Port of Montréal | Montréal Fire Service (SIM) Recovers Body of Capsized Kayaker in Rescue Operation

SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 2019 - At approximately 14:15 hours, the Canadian Coast Guard advised the SPVM (Service de police de la Ville de Montréal) and the SIM (Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal) of an incident involving a 56-year-old male kayaker in distress on the Saint-Lawrence River, just south of the Jacques Cartier Bridge and adjacent to the Molson Canada Brewery. The man had been on an excursion with five other kayakers, all of whom were wearing life jackets and appropriate clothes to keep themselves warm on the relatively mild winter afternoon. It seems as if the man's kayak accidentally got caught in a strong current and capsized, throwing the man upside down into the water. From that point on, he was last seen drifting several hundred metres downstream. Firefighters from Station 20 responded to the Port of Montréal's docks while specialized firefighters from Station 15 deployed their Nautical Rescue boat to begin searching for the kayaker, however they were too late to save his life. His body was eventually found trapped between the hull of a bulk freighter by the name of CSL Laurentien and the Port's dock. Heavy Rescue teams from Stations 13 and 47 were then called in to perform a technical "rescue" to recover the body from its precarious position. At 15:45 hours, firefighters transmitted a 10-10, signalling an end to the intervention.
SAMEDI LE 5 JANVIER 2019 - Vers 14h15, la Garde côtière canadienne a informé le SPVM (Service de police de la Ville de Montréal) et le SIM (Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal) d'un incident impliquant un kayakiste de 56 ans en détresse sur le fleuve Saint-Laurent, juste au sud du pont Jacques-Cartier et à proximité de la brasserie Molson Canada. L’homme était en excursion avec cinq autres kayakistes qui portaient tous des vestes de sauvetage et des vêtements appropriés pour se tenir au chaud sur l'après-midi d’hiver relativement doux. Il semble que le kayak de l'homme se soit accidentellement pris dans un fort courant et ait chaviré, jetant l'homme à l'envers dans l'eau. À partir de ce moment-là, il a été aperçu pour la dernière fois à plusieurs centaines de mètres en aval. Les pompiers de la caserne 20 ont répondu aux quais du Port de Montréal tandis que les pompiers spécialisés de la caserne 15 ont déployé leur bateau de sauvetage nautique pour commencer à chercher pour le kayakiste, mais ils étaient trop tard pour sauver sa vie. Son corps a finalement été retrouvé coincé entre la coque d'un vraquier, nommé CSL Laurentien, et le quai du Port. Les équipes de sauvetage technique des stations 13 et 47 ont ensuite été appelées pour effectuer un "sauvetage" assez compliqué afin de récupérer le corps de sa position précaire. À 15h45, les pompiers ont transmis le 10-10, signalant la fin de l'intervention.

Where is the port? At north or south of jacques cartier bridge?

It extends south and north of the Jacques Cartier bridge, but the rescue operation took place to the south of the bridge. The exact location is described in the description.
