    Great video as always .One caveat about sticky mounts that I discovered. They're problematic on plastic boats like our P&H Virgo's. They will fail without warning . I've cleaned, scuffed, but they popped off. Fortunately, my lack of trust also made me tether, so I never lost a camera.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  7 місяців тому

      rotomolded plastic? Or thermoformed? That’s crazy because I have never seen one fail. It might also be where you mounted it, I could see a spot that flexes a lot might be problematic.

      @@AdventureOtaku Rotomolded, P&H Virgos. Every stickypad I've tried fails eventually. I tried alchol, paint prep, sanding, then I gave up. Stick on letters last a season at best. The same for a friends Perception, also rotomolded. The pads stick, but not for long. Thanks again for your channel. It's been instrumental in my kayaking 'journey'!

      Try this - www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1054051-REG/fotodiox_gt_qrholes_blue_quick_release_mount_with.html. - for a rotomolded boat you probably dont even have to seal the screw holes. It should be soft enough to self seal. Glad to be able to help your journey! Paddle safe.

    I just discovered your Channel today as I am continuing to hone the filming of my paddle adventures, especially where audio is concerned. I use GoPros (9, 12) and more recently DJI Action 4 for my water shots. And Canons for all other hiking and wildlife shots, along with the same DJI wireless mics as you, but not while paddling out of fear of a water mishap. I was interested in your mounting suggestions...and your background. I too was an outdoor educator (1st career) and now in retirement, I produce videos with that kind of focus. Thanks for your content and suggestions. Awesome that film-making is also in your background!!Best of luck reaching your goal of 7000 subs.

      Thanks for finding my Kathleen. I worked for REI Outdoor School, I opened the NC Market as the senior instructor, I hired and trained everyone, did the scheduling, stuff like that. I think I taught for REI in one for or another for 15 years. I also taught for NOLS expeditions. Kayaking in Alaska. And I am a current NOLS wilderness med instructor. For mounting to the boat, I use sticky mounts, and a Gorillapod under bungies. But that is it. I have used suction cups but with temp changes they can be unreliable. Let me know if you had questions about mounting other than kayaks. Happy to help.

    This video is so useful for me as I start my own UA-cam journey. I’m building myself a kayak and thinking about installing some ram mounts on a few spots on the kayak that I can fibreglass into place and have as permanent camera spots without worrying about the glue of sticky mounts or suction mounts that I absolutely cannot bring myself to trust. Right now I’m using a simple clip mount that has been remarkably adaptable since I can put it on almost any deck line or my PFD.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  5 місяців тому

      I have since learned that I can't use the small rig or any other cages because I can't go direct USB to the camera for audio. I would have to add a mic adapter and which means not only would I have the mic receiver on the camera but also the mic adapter.... so annoying....

    Thanks for sharing, really interesting for me to see how you work compared to me! We have quite the same cameras but I don't have external mic, don't want them to be wet. Nice to hear that you been paddle boarding, I come from paddle boarding and have just started to kayak, but do both now. I had pop sound on my gopro 9, maybe you have gopro 9 set on auto for wind, you get a pop when gopro 9 change between wind on and off in auto. So if you have it in wind on or off instead of auto you don´t get the pop. I have also bought longer thumb screws, can be a tips for the media mod, I don´t have the media mod but had the same problem with gopro floaty and thumb screw.

    A very interesting Video. I originally bought a Gopro 7Hero when they first came out, never removed it from its box and then gave it to my Oldest Daughter for Christmas as she wanted on to record her Horse Riding lessons from her perspective. Then last year I took the plunge once more, with the Black Friday Sale, and bought a Gopro Max, after liking they way that Nick Ray shot his footage for his UA-cam Channel Nick Ray Life Afloat, with just the one camera. Cost for me mainly. As there is still plenty of gear I still want to buy to make paddling that bit safer and increase the adventure side with touring.
    I am still in the figuring it out stage of were to put the mount, other than on my Helmet as Gopro only proving a curved base with the Max. I have bought others that are flat. I will also Tether it as fear of losing is a good driver. As Andy Kaylieno has eluded too in his earlier comment. I am not really intending to become a UA-camr, just want to record parts of my Paddling adventures. I prefer to be on the back of the camera, not really going to work that one with a 360 camera. I can at least capture the moment when I stuff things up from a few different angles.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  7 місяців тому +1

      Most of the 360 footage that has been used on this channel is from a GoPro max. I sold it last year and bought the Insta360… and it is a far better camera but more importantly, the GoPro software is HORRIBLE! The insta360 software is so much better. I kept waiting for GoPro to do a software update to make it better and it never came… I was going to include that in the video but figured I had given GoPro enough of a hard time.

    Thank you for sharing your experience and insight. It’s very apparent you are passionate about providing helpful guidance & can see why this video was a top rated post. Very informative. What version DJI drone are currently using. Looking at the housing it appears to be a Mini 3. If you were investing in a DJI Mini today would you stay with the 3 or step up to a 3Pro or even the 4Pro? Like you my intended usage would be limited to “alternate pov” as you sight in your video. ps I subscribed to your channel so you are one person closer to your goal!

      Thanks for the subscription! I only need like 1500 more by the end of the year (but subs slow for me as the summer ends…it’ll be tight) I am currently flying A Mavic Air 2. My only complaint with it, is I have to constantly adjust the gimbal so horizons are level. It is the third DJI drone I have owned, super easy to fly and operate, and I love the size….but what would I buy today….that is a great question. Today I would buy an DJI Air 3. Great all around drone. Great price….. If price was not a concern Magic 3 Pro. My only concern with the mini’s…. As drones get smaller they do less well in the wind. The Mavic air 2 does far worse in high winds than my Phantom 4 Advanced did (much larger, much more stable, much harder to travel with.) In Nova Scotia it auto landed because the winds were so bad.

    Really useful video, thanks. Always looking for ways to improve my video capture. How do you deal with keeping everything charged when on camping trips? I've been experimenting with both carrying lots of spare batteries as well as a solar panel, but it's not really great for drone batteries. Like you, I'm find it a challenge to use the drone when paddling... seen a few ditch, so now a nervous flyer if paddling!

    So when you're out on the water, are you just using the GoPro built-in mics? I've been wondering if there's such a thing as a decent waterproof wireless lav mic that could connect to an audio recorder in a hatch

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  7 місяців тому

      I am unfortunately using the just the GoPro mics - and if you listen to the audio in paddling in snow video, you can hear them getting worse and then better, they almost sound muffled a little, and I think its because they were so cold. I haven’t found a good option.

  • @kayak_homie
    @kayak_homie 6 місяців тому

    Okay, I watched this twice now, what is the feature the DJI action is missing?
    Is it because your two gopro's work simultaneously off the same voice commands, and the DJI action has different voice commands?
    I have an Action 1 because at the time of purchase, my limited budget only allowed for the outdated Action 1 or the outdated GP8, and the Action 1 was the superior camera. Ive had good experiences with it in the two years Ive owned it. Would like to eventually update to the Action 4 or GP10

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  6 місяців тому

      The voice command didn’t work as well, and didn’t work at all if there was any wind. It was a great camera and worked fine other than that - I also bought it just before the action 2 was released. So it was already a little old. I am really tempted by the insta action pro….

  • @kevincasey2947
    @kevincasey2947 7 місяців тому

    ...hmm. You surprised me with not preferring the drone that much. You said at time stamp 5:29 that it was hard for you to manage, (because you said you work alone). I get that but what about it is hard to manage?

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  7 місяців тому +1

      Think about sitting in a kayak, in wind or water that is moving, and the with one hand on the controller and one hand grabbing the drone (because you can’t land it anywhere) and then shutting it down. You are essentially catching a small flying lawnmower. With one hand. In a tippy boat. If you watch any of the sailing channels that use drones, they lose drones a lot, and they have much more space to arrange retrieval. And usually a person to fly and a person to catch.
