I love everything about this video, the music, animation, the line deliveries of "sainte" and "grunch", swear to God this channel is perfect in every way.
Here’s my pothead analysis: the man is suffering from seasonal depression and then is visited by an angel who will grant 1 of 2 wishes: appeal to yourself (grunch) or appeal to others (sainte)? There's no wrong choice because ultimately the man is choosing how he will be happy. Will he get happiness from himself or from the people around him? The man chose to be a Grinch because he desires happiness from within. And when he becomes a Grinch he unlocks the shackles within him that locked away his true-self. He put those shackles there in the first place because he was convinced he needed to conceal his personality. But after the transformation he can't help but wonder: "have I truly become a monster?". The new perspective granted to him by his wish allowed him to see that he is in fact not the monster he feared he'd become. He is just himself. So then he goes into public and dances his heart out as a grand gesture of confidence and self-love. Side note: Watch this vid at 0.75x speed it actually sounds awesome
Its a mix of the song and the odd movements that gives a sense of nostalgia. It reminds us of dreams because dreams are weird and indescribable like the music and the movement
5 years ago my buddy had all our friends over and he showed us this video, those were some of the best times of my life. I still listen to the ost of this and it’s just as short as those moments seem now, this is the most nostalgic song I’ve ever heard in my life thank you pilot red sun
This guy didn't "turn" into a Grinch, he already "was" a Grinch, it's just that as soon as Santa put the idea into his head that people like him are like the Grinch, he started to see himself as one.
The video shows that there are never genuinely two choices. Like with many times in our own lives, the protagonist is presented a false binary, and the claus, a false prophet, suggests to him that he could only be a sainte, or a grunch. Having the role of the grinch forced upon him he does not accept it as it is and instead pursues his own path, one of dance, of entertainment. He is human, and therefore radically free, capable of making any decision at any time. That is the moral I take from this, and it is one that is truly meaningful to me.
However, he was given the option of choosing between sainte and grunch. If the protagonist’s intentions were truly benevolent, why would he choose grunch over sainte in the first place?
There’s also a theme of self loathing in that he breaks his own tv and questions if being grunch is really that bad. He attempts to prove it wrong with a harmless activity by dancing but he only delves further into his self loathing by continuing to let others decide his worth since the townsfolk judge him harshly when he leaves the house and dances. But he’s also taken a step away from the self loathing by embraceing his true self and dancing anyway.
The choice of being a sainte or a grunch is merely an illusion cast by the fact that people sometimes only see two different sides with no in-between. As if hot and cold exists but warm does not. This is why he asks himself "have I truly become a monster?" when in reality not all of his actions define him as a grunch. The way he thinks and the choices he made make him a mix of both a sainte and a grunch which is unique to him as a result of his actions and experiences. This leaves him in a state of denial, which takes him to the plaza to dance, trying to find where he fits in society. Trying to find others like him that share the same flaws, ideas, or commonalities. Not perfect like a sainte, and not evil like a grunch, he writes his own story through the choices he makes.
The whole video idea goes hard for no reason. A grumpy man who has the power to change who he is or unlock the personification of his true self. Instead of hiding in fear and misery, he goes out and shows off his true self, disgusting everyone but finding true happiness.
Dancing in public after being transformed into a monster, now that’s a statement which screams : “ Judge me as much as you like people, but you may not have the final claim over the fat of my soul” true artist…
I think that what people are missing here is that this story is about more than choosing the wrong option. I think that Grinch’s immediate transformation and later questioning of his “choice” shows that he never really made a choice at all. He was just an inherently sour person, and society, as represented by Claus, labeled him as such and put the idea in his head that if he’s not an acceptable saint, then he is just a Grinch. A monster. However, Grinch defies this idea soon after the choice is made for him. He asks himself if he is truly a monster, and even goes out and expresses himself in a harmless way in an attempt to show people that while he is no saint, The Grinch is not truly a monster either. The sad part is that despite these efforts to prove his ideas of self-identity, society still labels him as the Christmas Cretin, ending our story on an unfortunate note. Revision: Grinch’s Ultimatum is the prequel to Shrek
Being a Grinch might seem like the “bad” one out of the two choices. We mustn’t forget that afterall, the Grinch’s heart grew three sizes after truly accepting himself. To be a saint is to be a perfect yet artificial being, a pure person, however, becoming one is a completely inhuman task, for nobody is perfect. The Grinch is a truly pure person unlike a saint, for The Grinch has had to deal with inner demons, managing to go past his self-loathing ways and accepting others and most importantly, himself, and in the process, became much more than just a “Grinch”.
When the grunch asks "have I truly become a monster?" It would seem at first that he is starting to realize that he is a monster. However, I would venture to say that he is starting to realize that he is *not* a monster. Clause said to "choose wisely" and the wise choice would seem at first to be sainte, but maybe choosing grunch does NOT make you a monster. Perhaps choosing sainte would have freed the man from his demons, but instead he chooses grunch and channels his frustration and passion into writing and dancing. The question "have I truly become a monster?" Lets us into the mind of a proud grunch; a grunch who questions the validity of his "inherit" bad nature; a grunch who dares to challenge the ultamatim given to him by a strange, detatched, unmerciful, being. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
It’s not the video that’s been since the dawn of time, it’s the question itself. Are we to hide our true nature to become an angle to satisfy those who see us as monsters, or are we to become comfortable with ourselves, and accept our flaws that others may not see as acceptable. The movement of the man shows his comfort in his dance, how he does not desire to be changed. It’s truly, a tantalizing conundrum.

This is art. The whole video is a unique vibe. When grunch danced to that idm with flute i was like "damn straight. You do your thing. Life is fleeting."

i cant explain how this somehow immaculately captures the feeling of christmas. its like... some weird period of the year where both morale (sheer happiness due to the holidays) and the environment (snow/cold) change, making things feel a little ethereal n stuff and this video perfectly captures that ethereal vibe. the song is just such a banger too in some weird way. genuinely one of my favorite videos on the internet
The song is really weird honestly but oddly fitting. It sounds like a song in a late 90s game on a china town level that you always hated but it's a banger

Alright buddy, you have two options here. You can be a saint, or you can be a grinch. Those are your two choices. Choose wisely. So what's it gonna be, huh, HUH?? A saint (SAINTE) or a grinch (GRUNCH)?
The question is rhetorical, as it’s apparent before Claus even comes down the chimney that the man has always been a Grunch, and only upon hallucinating Santa gave him the choice, realizes his transformation. His attempts to go out and convince the community -who is already numb to his presence - that he isn’t a monster, fall flat, and we’re forced to look into ourselves and see if we’ve already made the choice between grunch and sainte ourselves.
I’m in my last month of my arts bachelors and I have to say, these videos are some of the best displays of art I’ve ever seen. I’m not actually trolling. They are sheer proof that the quality of work in an animation can be as rough as possible, but still as a piece be so perfect. Great story telling in such an insanely unique way. Don’t change dude!
I love the fact that this animation is 7 years old, yet sparks such deep philosophical feelings 6 years, 2 years, and even just 8 months ago. I just come back for the music, personally, and I can’t recall just why I have this music (image?) mixed with SM64
Reminds me of the original Shin Megami Tensei; the protagonist's dog, Pascal, has a dedicated room and melancholic theme, but with only the description "Pascal the dog is here."
This video it's pure nostalgia for me. I trully love it. When TV stops to work because of bad weather, man starts to break it. Santa enters his home and giving him a chose: to be a sainte, or a grunch. Man understand that he isn't saint (because of anger and bad behaviour I think) and choses to be grinch. Claus don't giving presents to him because he's an adult. Santa wants to save him from himself. He has magic powers and can help to understand man who him is at the Xmas eve. He morphs into monster. It is could mean end for him, or for a GRÜNCH. But he hasn't lost his humanity. He grabs stereo and goes to the Park Plaza and starts dancing. He has got rejected by society, but he found real happiness in loneless. He celebrate Christmas alone. The best melancholia, philosophy and nostalgia in two minute animation 10/10. Choose wisely...

I've lost count how many times I have watched. This is the highest art humanity has created. The indescribable emotions it makes me feel are truly unique.
Why are we all. Lemme tell you why : 1st: the music 2nd: the funny animation And 3rd : the fact that the music creates a nostalgic effect makes us re-watch it to feel the sensation again
I think PilotRedSun does an excellent job of posing an interesting philosophical question to us. We are quick to categorize people into saintes and grunches, and while this is a quick method of organizing people in to tidy groups of who conforms to our worldview and who doesn’t, we ultimately do ourselves and those we judge a disservice. We never learn about the complexity of a person. In turn, they become the thing society has told them to become. We see this when the grunch in the story questions if he has truly become a monster. However, in the end, he embraces his grunchhood, and dances amongst the rest of us, because through his embrace of his own inner darkness, he has learned that we are not simply grunch nor sainte... however we are all both grunch and sainte. Each and every one of us.
It's about how religion or maybe just society makes us label ourselves as good or evil based on our behavior, and because of this, we live our lives with the fear of being seen as different by other and thus judged as a bad person. When he decides to become full Grinch he has chosen to willingly be seen as an outcast by society, but for him this is a burden that has been lifted, as he is now able to act free and be real in a system that does not welcome spontaneity.
Here, the artist PilotRedSun presents to us a tale of morality, and whether or not it objectively exists. The unnamed man desperately attempts to get his fritzy living room television up and running. The top of the television reads "ultra high frequency box" and the barely-working television screen shows the vague figure of a man. The man on the screen is a manifestation of perfect morality, while the television itself represents the lens of absolute morality. The unnamed man wants the image to be clear, meaning that he wants to know what it means to be objectively moral. The television fails to give him a clear answer. Feeling betrayed and angry, the unnamed man attempts to destroy the taunting symbol of moral perfection. He concludes that morality will never be an easily-discernible picture by any rule of measurement, no matter how "high frequency" it is. The unnamed man is visited by Santa Clause, manifesting as God, both of whom are moral authorities in their own rights. Outraged by the unnamed man's abandonment of his moral edict, Santa offers the unnamed man a choice. He may choose to be transformed into a saint (*s a i n t e*), which is creature of pure, unrelenting moral goodness, or a grinch (*g r u n c h*), which is a creature of pure, unrelenting moral depravity. Santa leaves the unnamed man to make his decision, and the unnamed man, unable to remove himself from his divine predicament, bitterly chooses to become a grinch. Instantly his body and thoughts become flooded with hatred and poison. He takes to his journal and poses the question to himself, "Have I truly become a monster?" He takes to the streets for public consensus on the question. He dawns a leather jacket and white shirt, and styles his hair in the unmistakable manner of a juvenile delinquent, and then he dances for the bystanders. His costume represents the admittance of his new moral bankruptcy, but his dancing represents virtuous elements of the human spirit, life, grace and poetry. The whole thing is a thought-provoking piece of performance art which reiterates the question he asked himself. Has he truly become a monster? Despite his flaws, does he not have beauty inside himself as well? The people stare at him blankly. They do not know the answer his question. Soon, the Grinch himself comes to take on that same stare, as is shown in the end. His sense of self-worth and his moral status both remain uncertain.
Cold- and AH I already know what your gonna say. Jaiden, you live in Arizona , you don’t get to experience the cold... and you’re right. Other people have to shovel 3 feet of snow off their car to get to work, and all we have to do is put on a jacket, and... not turn the AC on. (This was from JaidenAnimation’s video
most people seem to think his dance is the grinch resigning himself to his fate, or a cry for help, or him trying to fight his label, but i submit an alternate interpretation: his dance is him embracing his identity, in a sort of nihilistic acceptance that if he can’t do anything to change his fate, then he won’t let it bring him down. he's asked himself the question "have i truly become a monster?" and come to the conclusion: "i am what i choose to be."
No seriously same! It genuinely, for some reason I could never possibly analyse, adds a layer of narrative, and contextualises what is on screen, even though for the most part it doesn't make sense; it doesn't have to. The only "sense" you need is to feel, and with this music, you can.
On the one hand: a choice without the ability to choose wrong - that is without stakes and impact - is no choice at all. Thus to truly exercise choice one must choose wrong intentionally. On the other hand: if we MUST choose wrong intentionally, we are in a no better position than when we started. Thus we must choose correctly, though not for the reason that it is correct. By our rebellious nature we are all condemned to be Grinch or the Grinches of Grinches :(((
A gentleman was suffering difficulty's while attempting to watch his ultra-high frequency box, in anger he destroys it, Santa Claus, concerned for the man's life, told him his actions will make him become a monster unless he changes, Claus didn't leave long before the gentleman became a grinch. He starts to question whether the actions he have commit were truly justified but comes to accept it, but a glimmer of doubt causes him to go out and dance trying to come off as a fun guy, missing what it was that made him a grinch in the first place.

John Fuklaw Jesus that's deep aye

The Grinch is a truly pure person unlike a saint, for The Grinch has had to deal with inner demons, managing to go past his self-loathing ways and accepting others and most importantly, himself, and in the process, became much more than just a “Grinch”.

inspired my ass so hard you have no idea thank you
When the grunch asks "have I truly become a monster?" It would seem at first that he is starting to realize that he is a monster.

His sense of self-worth and his moral status both remain uncertain.

most people seem to think his dance is the grinch resigning himself to his fate, or a cry for help, or him trying to fight his label, but i submit an alternate interpretation: his dance is him embracing his identity, in a sort of nihilistic acceptance that if he can’t do anything to change his fate, then he won’t let it bring him down. he's asked himself the question "have i truly become a monster?" and come to the conclusion: "i am what i choose to be."
I second this. Just because society sees him as a monster doesn't me he has to be one.
