On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-20-14.
We’re looking at a 1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone with a High Performance 289 engine.
The car's Owner is George Young. George fixed Dodge and Plymouth cars from 1962 to 1965 at his company Young Restorations. So why is George driving this Mercury? Because he used to have this car in high school. Mercury calls this cars color Peacock Turquoise.

I was not a Ford guy back then, but the Falcon-based Comets were very attractive cars.The K-Code 289 engines were special. They were also scarce. I only saw one genuine HiPo 289 on the street back in the day. That little engine sounded really angry.

It's a beautiful car! Too bad he built and installed a HiPo 289 into a LoPo 289 car. It showed the VIN engine code to be a "K" which for a '64 Comet is a 210 H.P 289 4V (same as an early '65 Mustang "D" code engine with a larger carb). The HiPo 289 in the '64 Cyclone was a "D" code which was special order only. It came with all the HiPo goodies including engine, 9 inch rear end, etc.

Great car! Looks like a brand new one. I had a 1964 Comet that I bought used in 1970. It was the first car I ever owned. I drove it back and forth while in college. Mine was a 4 door with a 170 cubic inch six with three on the tree. Wish I still had it when I see what you've done with yours. Loved that car.

Great looking 64 Mercury Comet Cyclone. The 289 2V V8 was also standard equipment on the 64 Cyclone. The car was based on the new for that year 109" wheelbase Ford Falcon. The Comet rode on a 114" wheelbase and was about a foot longer than the Falcon. The cars original MSRP pricing structure mimicked mid sized models from other manufacturers such as the Pontiac Tempest, Chevrolet Chevelle and Ford Fairlane.

For 1964 Ford.finally changed the dowdy old Falcon/Comet styling to something sleek and exciting. I think I actually prefer the Comet styling over the Falcon's.

The K code comet cyclone was not in fact a 289 HiPo but a Mercury only K code 4v 289 std. 289. A very strange power play by Ford division due to a limited supply of Hipo 289’s.

I had a red 1964 cyclone with red and white interior. Mine came with a wood grain shift knob. My brother and I drove the tires off that thing. It was off road quit often. Brother even passed my Mom and me while he was in the ditch. He had taken the original motor out to save it when I got it from him. I put a 221 v8 made from two taken out of the scrap pile in the shed. Put 302 heads and a shoebox 4bbl on it . It was a fun car in Highschool. Still have a picture of it.Gave my friend a solid body and all my parts cars. I still have a full set of caps. Which you know are different front to back. My buddy Gary has a 64xl all restored with the same color scheme as your cyclone (no black of coarse). Thank You for sharing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway to add a pic?

As opposed to the 1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone, featuring its utterly well known 289 cubic inch motor, i believe that the regular Comet also came out with the optional V6 engine as well. I must agree that the front end grill of the cyclone itself looked somewhat quite similar to the Lincoln’s same characteristics, even though it was assembled on a Ford Falcon platform, during the same time period. The standard engine in the Mercury Comet for 1964 was the 170 inline-six. 101 hp. Wagons got a 200 inline-six, 120 hp, and this engine was optional in the other other models. If you wanted a V8, a 260 V8 (164 hp) was standard in Cyclone, optional in the other models. You could also pony up for the 'Super Cyclone' 289 V8

Beautiful restoration. I love the aqua exterior paint and the white interior, just a perfect combination. It's kind of evocative of the summer beach culture of the era. Beautiful pre plasticization era real metal instrument panel.
You're right about the front end looking like a derivative of the Lincoln Continental but it seems like the rear end treatment looks like it shared a lot of styling cues with the full size Mercury.

The high performance 289 was an expensive option. In the late 1960s Ford made the intermediate cars and the Mustang/Cougar large enough to accept the larger FE engines and the 351 small block although they added a lot of extra weight. That made the high performance 289 obsolete and it was discontinued.

My dad owned a Anniversary Silver 1964 Comet with a black interior, I was 9 years old at the time he purchased it.. His was two speed automatic with the six cylinder. He was a machinery salesman so the car saw a lot of hard miles, but all his comets held up well. My favorite car of all time is the 1966 Comet Cyclone GT - 390 CID 4 Speed, but next choice would be your 64 Cyclone. I worked from the time I was 14 until I was 17 for Wagner Auto Sales who were a Lincoln / Mercury dealer in PA. not too far from where I lived and where my dad purchased his first 62 Meteor. What a lucky duck you are to own a car like this, LoL.... You did a beautiful job bringing it back to brand new condition. Although the 390's were a very potent engine, those little 289 engines really ran good, even the normal ones they put in normal comets. My dad's 66 Mercury Comet Caliente had a 289 in it and it was pretty quick even with the automatic transmission.. I'd venture to say Ford's six cylinders and, the 289 engines were probably two of the most bullet proof engines they ever built and for their size had remarkable power. Love your car... Ironically my dad's first name was George also..

My 65 Falcon Futura had a 2.80 rear gear ! But I drag raced it anyway and had a great time. 289 2 barrel, single exhaust 210 hp. I won about 1/2 my races. Island Dragway ,Great Meadows NJ.
Mercury was advertised as "The Man's Car" back in the 60s. The 64 Comet/Cyclone was better looking than its cousin the Falcon.

Wow, this is pristine! I have an original paint polar white '64 Mercury Comet Caliente convertible and the color of this Cyclone appears to be peacock turquoise, the same color of the '64 Mercury Park Lane Marauder I just sold.

Very nice care, I love it. You are calling them hub caps, but back in the day they were officially called Wheel Covers and the experts would correct you if you called the hub caps. (Not calling myself an axpert.) A hub cap snapped on to the center half of the wheel and you could see the wheel between the hub cap and tire. Wheel Covers snapped inside the outer rim of the wheel and hid the wheels. The outer edge of the cover was in line with the outer edge of the wheel rim. They were more difficult to put on than hub caps. The hub cap you could put on using the palm of your hands at opposite sides. The wheel covers took rotating your hand around the cover while taping it on the opposite side with a rubber mallet.

My grandma had a '66 Comet w/289 in 1973 when I got my '66 Mustang w/289. Except for body styling they were pretty much the SAME Car. The stock 289 had a 2bbl Carb and got 214 horsepower. When I rebuilt the motor in 1973 and put a 4 bbl Holley Carb and Headers my Mustang got 255 horsepower on the Dyno. Both the '66 Comet and Mustang had a sort of "squishy", soft suspension ride and brakes were pretty weak but still they had plenty of power. (They could not be called "Muscle Cars" by any stroke of the imagination). A '66 Mustang w/stock 289 would only turn about 15.5 seconds in the quarter mile. But oh boy did that Mustang attract girls! After Steve McQueen's chase scene in "Bullitt" people thought all Mustangs were fast and powerful but in reality most had Straight 6 cylinders and even the 289 wasn't all that powerful. Great memories from an old Car Guy...

Interesting and important historical muscle car. Wish you would have spent a little longer on the VIN. H is likely Lorain, OH plant. K is for the HiPo 289. Also why not fire it up and go for a short ride along? Would like to see it go through the gears in the 4 speed, which is likely a Ford Toploader. You can also look at the metal tab on the driver door edge to determine rear end. Probably 8 inch. Also likely drums all around.

All cars fitted with the 289 Hi-Perf got a 9" axle, typically with a 3.50 ratio. In fact, in this car it is the same axle assembly that would have been used in the 64-66 289 Hi-Perf Mustang - housing and all.
260s and 289s (except the Hi-Po) got 8" axles, ratios typically 3.00:1 or thereabouts.
Six-banger cars got the Falcon light duty axle - integral carrier 6.75 or 7.25 in ring gear, 2.80s, 3.10s, or 3.25s depending on manual or automatic trans. Wagons usually got a little more aggressive gearing than the others.
Discs were not available for the 64-65 Comet Six cylinder engines got 4-lug wheels and 9" drum brakes, the V8 models got 5-lug wheels and 10" drum brakes.

Thanks, interestingly my first car was a 54 FORD V8/ 2D/ HDTP, WITH A **1957:**289 ENGINE / Carter 4 BBL, ETC.. We never got any documents from Service Station Mechanic bought from: (though, was dialed in) & did operate well for couple years ( with a lead footed 15/18 year old driving, etc, and always windered where the 289 came from.....Anyways, always liked this “HiPo 289s FORDS.....”!ps: this was one of dream Cars, in 1963-64,esp the 427 CYCLONE COMETS ( like Thunderbolts 427,etc)

Also, oddly, I never really maintained the Car ((* we had great Mechanics( BONA fide & honest), & Service Station in N Webster Indiana ….then, Me going to a 61/Ford GALAXIE ( a worn-out car) Convertible in 1965 (((** “”the Convertible, after month or two, scoring (( 3000 mi,(?)a low miles”, 1956 4 Dr/ Florida* car/TBIRD ENGINE/ Skirts/Dual exhausts thru Fender/ Blue Velour Interior, a serious keeper: freak accident totalled))))……Anyways, the worn out 1961 Convertible,( automatic/ engine) leading to 1966 GALAXIE 500 XL/ 4 Speed/ 352/4Bbl\\Deluxe Wheel/ Burgandy Color:: unfortunately NOT A Seven LITRE, or Disc Brakes**BUT** I built it up with METALLIC BRAKES/ Tires (special Firestones , both thru GULF CREDIT CLUB &/Service Station in Lafayette Indiana,+ other Monroe Shocks).,..Anyways, had to get COOLANT recovery System “”Ford KIT” at my home **FORD PERFORMANCE IN 1967(??), later to all Auto Parts outlets….etc..The GALAXIE XL really got my Attention ( factory Brakes weak,etc) , lot of miles until 1975 or so…actually a great driver,( less a cruise Control, as for Manuel’s not perfected yet. ) thanks.

I think that's the nicest Comet I've seen since they were new.Mechanical parts are easy to get,they're the same as the Falcon,and most will interchange with the early Mustang.The front clip and doors from a Comet and Falcon can be swapped and the lines will match up.I have a '65 Ranchero,but it's not near as nice as this.

A "K" code Comet is the same as an "A" code Falcon or Mustang, they only made 5 Hi-po Comets and the engine code was either an "M" or blank. This is common for Mercury owners to try and convert Ford engine codes to Mercs... it does't always work.

True story. The '64 Comet K code engine was the same as the Ford D code but with the larger carburetor from the 352 V8. It was approximately 215 HP.
Indeed. It is just a fantastic restoration. Fantastic! Absolutely beautiful. But it boggles the mind that they didnt restore the original 289/225hp K-code cyclone engine. I own one myself. 99.9% of the some odd 7400 '64 cyclones produced came with an engine code of "K". Which was indeed just an A code '65 stang 289 4v engine. SO SO many cyclone owners see the "k" and think theyve got an original HiPo '64 Comet. The following year the "K" did denote a 271hp solid lifter 289. A most sought after prize. But alas, in the '64 cyclone it was not the HiPo. This is such a beautiful car, I cant believe they didnt restore the engine to original.
I have a 1964 Mercury Comet 404 with Merc-O-matic 4v K code car it was all original. I pulled the motor and trans, the crank is a 1M also had HiPO push rods low compression pistons (I still Have all the parts) it had hydraulic lifters. I had to go .40 over Hi performance push rods roller rockers big cam lots more extras. I have had lots of fast cars but this is my favorite

my dad bought me a 1964 comet cyclone exactly same color except interior was palomino color,. like most 16 yr old with a lot of immaturity. I beat the car up till the motor blew. traded it off. have looked to repurchase it. It was in alexandria la. for a long time but heard the guy retired from ATT and moved to florida. I will keep looking.

Im from Australia but i have to comment on just how amazing that resto is. Right down to the smallest detail. Do you have an estimate on the market value for a car like that with such a quality restoration?? Id be interested to know. Thanks for sharing

Hi Tim Mitzlaff, Yes, you're right, unfortunately on my earlier car interviews I did not think of that, however that have been corrected and many of the cars I do also include an engine start, and sometimes a ride. If you type into UA-cam Search "My Car Story with Lou Engine" you'll find many cars that you can hear the engine too. Enjoy, Lou

I at one time had a '66 Cyclone, 289, 4 speed Hurst shifter. One thing about the Cyclone is that the front hubcaps are different from the rear hubcaps!

well it was at least 35 years later so took em a while. the record cars topped 145 on the straits Ive read and had either dual quads or if I remember correctly three two barrel carbs
@@radioguy1620 i read an article in an old hot rod magazine i had many years ago. as well as i can remember, there were a number of comets running laps at daytona and they were equipped with stock 289 cyclone engines(single 4V autolite carb). they averaged over 108 mph for the 40 day test.
you were correct, Promofile also said they broke a class c record of 124 mph AVERAGE for 10,000 mile, crazy stuff @@bobwhite5440

I've never seen an old Ford of those vintage sit so high unless it was modified.
My mother learned how to drive in a car just like this one in red or rather looked just like this one it was probably a comet not high performance anything owned by a local driving school.

It was 1964 and i still remember the drivers school teacher pulling up in front of our home in that sporty red 64 two door comet to pick my mother up for her driving lessons , she got her drivers licence shortly there after.

My first car was a 1964 Comet. Not a Cyclone. It had a 200ci straight 6 and a 2 speed auto transmission - what a dog. But it was *my* car at age 16 and I loved it anyway.
