    Man, I sat here for two solid hours tonight trying to figure out how on earth you export as a tiff on mac version. In another tutorial a guy went to file/save as top left. This was not on the mac. I'm new enough to deep sky stacking but wow, this simple thing really had me stumped. Thanks to you I see how it's done, I had clicked that down arrow but didn't think thet drop down at the bottom was where you select. Thanks!

I also use GIMP 2.10 however, my tool selection on left side is much smaller and this version just seems to have more options available around the general screen area... does your computer have anything to do with these tools bars? Thanks for another fine tutorial Nico - really interested to see how Siril compares to DSS - certainly looks easier to use with the scripts, but appreciate there is still a lot of options you've yet to explore. Assume you rate it sufficiently to still consider it for a future video tutorial / stacker of choice ?

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  4 роки тому +6

      Hi Ian,
      I will probably keep producing video series in this branching approach to show people different options. If I had more time, I would add even more (AstroPixelProcessor, StarTools, etc.). I think Siril is just as easy to use as DSS, faster than most of the competition, and has additional features that make it the better option. For example, PhotometricColorCalibration works well for getting to an accurate starting color balance. With the new UI, I predict it will explode in popularity soon. For my personal projects (not UA-cam), I mostly use PixInsight and Photoshop partly because I have put in many hours with those programs so can work efficiently in them.
      Clear skies, Nico

    Thank you for the great tutorial. Two questions. Was this from the modified 60d? Also, was there a reason for not using SiriL's auto histogram function? It does a pretty fast job of auto stretching as a starting point in PS or GIMP.

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, this was from the modified 60D. No reason to not stretch in SiriL; I usually find auto-stretches a bit too aggressive with a strong possibility of clipping star color.

    What are your thoughts on Starry Sky Stacker (SSS)? I notice a lot of us are mac users and many people seem to use Starry Landscape Stacker, but your videos have largely used DSS instead, despite being a mac user.
    This month I've been using both SSS and DSS, and SSS seems to be wayyyyyy worse than DSS after stacking ~200 images of Andromeda. SSS almost seems to stack a worse image than any of my individual images, but I feel like I've been following the instructions..

      Hi Fred,
      Not sure, but feel free to send my the file, and the camera/lens you used and I can take a look: nicocarver at gmail dot com.
      You can also try the normal color calibration, where it doesn't need to plate solve. Just click on the red channel, and draw a small box over a dark nebula for the "black reference" and then draw a box over a blown out star core and use that as the "white reference". It will then color balance the image using those two previews as the black point and white point.

      @Abaunzamarco 4 роки тому

      Hi there, just wanted to give my two cents on this. I had some issues with the plate solving also, although I feel this version improved on this. The work around for me was to play with different shapes and sizes on the crop and try again the photometric calibration until it worked. One additional comment is that if you have problems finding the pixel size for your camera you can click the get Metadata from Image to fill those automatically. Greetings from Mexico City!

    In your final analysis of the image, you say it's too red in the lower left and too green in the centre but to my eyes, it looks fantastic and I wouldn't know how those 2 areas should appear. To what would I reference to know the 'correct' appearance of any area of the sky? Is it just a matter of more experience (on your part) knowing how these areas appear in other photos?

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  4 роки тому

      It's a tricky thing, and yes you can train your eye to see these issues by looking at lots of astrophotography and putting your work out there for critique (local astronomy clubs, astrobin, etc.). When I was noticing the green and magenta color casts at the end, I was noticing them in the dark parts of the image. Typically your sky background or dark dust lanes should be a fairly neutral dark gray/black and not take on any one color too strongly. It's a bit hard to see them in this image since the milky way is nearly filling the frame.
