Game changer, THANK YOU! I spent days clearing snow off my west-facing deck in order to make one more attempt at capturing Andromeda Galaxy at new moon, before it passed below the horizon for the season. Having grown maybe a little overconfident in my backyard Bortle 4 skies, I underestimated the impact of more "local" light pollution, i.e. neighbor's driveway. I've been watching your DLSR tutorials and climbing the GIMP learning curve since starting out in AP last summer, but I was at a complete loss as to whether I could in any way salvage those 2 hours of my first perfectly framed, albeit light bombed images of the galaxy. Through trial and error, I wound up combining the Layer Mask technique demonstrated here with the Gradient Tool technique from one of your Orion tutorials. Some quick color-tuning to the Hubble Palette and I have a final image I could even consider framing - until next season. 😉 You are a gifted artist and a gifted communicator.

SiriL provides a pretty nifty way to stretch the image. Under the Image Processing, choose Histogram Transformation. Then, at the bottom of the histogram, there's an icon that looks like an S curve with a white gear/explosion/cloud. It's the last icon on the right. Click that and your image is auto-stretched. Just in case you don't want to do all that level adjustment in Photoshop/Gimp/etc.

A key takeaway from the video was seeing a error with Siril . I've seen programming tutorials which show exactly how things work, making it seem easy. So when you see a simple error with the resolution it helps to understand the application being shown. Great teaching moment!

Finally, a place where MacOs people go for astrophotography. Please consider showing the preprocessing of planetary images with Siril - it seems like it has the capability (similar to registax) but it is not as intuitive as preprocessing deep sky objects. Also seems like the beta version is buggy for planetary preprocessing but the official version works better. In any case you have great content! thank you!!
Unfortunately, I don't know much about planetary, maybe sometime I will try again. Have you tried Lynkeos? lynkeos.sourceforge.io/ not sure if it works on modern macs...
@@NebulaPhotos yes, lynkeos is the only other planetary stacking program available free on the Mac. It has seen several updates in recent years. It works on Catalina for sure and also now with 4K video files. I like the idea of Siril because it can be a free one stop shop for preprocessing all our astrophotography.
Yet another excellent video. I have Siril but I’m going to use Affinity for post processing and see how that goes being a Mac devotee.

Wow, Siril looks great for somebody like me who likes post-processing but hates the color balance process because it's so finicky sometimes in Photoshop. I'll definitely have to give it a shot.

I've had mine come out orange tonight. did all the steps you did in the video and it was kinda ok-ish but strangly very orange. Like the flats I made (was also orangelike).
Did you try color calibration in Siril? still orange after that?
Thanks for this video! I have a question in relation to the color calibration that I was hoping you could help shed some light on. Like you mentioned, doing it manually usually works better than the photometric option for me but for some reason it usually leaves many of the brighter stars with a blue hue to them that really gets exaggerated with stretching/saturation. Is this normal? If so is there any way to avoid it? I use an 80mm f/6 stellarvue with a Sony NEX-5N if that helps. Tracking and focus are perfect. Perhaps there’s a way to mask the stars in GIMP or PS and correct the color separately?
I’m not sure if you covered this or if it’s just like this for macs, but to use starnet (on Windows) you just drag the tiff file and drop it over the starnet program and it will run. I think the tiff file has to be in the starnet folder though. So there is no need to use a command prompt. At least not on a Windows pc.

1 sec each so about 1000s total. This was don't just with a tripod. See part 1 for more detail
Hi Nico, thank you for a great video. In the Spring I missed Orion since it was already too low. Then in the summer I had no luck with the weather (and it gets dark so late!). Now I saw your video on Andromeda (with siril and gimp) and gave it another go. The result is not perfect, but enough to keep me going. I realized how important a precise focusing really is! One question: what woud have been your exposure time if you had used a tracking mount? What the ISO? Cheers, Rafael

Which final photo would be considered better: The photo here or in the 2a video (DSS and Gimp)? Are the differences solely due to decisions in gimp or do siril and dss contribute to the overall quality of the finished photos?
Probably best not to make comparisons between my final products of these videos. I am not being careful to try to replicate a similar workflow, just give a sense of the steps in each program. If I was being more careful, I could make each end result look more similar. However, I do have to give a slight edge to Siril and PixInsight over just DSS, not for their stacking abilities, but for having things like: background extraction, color calibration, and astro-specific noise reduction.
I use folders on my camera in the menu settings to separate my calibration files from each other and the light frames. It makes it easier for me to label them when uploading them to my computer. I rename the folder after downloading them to identify them. Do you use folders on your camera?

I had a siril couple of questions, I like it thats the only one I use now, I noticed on the beta version there is no script to do only lights, lights, darks no flat, etc are those scrips available somewhere? also I usually do a histogram stretch before bringing into PS, does that matter?

Yep, this page (free-astro.org/index.php?title=Siril:scripts) describes getting other scripts, and the "OSC_Preprocessing_WithoutDBF.ssf" script sounds like the one you are looking for. It's at the bottom of the page. Perfectly fine to do the histogram stretch in Siril before bringing into PS!

Hope youll see this, but i am running on a m1 Mac on big sur for starnet++. Not only can I not find the link in sourceforge for it, but when I downloaded it off the official site, there was so run_rgb file. Lastly, when i put it in terminal, it said access denied. Is there any workaround?
Hi Nico. Great videos. Im relatively new to astrophotography and recently stumbled upon a problem with DSS. Its taking wayyyy too long to register and stack. For 1000x2sec lights im looking at 30-36hours. Im working on a laptop (i3, 8gb RAM and 1tb HDD) i kmow not great. Is that the kind of time i can expect from any stacking programme with my computer power? Is a more powerful laptop/desktop required? Thanks!
Can I combine light frames with different exposures in Siril?

Hi from Germany. Why not going the way color adjustment -> highlights in order to protect the stars? Or is it not available in Gimp? By the way, best teacher for astro image processing.
I think that is available in GIMP, I will try to remember to give it a try next time. I like to experiment, so I welcome tips like this one! Thanks!

@@majortom4338 Ah, got you, GIMP's select by color tool doesn't have the "highlights" option like PS, but I do agree that would a pretty good way to select the stars (just use a quick mask to unselect the galaxy core) in Photoshop. I still find I get results I like better with StarNet processing, but there are many workflows that can work for this stuff.

I'd say they are equally complex and competent for astrophotography processing. However, they are just different enough in some small details that it can be frustrating to learn one and then try to do the same thing in the other. I do find that Siril is a big improvement over DSS for preprocessing if you do the color calibration and background extraction it helps a lot later on and makes processing simpler.

Yes, I'd say the main difference here is that by using Siril I was able to do Color Calibration/ Background Extraction which allowed me to do LESS futzing with those in GIMP, and that helped with the core color/detail. The other thing I will say is I am not at ALL a consistent processor. This means I could use the same data, same software and every time I process the photo, it will look different. That is all just to say: my goal with showing the different software workflows is NOT to say one is better than another, but to show some of the capabilities and techniques one can use with each. I am very impressed that free open-source ones are in most ways just as capable as paid software. I'd say my favorite for being a complete package with lots of unique tools for astrophotography is PixInsight, but it's also the least user-friendly and has a pretty hefty up-front cost.

Would you know why Siril would fail with a 'Sequence processing failed' error? I stepped through your youtube above and also did the same for DSS that you have - DSS worked fine and I edited in GIMP, so can't figure why the same files failed in Siril
Hmm, I'm not sure Gerry. If you have a way of looking through the photos and finding any off target or with streaked stars, and removing them before stacking, this may help. If you still can't figure it out, feel free to email me (nicocarver at gmail dot com) or submit the issue to the Siril developers (they will ask for your logs).
Turned out to be self inflicted. Having used DSS previously I forgot my Lights folder still had the Autosave file in it which Siril was trying to stack. Check your data! 🙄

Hey there; I see you're using GIMP instead of SiriL's built-in tools for stretching--is there a specific reason that you don't use the SiriL toolchain?
Furthermore, have you tried Roger Clark's rnc-color-stretch program?

@@NebulaPhotos Thanks a ton for the video; I'm using it as a direct reference for how terrible my current integrations are. I have a feeling that the step up from my current 200mm f4 to a 200mm f2.8 might make it easier in terms of computational time, but I'm going to convert these 8,000 subs today and get stacking. Just switched to a Pentax K30 DSLR with GPS Addon on top. Pentax includes a Astrotracer function especially for astrophotography with "tracking" and no need to polar align. Hopefully it works. I sold all of my other astrophotography stuff, eq mount, scope. Never got it run without hours of preparation. Results were bad and stressful to post process. Now I decided to check a quick easy solution thus I will give Pentax a try. Br from Germany
I don't know why but starnet is not working for me. It works fine with the test tifs they included. What options do you choose in the export window? (Compression, exit data, colour profile, etc.)
If it works fine with the test tifs, and you don't want to mess around with the config file in a text editor, you can simply move the test tiff out of the folder, move YOUR file in and rename YOUR file to have the same name as the test tif. If it still doesn't work, make sure your test tif is 16 bit and flattened (no alpha channel)

Thanks Nico for another excellent series of videos: so helpful to see the various alternatives for stacking and processing. I've been trying Siril as it looks so easy to use whilst also being powerful, but I've been having a lot of issues with the stacking / registration process failing towards the end of the sequence, due to apparent lack of memory - which I think refers to disk capacity rather than RAM. As my Win10 system has 32GB RAM and almost 1 TB of storage capacity, this is puzzling, no matter what. I notice you are MacOS based, so perhaps this is Windows specific: hopefully not just with my own system!
Almost all my DSO system has now arrived so hope to be generating my own images rather than having to download yours to play with (so helpful you providing that - many thanks, again)
I have also run into some stacking problems with Siril, but it's hard to show problems in a video since they can be so specific to particular hardware and not universal. I think in the end, I only stacked about 500 of my 1000 shots to make this. Are you using the beta or the last stable release? Very cool on your DSO system getting in, looking forward to seeing your photos!
@@NebulaPhotos Beta: 0.99.4 commit 19fa980 which i think is identical to the one you show here. longer term I have a PC build project including a decent capacity RAID1 NAS, but in the meantime I hope the dev team are able to address: semi relieved it's not just me, but wish neither of us had issues :-)
Counting the days now, which will no doubt coincide with weeks of cloud as Winter approaches here at 57.6N.....
But the nice thing about being that far North is when you do have clear skies in the winter, you have VERY long nights to image!!
Love these vids! quick question, would you consider sirils automatic histogram stretch to be better than what you could do in photoshop? if you think photoshop would be better, should you use sirils autostretch and then go further in photoshop or just do everything in photoshop?
It's probably just as good, or you can also stretch manually in Siril. I don't think one method is necessarily better than the other. I'm just used to to doing it one way, but should really mix it up and try other ways.

Try adding "sudo" (no quotes, all lowercase) before the terminal command, and see if it asks for a password.
Hi Nico. I’m trying hard to get some good images, following your tips. Thanks. But I am not having a good result, my images seem to be very noisy, scatched.
I don’t know if the problem is how I am taking them or the processing itself.
I know my equipments are not the best ones, but I still think the problem is me. I’m using a 86mm f4.2 setup to take domes until my f1.8 arrives (will take a while).
For example, I took a good shot of the. Sculptor constaletion, got the sculptor galaxy and another star cluster nearby, it was a bortle 4 site, clean sky but super moon that night.
The picture is ok, but everytime I try to clean to look just as yours, the details vanishes or I get a very noisy image.
I don’t know what to do anymore. Any tips ??? Thanks
What is the total integration time? Sculpter galaxy is a lot dimmer than Andromeda, so to bring it out above the noise will take lots more time. If you are having trouble, I'd suggest going after bright Messier objects. Also are you talking about 86mm focal length or a telescope with 86mm aperture?
@@NebulaPhotos I can’t tell the integration time exactly, about 3 h for some. But it also depends on the computer. I always take at least 300 lights. Even those photos with no specific foreground I can’t clean and put a beautiful black space. I’m using 86mm focal length, a Nikon 55-200 zoom lens, and on this DF I have f/4.2.
I bought a 85mm f1.8, but it will take a while to arrive.
@@aprendendo.astronomia Ah, okay, the sculptor galaxy is tiny for an 85mm lens to capture. I'd really suggest sticking with Messier objects for now. The best for untracked astro are M31, M45, M42, M8, M20. With those objects the processing should be easier because you don't have to stretch as much to bring them out

Did the process within Siril without any problems, but when I open the tiff result file in Gimp (Windows version) I'm getting this message from Gimp : Import image from a color profile want to convert or keep option ? Rendering intent is setting to Relative colorimetric. Not sure what to do ? Thanks for your helping hand. Best, Jean-François

@@NebulaPhotos Hi Nebula, When I'am processing the photos (Script in Siril), I'm getting this message in the console : The Bayer pattern found in the header (GBRG) is different from the Bayer pattern saved in the parameters (RGGB). Override the settings. The process goes on with no interuption.
Do I have to set something in the parameters ?

Plzz take a challenge an do a video on max achievement with a astromaster 130eq on galaxy and nebula. Let use beginner have some hope expensive stuffs can do expensive stuff..But No one buy a Ferrari the first go until they are damn rich... So talk about 130eq known beginner Telescope...from India Kolkata with love and hunger for knowledge for beyond...

I had to stop the Siril process because it was eating 600 gb of space and I just ran out hard drive (960 lights, 120 for each darks, flats and biases 32 gb total) I guess I'll try to remove at least half of those files. I don't how you'd manage to get away with 990 lights (lots of available space?) or I just did something wrong.
Hi Luis, Yes, I should have mentioned it does require lots of temporary space to stack. Sorry! I use Western Digital 4TB external drives that I get more of whenever they are on sale for under $100.
@@NebulaPhotos NP, I just lowered the files I was using to 700 lights and only 70 of each calibration frames and it "only" used 480 gb, lol. Any way, thanks for the reply and thanks again for doing this awesome tutorials. I went from knowing nothing in astrophotography to successfully capture m42 in the middle of a bortle9 city on new year eve with good results on my first attempt.

uhhmm siril gives me the result: Script execution failed. what do I do?
Anything more specific? A common reason for failure is if the folders aren't names exactly like this (all lowercase): biases, darks, lights, flats
@@NebulaPhotos hmm. siril thinks there isn't enough storage on my device, even though I have more than enough. odd. i can only stack 75 images before I "run out of storage".
@@polyblank73 ah, I see. Yes, it does use a lot of temporary storage to stack (true of all the programs). If you have an external hard drive with more room, you can work off of that in Siril.

@@polyblank73 Step 1. Put your folders of data on the external hard drive in a single folder (i.e. M31->flats). Then click the blue 'Home' button in the upper left of Siril and choose the M31 folder on the external hard drive. Step 2. Go to Preferences->Miscellaneous, set the Swap storage to the external hard drive.
This image looks worse than the main video that used deepskystacker, it looks a lot noisier.
Is this the fault of Siril as opposed to deepskystacker? Should I use deepskystacker if possible? Or is the difference Photoshop VS Gimp?

I am way more familiar with photoshop over gimp, so it’s just me, not the fault of any one program. Siril is great, I recommend it.

By the way, you don’t need to put Siril into 16bit mode before you save. The save dialog itself asks you bitdepth.
At 25:30. Slow down and tell us what you are doing step by step rather than say Mm m mm. That's the stuff we need to know.
