Sundstrom sr100 with an abek filter and particulate filter infront. Made in sweeden around $250 max. It’s used by asbestos workers and hot works. I used it during the demolition of a power station where I was an oxy cutter. Worked with oil fires, grass fires, burning cable insulation, dust etc. and you can just wash the mask. Abek filter needs to be changed regularly and kept in a container when not in use as it has a carbon element that absorbs moisture.

And you can buy probably 500 n95 masks that I personally know will keep out 2 to 3 days worth of concrete dust being sprayed out of a demolition saw. But for a thousand bucks you get to look like a super villain!!

A 3M Silicone Half-Mask respirator with P-100 filters is like $40 and it's reasonably comfortable. You can also get P-100 filters with activated charcoal that block out most smells. Or for that price you can go all out and get the full mask positive pressure kit that blows filtered air into your mask
Jokes on the world, I got my 3m full face respiratory for completely free compliments of my job. They replace my filters for free every 90 days or based on accumulate in the filters and they give me a completely new mask to prevent wear and tear or UV light damage every year. Winning.

No, the concept is sound. PAPR systems like this are the best option for dealing with the worst of the worst, like chemical and biological weapons (not when designed like this, this one sucks, but they do use the same techniques) They have a blower moving the air, so clean air is always displacing contamination and doesn't use a seal at all.
