I’m from Nottingham and went on a trip to Birmingham about 8 years ago. Ended up in Tipton to get a feel for areas in the Black Country. Selling cans of lager from behind the bar, didn’t understand anything anyone was saying, there was a parrot squarking in a cage, and got stared at so much. Strange place. Wow, what a head full of knowledge! Avon is an old word for river, it's from the Welsh 'Afon', which means river (pronounced 'ah-von' in English, or close enough.) It's still in use today, but being Welsh it's probably been around in one form or another for at least a couple of thousand years and maybe more. Very impressive all round!
You’re right about Avon, it is literally simply a derived word for river. In this case the Welsh for river ‘afon’ that then became Avon. According to a bus tour I took years ago when the Romans came over and went to Bath the pointed at the River to ask what it was called the locals said Avon (the name they called the River).
