    Hey Dimitri. Any thoughts on Georgia Tech's Quantitative and Computational Finance masters? I'm already an undergraduate at GT in CS, and I'm thinking about going into quant finance. Georgia Tech allows undergraduates to start taking MS in CS classes their junior year, and several of the classes for that can be double-counted for the QCF masters. Theoretically, I could graduate with two masters degrees for roughly the price of one in less than two extra years (being in state helps with that). GT is consistently in the top 15 on QuantNet, but doesn't seem to get much press, which makes me nervous. GT is probably the only quant masters program that I'd consider. If I don't end up doing that, I'll probably just end up doing a CS PhD somewhere else. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

    Could you do this for Europe? For example, I think there are several QFin master's in Spain and I'm not quite sure if they are worth it. They look very expensive and not that rigorous... Personally, I am doing my master's at WU in Vienna, Austria and I have to say that it is, overall, the best bang-for-buck QFin master's you can get because higher education is public in Austria and, therefore, quite cheap for foreigners (I pay 1500 euros in tuition each year; 3000 in total). The faculty has well-known names in the community, research output is high and you can choose between a Science and an Industry track. They have several collaborations with local banks, insurance companies and investment funds.

      @@m.k.3197 Never said they have industry staff. In the industry track, which is probably what you meant, you get assigned to do a project for a company and that gives you a fair amount of credits and decreases your workload on the thesis a little bit. In the science track you visit research seminars, read and write papers and have more focus on your thesis.

    Hey Dimitri, thank you for your content. Are quants in contact with definition, theorem proof style Mathematics, for example reading reasearch or do they only use applied mathematics? How interesting is this job from a mathematical perspective? Or in other words is the math like in the Shreve book? Or is that only the case in academic jobs?

    • @DimitriBianco
      @DimitriBianco  Рік тому

      It varies a lot from firm to firm but typically we are not doing proofs. Some areas like financial engineering (derivatives sell side) will be more math heavy. Firms are all designed to make a profit so every project needs to have some applied potential. Even though I don't do a lot of math per se, those who understand the definitions and proofs end up building better models. When you build a model you have to make decisions and ask the right questions. Those who lack a rigorous background always seem surprised on how a few people seem to make far better models. Explaining every decision is tiring and most don't understand how something like an understanding of math conditions impact which model was chosen.

      Nope. I do not deviate much out of the US because the job markets abroad are very different. For example, I can't compare salary and job responsibilities of US graduates against South African graduates as it wouldn't be fair. The US has much high salaries and a lot more jobs in quant finance. Academically I could compare them however I also utilize an industry perspective as to how the skills fit into the US job market. There are really a lot of challenges in comparing programs outside of a specific country especially those that are not global finance hubs.
