Another element of Rivals that can be brutal for new players: defense is incredibly demanding. If you panic and burn your airdodge (as new players will tend to do), you're now a punching bag. There's no option to turtle up in your shield against projectiles, each one needs to be individually parried with fairly strict timing in an online environment. You can't simply press up B and go to the ledge, recovery is an elaborate mixup game. These can all feel like fun and skill-rewarding aspects of the game once you know what you're doing, but before that point...yikes. It can be tough.

The people that spend everyday practicing short hop combos into the blast zone, I love the game and Flashy goodness is an epic music man. If the game has a better way to teach the new players about the game's mechanic as well a way to get into the game, also please make the A.I better so casuals can be a little better

@@yourboy9236 If you wait ages for a match online and the person you DO get matched against is so much better you're dead before you can learn anything, it's an issue. The game teaches you these tools, but you won't learn how to use them properly against RoA's godawful bots. You go online and get destroyed, or you play with bots and don't learn anything. Those are the options the game presents to you, and you have to go out of your way (like what OP did) just to learn anything useful.

the thing about roa is that the game can truly be enjoyed when you are a hardcore player with 1000+ hours against another with 2000+ player trying your best and giving your all, if the game was casual it would be a shiity smash clone

You can also train your combos with the cpu since it's not very challenging and there are very few defensive options. Other than that, if you're able to play smash somewhat competently then you can play this game.

my biggest issue has always been the competitive scene. Don't get me wrong, i believe most games benefit greatly from having a competitive side to it, but if it's not kept in check, it'll consume the entire game.
I for a long time thought i was "Ok" at the game. I can wavedash, moonwalk, perform some of the trickier combos such as ranno's bubble recovery, etc. I fully believed I was a "beginner" level player. not good, but not bad either.
And then I hopped into a tournament. What was supposed to be a weekly 'amateur/beginner' tournament specifically for 'low-mid level players'
I thought i was a beginner. i thought i was on the lower end of the ladder, with just enough skill to maybe make it past the first round or at least take one single stock off of my opponent.
I'm not even on the ladder. 'Beginner' here, means "1000+ hours." I walked in with 422 hours on the game, having studied my frame data, memorized my main and my counters, all of it.
and then I got 3 stocked by an olympia in less than 5 seconds per life. Then I went into the loser's bracket.
I fought a second olympia. and got 3-stocked again. only this time, it took around 8 or so seconds for them to spike me each life. I was lucky just to land a couple attacks that time, but i couldn't secure the combo. Even after having practiced on tracking both random and perfect D.I. a.i's, the way they moved was too much to keep up with. It was like they had no hit stun, and just instantly went into int-fall the second they were knocked into the air!
That. is what 'beginner' means in rivals of aether. Don't go into this game if you plan on playing with people outside your friend group. Don't go into this game if you don't plan on grinding and studying it each and every day to keep up with the people here. It's not a casual game.

Here. Instead of all the whining about Rivals of Aether I hear about
    Some advice if you're new.
Before you even think of going Online,
    where you will probably get destroyed;
and want to whine & rage quit on day 1...
When I 1st started RoA; I went straight to the Options Menu, & tweaked everything. Then created my Profile, set up my Controls, fine tuned everything, & playseted the entire roster. And became a Forsburn main.
Do that. Tweak those options, make that Profile, & set Controls to your liking. Every instruction manual I've ever read since Super Mario Bros or DOOM, has said similar things to this.
    Next
    Go to the Tutorial Mode.
    Complete it. Seriously. Complete it.
ALL OF IT. Do not stop, until you get frustrated & want to thrash a few COMs, play the Tetherball Mode if you have it, pretending it's Orby's sandbag variant, take a break, or reinvent a spoken language by screaming into a pillow. When you're feeling up to it, go, & kick that Tutorial Mode's Orby shaped ass. Finish that Mode.
Get advice from UA-cam Videos on how to get past where you're stuck.
Then download Orby from the RoA Steam Workshop; & kick that spherical crystal ball around the Stages like a Tetherball. It's therapy.
You will not only learn the game, but have a sense of accomplishment.
We all have to start somewhere.
The Master Rival Achievement will be a testament to how dedicated you really are to learning RoA. It's what separates the truly dedicated Rivals players from the posers & whiners.
There's a very small percentage of gamers who even have this very Achievement. I've gotten it, on 3 different platforms; meaning I did
3x the amount of Tutorial Mode.
I have never wanted to thrash Orby so bad as I do now. Thank you Workshop Mode, along with whoever made Orby. Now I can take frustrations out on it...
Then, go to Practice Mode, go in by yourself, no COMs, set the Stages to "Aether Mode" - go to the Gates of Aether, with the 2... shadowy eyes, the Gate Guardian Stage, and Practice with Dodging, Parrying, Drifting, etc... the Aether Mode of the Aethereal Gates will see the Stage attack you, at random, just like the Aether Guardians in Abyss Mode; and Practice defending yourself against the attacks the Stage hits you with. Adjust the Game Speed, turn on Hitboxes, DI Assists, whatever, and practice at Defensive side of the game, until it becomes 2nd nature.
This has helped me understand the
DI Mechanics, Parrying (I'm still need to work on it) Dodging, Teching, Recovery & as a bonus, understanding the Gate Guardian Boss encounters. Parrying those eye lasers & massive ball of energy has never looked so cool. Any of its Attacks can be Parried, but the massive laser from the platform is best avoided...
    Complete the Story Mode.
Get all the Golds. All. The. Golds.
Do not stop; until you have all Gold.
You have 3 min per Character's Story, to qualify for a Gold Medal.
You have 20 minutes of overall tine
taken in Story Mode, to get The Speedy Rival Achievement, having gotten all Golds.
You can totally do this, & you know it.
If thousands of others can do it; ao can you.
This is an acid test to see how patient & dedicated you really are.
I'm a Smash Bros vet since N64, & I can tell - Speedy Rival Achievement is extremely difficult & frustrating to get. Let alone on 3 different game systems. But damned if I don't love Rivals of Aether that much to go through 3x the hell for those Gold Medals.
You wanna feel good about yourself? Get The Speedy Rival Achievement, & the Lone Rival Achievement. It's too hard! I hear you saying - it took me forever to get these Achievements, on 3 different gaming platforms - that's getting these Achievements, 3x over. I have never been so utterly infuriated yelling at a game, since Turbo Tunnel in Battle Toads. But I persisted, watched Speed Run Videos, & got those Gold Medals in Story Mode. And I am terrible with most of the Rivals roster, especially Wrastor, Orcane & Maypul. So my clear times for Gold barely get by.
Afterwards, get all the Character's Milestones done - you'll get a sense of appreciation for each Character.
Explore. Branch out. Play other Fighting Games; play their Tutorials.
    Soulcalibur taught me range,
Tekken taught me how to be technical, Virtua Fighter taught me patience, Street Fighter taught me Special Inputs, projectiles, etc. Guilty Gear & Blazblue taught me how Combo. Smash Bros 64, Melee, Brawl, Wii U, 3DS, Ultimate, taught me platform fighters. Killer Instinct taught me a myriad of things, like timing. Mortal Kombat taught me persistence... that damn Konquest Mode Tutorial was a nightmare, as was Shao Kahn on MK3.
Other games, like side scrolling platformers, taugh me well, platforming. Boxing games like Fight Night, or UFC games taught me how to economize my fighting style.
Rivals of Aether taught me, well...
a little bit of everything, and how to tie it all together. And to never quit, never give up. Always see things as a learning experience, even defeat. How did I loose? I did something wrong, I made mistakes. But I can learn from those mistakes.
Now, I do agree; Online Mode does need work, I've only played 1 match, & got destroyed by an Elliana. I'm not upset about that in the slightest; because this tells me; I need to improve, a lot.
So I practice with all COMs in VS Mode, constantly learning & sharpening my skills. I don't have a "system" of how I do things, I just go with my instincts - something I learned from Smash & other fighting games.
    Now, as for RoA's value?
    For the price of admission;
I don't feel cheated in the slightest.
I knew what I was getting into.
It's a gamble. Sometimes you luck out, sometimes you don't. RoA happened to be the luck of the draw (unlike Bounty Battle... good premise, poor execution, I don't recommend Bounty Battle, personally, it was disappointing)
but RoA is one of those games that may not be perfect, but it doesn't have to be; not to me at least, otherwise I wouldn't have it on 3 different platforms, sinking hours of my time into simply playing it for the fun of it. Hell, I find it relaxing; the menu screen music alone helps with my anxiety, the calming tones cause me to be more relaxed.
And then you have a Steam Workshop!? The ability to make my own Stages & Characters!? You're gonna have me cheating on Smash Bros... and that's saying a lot.
Anyway; these are my personal opinions.
I really want this game to do well; it's a rare gem, in a desert of gaming & entertainment, and I look forward to seeing how it will shape up.
I learned something from a box of Board Games, "let defeat make you better, not bitter."
Don't let the negative reviews discourage you; learn from them.
If there's a reason to complain; find out why. If a kitchen sink has a drainage issue; then you'd want to fix it.
It's good to see developers take criticism and use it for making improvements to their creations.
We need more people like that in the world
Any road, thanks to everyone who made Rivals of Aether the great game that it is.

Also, I can see how Wrastor seems broken, going after the Speedy Rival Achievement...
Sigh... 3x over... why do I do this to myself... right, OCD... and a love of the game... I love this game, that much... and I am terrible at Wrastor.
Speed Runners make it easy; getting Golds with each Character,
whereas I just neander my way through it... Wrastor is basically my worst character, followed by Orcane & Maypul, in that order.
I can pull off the intended strategies the Speed Run videos teach; but the AI is mostly a matter of luck, and in Story Mode; they don't cooperate.
So my Gold Medal times put me in the middle of the road Ranking... barely getting by with my worst Characters, but acing it with my best, and even then I struggle to get Gold... a billion tries later.
So no, Wrastor is not broken in any good way, for me at least. And fighting him is a pain in the ass...
      along with Orcane... & Kragg...
Go after The Speedy Rival Achievement; and you'll see.
      The Speedy Rival Achievement made me hate most of the Characters, the Lone Rival Achievement made me love them again. It made me feel emotions;
      on both sides of the spectrum;
Hatred for the Speedy Rival, self loathing for the Lone Rival, frustration for the Master Rival, but getting those Achievements made my feel something I rarely feel in gaming, nowadays; a sense of accomplishment; like I overcame something that seemed impossible.
And when it was all said & done; I fell back in love with the game & its roster, letting go of all that frustration & hatred I built up for the Speedy Rival Achievement.
Smash Bros has a lot of these, most of them have loopholes. Older games have moments like these, but you can cheat your way through them. But not RoA, no, this achieved through pure skill, pure luck, pure dedication.
When I cleared Story Mode; got all the Gold Medals, was presented with my clear time of 16 minutes or so, with that ending music playing to match; that made me feel something, that hit me in the feels, the way very few other games have done. Funny how a small, pixelated icon can stir up such emotions, I teared up, that 16 minute clear time, those Gold Medals, those 3 Achievement pop ups... Speedy Rival, Lone Rival, Opening the Gates... I earned that.
I sweated for that. I yelled & cursed myself hoarse for that.
      That meant something to me.
And I am not that great with the majority of the RoA roster, especially Wrastor. Or, other Characters seem broken or just not my style...
      Except for 2.
      But it's all perfectly fine by me;
as long as I have Forsburn &
Elliana, I'm good with that, as no othe Characters can scratch that same itch as these 2.
Besides; ya gotta love a skull mask & a mech.
Anyway; if an okay at best player like me can learn this game,
get the hardest Achievements done; 3x over, learn to code for Character Creation on Steam Workshop, when I have zero clue of what I'm doing, then I'm sure anyone can - those Rankings in Story Mode are seemingly bottomless pits of Clear Times for a reason, & while I'll probably never even dream of reaching the top, I don't need to, just to enjoy my game, those Gold Medals alone, just below the 3 minute mark, are enough for me, I just wanted to get the hard stuff out of the way; and leisurely enjoy my VS Mode Bot thrashing sessions.

As someone who had to climb up that skill curve I completely agree that online rivals is full of people better than you and the design of the game makes it so that better players not only win, but can win HARD. It is brutal especially if that's where you start. Fortunately there is a couple of saving graces,
First: Dan is working on definitive to clear up the DLC issue as well as expand to the switch.
Second: online has akways and will always be somewhat unreliable, but without servers to streamline connections, a frankly... not terrible just really lazy, matchmaking setup coupled with a small number of players means you tend to get matched to the same people and if they are better than you, or as is often the case, MUCH better than you, you can't really do anything except log on later and hope there's more people close to your level AND THEN YOU HOLD ONTO THAT PERSON FOR DEAR LIFE!
Third: I think abyss is super under-rated for developing skills. It's a weird tutorial in its own right. Each task requires a different kind of skill, zoning, moving quickly, launching in a specific direction, being evasive... but you have to beat story first and then grind pretty hard in abyss to develop those skills and you will STILL get trashed, just not as hard. The game would be better for casuals if the game had more modes like abyss and turbo that were intended for more casual play to just mess around with, and once I can go online, join a four way free-for-all runes-on lobby. I can start pulling in friends and we don't have to all go to one person's house where the best player in the room becomes the only one having fun.

I got the shit kicked out of me. I don't hate the game but now I see why I stopped playing it.

I think Dan just pulled the biggest ace up his sleeve. If whatever way the workshop thingie works is easy enough to use and people make great stuff, this will make the game WAY better for casuals. They'll still have to learn about tech, but the ability to pick up stupid broken fun characters makes it more appealing. There could also be broken characters so people of higher skill levels can fight against newbies without completely destroying them. If this stuff works, it'll carry the game to a whole new direction since it'll be the only platform fighter that gives people this much creative freedom, I think people could even buy the game just to make a character. And Dan said you'll be able to use workshop characters on matchmaking so that'll be a reason for dedicated players to go to ranked.

Awesome video! I don't even know where I fit into the Rivals spectrum. I have over 250 hours logged into the game, all of which are either in local 1v1 or in Abyss mode.
Can we talk about how Abyss mode is this INSANE grindfest? Don't get me wrong, I really love the mode, but it takes an ENORMOUS amount of time to complete. Especially if you do it solo, which I would not recommend to anyone... even though it's in the Solo modes section! Surely they could have made getting Rival Destination (or whatever it's called) a bit easier.
To be honest, I'm too scared to go online, since I know that even with ~250 hours I'm probably complete garbage haha

There's also small QoL features, bug fixes, and tweaks people have been wanting like:
-The player icons switching (or being default) in replays
-Your buddy switching with who you last played when in the practice window
-Currently the little blue button you press to see their Steam profiles has been bugged for a few patches and shows a random profile
    -Player/Region Blacklist

an interesting example to compare is ARMS (which I play competitively) It too has a small community of competitive players and isn't very noob friendly since there are many gimmicks that only work at low level, and uncontrolled spamming (controlled spamming, aka 'boxing' is much better and more nuanced ) drops off in viability quickly as you get better. Ranked is also dead, but ARMS has a lobby system for both competitive 1v1s (which may be in rivals, idk) and a casual lobby where more than one game can go on at a time. This leads to many top players playing friendlies and having tournaments in competitive lobbies, and groups such as www.casualarms.net/ utilizing the casual lobbies to great effect. From what you describe, rivals would benefit greatly from lobbies where lets say 4 players can join there, 2 play and 2 spectate (if it doesn't already have something like that). This would allow top players to play each other, and make online tournaments viable, which really helps a small community. (see again, the ARMS community)

It breaks my heart, but it's just what happens when you make a multiplayer indie game :/ I'd love to see Dan make Rivals under the banner of a AAA studio so that people will take his work more seriously, but even without that, he should be so proud of his game. Smash is an 80 dollar game with almost an 80 character roster with only 5 dlc. Of course people aren’t going to complain that the dlc is more expensive in smash because its a bigger series with many more characters to select. On top of that characters are mostly fan favorites from around the globe so there will be a much higher demands for these said dlc characters.

I really just wanted smash but can't afford a Switch and got tired of Brawlhalla so I bought this and holy shit is it gonna be a long journey to git gud.
As for the game's problems, it needs, in my humble bought-this-game-a-week-ago opinion:
-Bigger playerbase(please if some big UA-camr is reading this make a video on RoA that isn't about the workshop characters)
-Interesting characters, gameplay-wise they're good but as characters they are sooo uninteresting. They're just animals with some element. This is why Smash is more popular, because the characters are iconic.
    -Servers
    -Better ranked matchmaking
-Nerf Wrastor, or even better, *delete him*
-More characters, I think these 14 aren't enough, maybe add some of the really well designed workshop characters

    • @antkneewashere8923
      @antkneewashere8923 4 роки тому

-Rivals has been on it's way to getting a bigger playerbase for a while now, just give it some time. Direct 2 has brought many new eyes to the game, not to mention the Switch port.
-Devs have said numerous times that Shovel Knight is the final character, which is understandable as adding more characters would only increase the amount of time the devs spend nerfing/buffing their characters, which wouldn't be a good idea when they're so close to the finish line.
-Of course Smash has more recognizable characters than Rivals, it's owned by Nintendo. It doesn't matter what Rivals used for it's characters, they would look "uninteresting" in comparison.
-Rivals uses P2P, which is a much better option compared to servere for fighting games. Not to mention that the Rivals dev team is small, and they don't have the time or resources to make or maintain a server system.
      -Define "better".
-Wrastor keeps getting nerfed every patch lol.
-I would like to point out that some time ago the devs said "We are looking into ways we could bring original workshop characters to the game", and then less then a week later they hired the creator of Mollo as an official part of the dev team.

As a long time brawlhalla player trying to get into this game I can agree with some of the comments made in the video about just trying to learn the damn game. The main problem with Rivals is that no one plays ranked so if you suck you won't be ranked with other people who suck but are slightly better, you'll get matched up against people who will zero to death you within seconds. This wouldn't be a problem if there was an after game chat, even though this could increase toxicity it would help players who are worse at the game get better by allowing an opportunity for the better player to give tips. Honestly, i hate to compare games, but brawlhalla has an elo system to where you *usually* get matched up against people 100-150 more elo than you and this isnt a problem because you get 10-25 elo each match. Then again brawlhalla has a much larger playerbase so of course ranks will be more accurate.

As far as single player content, this doesn't even mention that Abyss is locked behind completing the story mode by default. Even though story isn't very long and Abyss is kind of a spoiler for it, they should really just make it available from the start and award a chunk of Dan coins for completing story instead imo.
Making it more appealing to casuals though idk. If Rivals wants to have competition as its goal then I think that's good niche and changes to the base game shouldn't have to be made for the most part, it's players coming in with different expectations thanks to Smash that's more the problem. I'm not gonna go into UNIST and get pissed that the tutorials aren't action-packed, I'm gonna get my ass beat for 30 hours minimum, and there isn't much outside of competitive fights. Fixing the online would go miles to make it less frustrating online, just gotta hope that it brings an influx of players willing to give it a shot.

The problem with ranked is that I got into platinum with little to no issue, because I was always fighting people who didn't know as much as me.

I'm so glad this wasn't just a half-assed meme video full of jump cuts and boring one liners to quickly address all the problems. Swear to god, those videos are not funny at all.

The biggest flaw of RoA is even for people that want to grind and be better : there is a crazy gap between all the fast spaced character (Zett, Ori, Wraster, Maypul) and the more heavy, more setup oriented characters like Sylvanos, Kragg or Etalus.
Not only most fast characers plays the same but they are crazy good; all of them. They also does not requires that much skills to start working.
This is the biggest issue with the game and I think it will kill on spot. Setup characters need to be more accessible.

All the points are right! I'm new to the game and I love it (especially in couch coop), but the online play is just stupid, CPU's and tutorial are useless

The one problem I have is that every time I load into a workshop match, I choose a normal balanced character, but the second the other guy loses, they throw a goddamn temper tantrum and either pick ronald or fox. and they always end it with using the forsburn "you got smoked' like what else was supposed to happen mr gets angry when someone is slightly better than them.

In the tutorial’s defense it may be dry but it is still a better tutorial then literally any fighting game I can think SF5, Tek7, Soul, skull girl, guilty gear.
Something that would really help new players is to have novel challenges that force you to learn by either removing your options and forcing you to adapt like some guilty gear games or make you use the tools you have in unusual ways like Target Break and home run were in smash.
It would also help to have a training room that shows you your hitboxes (good job brawl) and frame data( preferably not locked behind DLC like a certain other game...).

There is actually a certain tutorial section that can't be completed on keyboard, it has to do with some kind of weird di thing but you can't input the direction the game wants you to with a keyboard.

i like how most of these problems were fixed!
The workshop made the lack of content barely visible since new stuff comes out basically every day
The online has gotten better since you can pick regions and theres more game modes
The U.I got an overhaul and its easier to find most of the menus
Theres some more casual things like volleyball
so overall the game has fully improved!
