I’m from Nottingham and went on a trip to Birmingham about 8 years ago. Ended up in Tipton to get a feel for areas in the Black Country. Me and my brother went into a pub that was within a housing estate and felt like complete and utter foreigners. The pub was a total shit tip. Selling cans of lager from behind the bar, didn’t understand anything anyone was saying, there was a parrot squarking in a cage, and got stared at so much. Strange place. Think it was the wagon and horses from looking on maps.

You’re right about Avon, it is literally simply a derived word for river. In this case the Welsh for river ‘afon’ that then became Avon. I live in north Wiltshire near the Avon River and it is a common pub quiz question as much like the scientific term for the western Gorilla, it’s called the same thing twice.....Gorilla Gorilla- River River (Avon River).

The Romans assumed the English word for river was Avon and when they marched to other places they called those rivers Avon too and it stuck.
