I think this email is legit, other people left comments they received similar emails from CIG.
However, this isn't even the point of this video. The point is:
-CIG has now more than 1200 employees and this together with rent, server costs, PCs, materials etc, costs a lot of money.
-CIG is selling the family silver, F8C, F7C Mk2, F7A Mk2 and still was behind in funding in 2023 compared to 2022 when we look at inflation.
-I want Star Citizen to succeed, to become a fun, interesting and successful game
-However, Chris has very little to show for after 11.5 years. We have a laggy, desync heavy, boring tech demo with missing mechanics and missing basics
-CIG hasn't even finished the flight model and ship combat in year 12.
-Chris still prioritizes eye candy, fluff, time sinks and cool cinematic in year 12.
-Having a plan, having a concept, thinking things through, thinking in advance play no role for Chris.
-Chris has no interest in finishing the basics, basic mechanics and having some very rudimentary very basic physics in Star Citizen
-I have no hope left for Star Citizen as long as Chris is making the decisions.

CIG has extremely low productivity even compared to indy games out there, while the quality of what gets shoved out on to live is abyssmal even for an early access title, and inexcusable for a well funded long established studio. If Chris really does insist on signing off on everything and constantly contradict himself with rework then it would make sense that CIG's DNA would be to move only fast enough that you don't get fired because nothing you do is likely to ever make it to live, and even if it does the bar for quality is so low that you can have beards sticking through helmets and cumbersome physicalized blurry UI elements that would get a game design student flunked.

I think the end point is 1Q 2028 for multiple reasons. One is that they have a big 130 million or so redemption owed to external investors then. From their financial filings we know they don't have cash on hand so the Roberts family stands a good chance of losing control of the project then. Alternately they would need to cut staffing by 35% today to save that much in time. Second, the engine that started as one of the best looking games ever is getting old and the graphics on the live server are looking very dated. The cope now is that it's still one of the best looking MMOs , but if they delay a few more years it will be 'retro'.

    • @saleseng

The original kickstarter was supposed to be just that. We gave him MORE than enough money years ago for a completed game. He simply didn’t want to let it go. When big money comes your way, all of a sudden there is a “vote” for stretch goals, and ulterior motives like funding a fancy gaming studio, developing new technology, etc. If we don’t keep giving them money, the project ends abruptly. I GUARANTEE you had the backers at the time known where Roberts was leading us, NO ONE would have signed on to the perpetual donation of money to his “cause”.

      @RN1441 18 днів тому +4

@@saleseng These days there's a split between people who think that this is an intentional scam, and those that think it's a accidental. Basically nobody thinks that things are well run or that CIG is executing well, since you have to be delusional to overlook their 8 consecutive years of saying that a second star system is coming 'next year' then failing to deliver as reasonable, so it's down to whether they are malicious or incompetent. I'm in the group that thinks this is incompetence that has got us here, but I can understand why some lean towards malice. It's also possible that it started as incompetence then became malice when they realized that if they ever did deliver a complete game they were out of a job.

The issue is mostly about management and absence of a clear goal. A lot of developed things have never been delivred. Most things delivered stay eternally in Tier 0 or are redone several times. And most important, there is no fun gameplay with a real sense of progression. Even most advanced gameplays like mining and salvaging are dull because the only goal is money. Just linking some access or buying rights or renting to reputation would be more fun ! This tech already exist for the milllion dollar bar but no. Complex missions are all totally static and are demos (like the yacht ship attack, the ghost station, the satellite mission, the 4 reclaimers missions, ...).

The absolutely most charitable interpretation of what's going on with star citizen is that Chris is incapable of focusing and opted not to learn from his own past by putting a CEO in charge of him so now we are all paying for it. The less charitable interpretations are that he's a sociopath who doesn't feel he actually owes the backers what he pitched and doesn't really care that he's a decade late on that SQ42 beta, or 8 years late on that second solar system.

They already sold two of 'special reward ships' that weren't supposed to be sold this year, and one of those was outright power creeping a day 1 ship before the game has even launched. Normally companies don't power-creep until they are past their peak of popularity as every time you power creep a niche you get a bump of cash from the people who pony up, but you also alienate a percentage of that group who hit their limit. That CIG is already resorting to fairly blatant power creep shows some urgency on their part to raise cash fast.

I think the first sign of a cash crunch was when they pulled the rug out from under the Concierge members who had spent $10,000 and earned the F8 for their contributions by making the F8 available to purchase for all backers; why else would they do that unless they needed an infusion of quick cash that they knew the sale of the over hyped F8 would generate. Factor in more frequent sales, more frequent freeflys, a declining number of new accounts, layoffs at CIG and Sandi pandering to the Chinese audience/market at the Shanghai Bar Citizen asking if they want to see SQ42 on console or PC and you might be forgiven for thinking they might be struggling financially. Either way, their current funding model won't sustain the project indefinitely. They will have to come up with something else to keep SC development going or funnel the revenue from the sale of SQ42 back into SC development, if SC is to survive in the longer term.

Thanks for posting this. It indicates that marketing is being hard pressed to sell more to the point where they're digging through years old tickets to try to find people who might want big ships. I saw someone hilariously suggest that this is happening because someone 'cancelled' an order and that 'freed one up' but these are zero value digital copies. The only reason they'd do this is if the current artificial scarcity is no longer hitting their target. Given how CIG already had two 'break glass in case of emergency' sales early this year by selling ships that weren't supposed to be sold, it seems that 100 million per year just isn't enough for them to very slowly do very little.

This year might seem to be 'boring' but if you know the signs to look for there are clear indications that CIG is realizing how much trouble they are in. A fundamental reality of distributed services is that compared to a traditional 'one machine' server you get at least some of more latency, more inconsistency and more errors. You can make choices to trade off between them (e.g. an extra roundtrip confirmation step for deterministic physics costs extra latency. An extra retry round to avoid errors costs latency) but you pay this price for splitting your system in to pieces. CIG appears to have finally realized that meshing doesn't make everything better, it in fact requires a sacrifice to be made somewhere and this is the most likely explanation for mastermodes. I fully expect they will next announce an FPS refactor to increase ttk for similar reasons. Meanwhile, on the database front CIG appears to finally at long last have actually realized that the problem isn't the three database versions that 'haven't performed at scale' as all three are used by industry and do perform at scale, the problem is that CIG has created an architecture which cannot scale. The biggest red flag for this is that a year ago in September 2023 Chris posted on spectrum complaining that the graphdb had trouble scaling, but has since deleted it. If they really had found a bug in a database product it would be fixed and CIG would be shouting from the rooftops that they had overcome a big blocker to the desynch, lag, errors, and other crap that we deal with daily on live. Since he deleted the post it instead indicates that they realized 'oh no, there is no magic fix, we actually have to write our software to be efficient and not just abstract it away as somebody elses problem'.

The first time was in fall 2014 when the original SQ42 beta was supposed to come out to backers. CIG announced they weren't making that game any more and baited and switched with 'more better, soon, just need a bit more time'. This became 'answer the call 2016' which CIG fostered an impression of being a full release but it didn't come out. This became 'answer the call 2017' which also went nowhere. Then they announced beta coming in 2018 which they also didn't deliver on. Next they announced 2020 as bringing the long delayed SQ42 beta. Then it became Q3 2020 for beta, then in Q3 they changed their story to Q4 2020 bringing the beta for SQ42 just a few months away. A couple months later in October 2020 Chris just changed the story to 'beta is a long way off'. They really are shameless with bait and switch marketing and have now seven or eight times announced a beta date or feature complete, or 'just polishing now' and then not actually delivered. I also think CIG costs are very expensive with a lot of overhead and management cost. Just look at the ship pipeline. Above the cost of just the ship dev, you have to add the marketing team decisions, the design team just for pictures, then doing a advertisment videos, then other videos and ad docs before ven beginning the real dev of the ship. And a lot of ships are linked to external dev that have no clear agenda. So it must be a permanent stop and go at CIG, stopping and relaunching with new guys the work on ships. And at each stpe, management is making meetings and asks for documents to be created.

At GDC 2013 Chris said that the way he had set up the company was 400% as efficient as traditional publisher driven games, so we have to multiply their funding by 4x to 3.2 billion (unless you think Chris was just bitter about publishers forcing him to deliver in the past... goodness I wish this game had a publisher is a thing I didn't think I'd say but twelve full years of Chris lying to you will do that). To your point though another big concern is that CIG has created a ship backlog ponzi scheme in that they have now got about 10-20 YEARS worth of work ahead of them at their current rate of production considering that's mostly really big really complicated ships. They lied for years that they weren't making a ponzi because they were spending heavily on making tools to speed up development, but those have never materialized and even though they are now 5x bigger they are producing ships at nearly the same sluggish rate. Something has gone horribly wrong with how that company is run.

However, what CIG does is almost torture. I have done more than 5000 "immersive" elevator and metro rides by now, why can't we spawn directly into a spaceport or our personal hangar?
Even things that are quick and easy in other games like equipping items, picking up an item are slow and tedious in Star Citizen.
Most games are using a focus system, it is easy to select the right item.
Star Citizen is using a kinda focus system but my friends and I are hitting the wrong thing all of the time, like instead of opening a door, our characters sit on a bed.

with inventory, what we have is a paradigm shift, and some of it is CIG needing to prioritize a few things and the other is just perspective. at the very least, CIG needs to make 1 SCU boxes available at (at least) one spot per LZ. they really need to prioritize gun racks, lockers, etc, too, tho.
the perspective of players needs to shift in a way were people don't even need the item bank 90% of the time, because (ideally) they have called 20 loadouts up in a crate on the cargo elevator and put full loadouts and environment suits in a row of display lockers and gun racks.
the new UI lets you slide items over with one click and allows loadouts to be transferred via undersuit. could make display locker equip/unequip the same interface and process as recovering a loadout after death. imo, new UI should allow real time movement, too...
they actually messed up basic interactions pretty bad with the new prompt update. they seemed to change a lot of the programming and i'm not sure why... like the old interaction system had a highlight option, and that could have just been changed to show "F" as a texture, but no... now basic looting and handling of items, armor, and guns lacks option to pick up half the time... the new UI doesn't allow dropping often/at all, but can't pick up when it does, so doesn't matter.
i know what you mean with the prompt. an item on the floor behind you will stay highlighted and conflict with the item in your hand. the new interaction system has been giving me lots of issues as well.
when i get mad it's usually over certain feedback like the people clicking on items on armor (like mags, med items, etc.), instead of going to loot inventory. which first got the items made harder to interact with, then gets all interaction removed entirely. people giving feedback would rather destroy something unique than find a proper solution like putting inventory loot and personal inventory on the same button. instead of having inventory on 2 different buttons where there is a mechanical conflict.
at points i swear they fuck shit up or run tests on new features while the game is in a state of having little to no support for said feature on purpose just so the feature is rejected.

CIG needs to get Sq42 out the door and hope it is a success. If Sq42 flops, that reflects badly on SC and CIG's intellectual property (which I'm sure will be available for purchase one day).
Given that we are essentially getting a glimpse of Sq42 via the game mechanics being moved from there to SC, I'm concerned.
It's also worth remembering that Sq42 development was *not* tested by players, and didn't benefit from player feedback, and CIG probably used that route to speed up development believing they would A: get it right, B: win players round by waiting them out, C: could just wait for the criticism to die down while claiming they are definitely listening to us...
I've also noticed (since Turbulent were bought out) that CIG's approach has gone from "making the best damned space game ever", to just shoe-horn in anything and hope it's acceptable - I don't know whether that timing is coincidental or causal.

Well that momentum has stalled out with all these features being delayed again. We have to have a reason to bring people in, and right now I can't ask anyone to join in because I don't want my friends to feel like they're wasting their money. Worse still, Chris doesn't have a coherent vision, nor does he keep notes so after you've made the changes and sent your work back in it's several months later (since he's busy fiddling with everything else) and he will have changed his mind resulting in another round of rework potentially undoing several of the things HE asked you to do. This has led to an environment where there's no incentive to work hard or to work well as good ideas are not appreciated and your work is more likely than not to be discarded than approved.
