    It's amazing how you're not even a mile off the beach and you're are already catching nice size grouper. When I have to go at least 30 miles offshore to catch decent size grouper.

    Homework...homework...homework! Study local charts very carefully. Use your electronics to the fullest while always keeping an eye on sounder and chartplotter so you get a real understanding of the lay of the land. Read Florida Sport Fishing Magazine. Network with other fishermen on social networks, forums, etc. Finally, spend more time on the water. Nothing can beat time on the water. Capt Mike

    Shallow patch reefs just a few miles north of Boca Inlet off Spanish River just off the lifeguard towers in approx 30 ft. You can't miss them. Deeper reef lines in approx 60-70 ft and 90-110 ft run up and down the coast, all clearly marked on charts and relatively easy to find on sonar and chart plotter. Artificial wrecks off Boca and Pompano Beach, all on charts as well. Capt Mike

    Yes, it was a lane snapper....we had a couple baits down and I mistakenly thought that one was baited with a grunt, good eye....circle hook size varies depending on bait size, anywhere from 5/0 to 8/0 for grouper and up to 11/0 for AJs. Regarding mangroves, now is the time. Night is best with steady chum slick and current is a must. Fish are in 30 to 90 feet right now. Capt Mike

    You mentioned in the rigging section of the video that you're using knocker rigs and the weight is seen right above the hook.
    But all the fish you caught, the weights were either tied on a loop ~2 feet up or were sliding sinkers above a swivel or stopper.
    When targeting grouper and AJ's with live baits, what is the best way to rig the weights?
    Thanks, love the show and the magazine!

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  7 років тому

      We were using knocker rigs, along with fish finder rigs, etc. Its just coincidence what you end up seeing based on footage, etc. As far as live bait AJ rigs, we just did a show on that which will be airing later this summer. If you're serious about catching AJs, go with a 3-way swivel, 24" of 30 lb to the weight and 6-8 ft of 100 lb to a VMC 9/0 circle hook.

    Hi Captain Mike, just wanted to let you know that your advice was spot on. In September, My friend and I hit a reef 3 miles off of Tampa in 10 foot and limited out with 15+ inch mangroves in the first hour. We only had shrimp so, after we limited out, we caught some pinfish and other bait and found a small ledge around 4 miles offshore in 15 foot. We then proceeded to catch two keeper gag grouper a piece and release many others. Quite a colorful day in a 16 foot boat. Thank you very much for your advice. I also had a question... do you recommend the saltist 20 as a good reel that I could use for snapper and light grouper fishing farther offshore?

    • @FloridaSportFishing
      @FloridaSportFishing  10 років тому

      Nice to hear you had a solid day - awesome! The Saltist 20 is fine for light duty bottom fishing, etc. I would load it with 20-30 lb braid for maximum line capacity and sensitivity. Catch 'em up! Capt Mike

      Thank you for watching. Yes, you can certainly get away with it, however ultra-thin braid is an absolute must because it has so little stretch and such incredible sensitivity. The water is usually that coloraround the mouth of rivers. Miami doesn't have as many rivers I their area making their water a much deeper blue. And since the gulf stream runs through their it gets very deep very fast. And the water is very warm. Here in Alabama the water is a very dark brown getting a dark green as you go out farther, and you have to go out very far to find that deep blue water.

      Deuce, a lot of people don't like them, I love them on the grill with lemon pepper or McCormicks grill mates. You have to grill them. They do not taste good fried. They are a member of the Tuna family.
