in the hot afternoons. As long as you can water them well, I don’t see that being a problem!
@@planttodaywithamyrae thanks. I'll stick with the diamond heads since my area is full sun and forego the white lava. My wife works from home and can water frequently or set the irrigation to do so.
Beautiful garden! I've subscribed. Where I live nurseries don't offer colocasia, however I can find Taro roots in the grocery markets occasionally. Will Taro root (planted correctly) give me these big beautiful leaves?? Thanks!
@@planttodaywithamyrae Oh, terrific! I'm going to give it a try then. I live in Jerusalem Israel and went to 5,6 nurseries, and none of them carry them. We're 9b so they should be a good here. My guess is that since we've usually had water shortages here people didn't plant them because they like to drink! In the past 5-10 years we've pretty much solved our water problems by desalinization, so it'll be interesting if gardening habits will change. Love everything in your garden, are those stromanthe? I only know the indoor type, those are magnificent!
@@letXeqX oh how fascinating, I’d love to visit there one day! I do have a small stromanthe out there but you’re probably referring to the large variegated ginger 🙂

Wow 4 is a lot! Yes mine also flower but I’ve never “assisted” them to pollinate & so no I haven’t gotten seeds. From what I read, they don’t pollinate very often and they need a little bit of assistance.
@@jacelandadventures1523 Not all colocasia are full sun, many of them prefer a more part Sun location in the hottest part of the day. It’s a bit of trial and error depending on your location.
I plant the bulb up to the neck. The bulb naturally starts to rise up after a year or so, it just kind of does what it wants. I do try to mulch heavily in winter but they all came back after we had a few days of 20 degree weather.

It’s like Christmas!
Wow impressive
I’m new to growing, and purchased a Colocasia Black Magic for my landscape. After moving to the area to be planted in ground, they began to develop brown spots. I’m so bummed. Any suggestions? I’m local, in Beaumont, TX.
Are they brown spots all over on each leaf? If so, that’s most likely rust & you should spray a Copper Fungicide to get rid of it. If it’s just browning/yellowing of some leaves just chop those off & it’ll regrow new ones.
Great information, thank you 👏🇬🇧
Great video, gorgeous plants!
@@planttodaywithamyrae thank you!!
Yes they prefer partial shade!
Really great informative video ! Easy to listen to !:)
😊 thank you!
I’m in Pearland looking forward to growing some. Checking out Lowe’s tomorrow.
Very nice very good information . From Tamil Nadu South India .
Loved your video ❤️
Thanks!
Yes absolutely, that would be fun to watch! I’m curious, where do you live that they don’t offer colocasia?
@@planttodaywithamyrae yeah, you're right. I looked it up, variegated shell ginger, they're absolutely Jurassic, never heard of them before but I love them now. Unfortunately I googled them and they don't appear to be available here either, *sigh*. Yes, you must visit Israel, bring plants! lol. happy gardening, looking forward to poking around your channel some more and seeing what your growing!
Hello. I have a colocasia in a pot and I noticed it’s roots coming out the bottom.. I really want to put in the ground but I’m too scared to.. will it survive In the ground? It gets part sun and I’m in Belton Texas.
Thank you
Yes absolutely, it will love it but definitely put it in a spot you’re okay with it spreading or you could share the babies :)
Great video! Nice 👍🏻 collection!
Hello !! Can u please tell me which one has the highest foliage yield per month or year ? And how much ( in weight ) would it be per hectare ??
I’m sorry, I don’t know the answer for that.
Do you now where I can get these exoyic elephant ears. I cannot find the Black ones anywhere
@@creolelady182 honestly, I’ve just gotten lucky finding them at local nurseries or even big box stores. Home Depot recently had black ones in gallon pots!
Damn so beautiful 🤩 nice plants too😅
I have elephant ears and I don't know the exact name for them but I get minds to grow about o9 to 10 feet tall. Wish I could show them to you. Hopefully I can find a way to show you
😃thanks
Imma call you the elephant ear queen. I have purchase my first alocasia colo..whatever you said 😂and yours are soooo beautiful. Have you did a care video for them?
Thank you!!! I haven’t done a care video, because honestly I don’t do anything to them except cut off the spent leaves!!!
Hi could you please tell me what type of soil you have? Thanks.
It’s a sandy/clay mix. Typical suburban Houston soil 😃
is that variegated jewel weed (aka touch me not) to the left?
That’s a green colored copper plant :)
Do you have a video of all of your backyard plants?
I kept meaning to make one before the winter but then time got away from me. This spring I will definitely do just that!
@@planttodaywithamyrae Awesome. Thank you!
How much water and feeding does the first type need?
It’s like to stay moist, it can even live in wet boggy conditions. I don’t ever feed them but it doesn’t hurt ;)
What are those other plants in there with those first Colocasia? Some sort of Stromanthea?
The pink ones are Ti plant, is that which ones you mean?
@@planttodaywithamyrae The ones with the long slender leaves all kinda coming from a central location, yesh one has some pink and almost red to it, the other is nearly same shape but mostly green? Looks like right in front of the Diamond Head Colocasia
@@codelicious6590 the green directly in front is a large variegated agave ☺️
Beautiful.
Love the video 💜 I've learned so much!!!
May I ask what the plant is at the beginning of the video when showing the diamond head with all that beautiful fuchsia pink?
Thank you!! That is a Ti plant also known as Pink Sister plant (Cordyline fruiticosa)! They are beautiful and easy to grow!
@@planttodaywithamyrae I have a cordyline in my back porch (zone 8a), but the tag said it should be brought inside in the winter. Does it survive your winters? I wish I could plant it in the ground.
@@celianewman4809 it does survive, but I’m in 9a so a bit warmer. Although the big freeze we had killed it, last month it came back from the roots! Little shoots popped up all around it.
Which ones have the edible tubers?
Hey Amy I have 1 large Colocasia growing in my small yard and it flowered! (4 flowers so far) The flowers are still new ish but I was wondering if any of yours ever flowered and if you`ve gotten seeds from them. ?
Wow 4 is a lot! Yes mine also flower but I’ve never “assisted” them to pollinate & so no I haven’t gotten seeds. From what I read, they don’t pollinate very often and they need a little bit of assistance.
I live in zone 7, so I will have to dig them up in fall.
the ones in the back are actually xanthasoma saggitifolium
How were you able to grow your elephant ear so big so quickly? You must have very rich soil?
Not really! The variety makes a big difference. The largest ones are Jack’s giant variety I believe and so they grow big quickly.
So the collocation variety can handle full sun?? 😃
@@jacelandadventures1523 Not all colocasia are full sun, many of them prefer a more part Sun location in the hottest part of the day. It’s a bit of trial and error depending on your location.
Nice video ☺
Question: How deep do you plant the colocasia/alocasias? And do you cover them in winters with berch or mulch?
I plant the bulb up to the neck. The bulb naturally starts to rise up after a year or so, it just kind of does what it wants. I do try to mulch heavily in winter but they all came back after we had a few days of 20 degree weather.
@@planttodaywithamyrae Thak you ☺ Do you remove the berch.mulch after winter or just leave it as topping for soil?
@@parttimeninja5521 I do pull it back away from the neck of the bulb if it died completely back
Beautiful
