100% fox himself is hilarious. It's everyone else trying to cash in on it while missing the point that kinda sucks. the joke with fox is that it actually feels accurate. Dont be. As adam was saying, casual/meme characters are good for the health of the community because they bring people in, and allow the game to be enjoyed by a wider audience.
As much as the low-effort edits tire me out, I still believe the original Ronald is a great character. Most of the 100% accurate mods are pretty good as well, though some of them seem to miss the point on what the concept of "100% accurate" actually entails. Personally, I think two of the best 100% characters are Melee fox and Brawl MK. Yes, they _are_ over the top, no one can deny that, but it's done in a way that reflected why they were so strong in their original games, and what they were actually capable of. The fact that 100% MK makes everyone else except him trip is the icing on the cake.
I hate how people keep reposting new and more powerful versions of the same characters. Ronald himself is a fun character, we don't need people uploading Cosmic Ronald or more powerful Ronald.

The OG Ronald? I have mixed opinions about him. I ain’t gonna lie here, Alzter’s Ronald is a great character where he’s inspired by his MUGEN incarnation, but the bad side of Ronald was how it indirectly affected Rivals. For example, low-effort Ronald edits. Also yeah... I’m the same guy who made that peculiar Golden Ronald video. I guess you can say I am also at fault for getting Ronald’s popularity to rise.
God,I can beat golden Ronald but what the hell is this? Ronaldgaucho? That’s just unfun. Here’s a list of ronalds I can beat: Ronald McDonald Golden Ronald Cosmic Ronald That one form after cosmic. [barely]
This exact thing happened with ZeRo. His fanbase was constantly asking him to play Rivals because we know how good a game it is and he would love it's solid gameplay compared to Smash Ultimate's ... interesting mechanics. He finally played it, but only played the meme workshop characters! He never even experienced what makes Rivals great and that's so frustrating.
As a longtime member of the Mugen community, I'd say you hit the jackpot with your gambles. I just wish people put effort into giving the memes a slight level of competitive depth so that both sides could appreciate them.
You think you could reccomend me some deep mugen characters? I'm talking ones made with competitive play in mind and that have varied movesets (my prefrence bieng ones that have a lot of fluid movement options in the air and stuff). I tried to download a couple of characters but the only good one in the bunch was Haruhi Suzumiya made by Nep Heart (Its an edit of Choiyers version but its a REALLY good edit!), ironically she's kinda a "joke" character since she doesn't fight in her source material but gosh dang she's fun to play! Anyways any reccomendations would be dope if you could spare the time! ;)
@@Alienrun Dragon Claw by the late Reu is a fantastic exploration of the rushdown archetype taken to its zenith. He's a slick and stylish combo fiend of a robot with rushdown as his only gameplan, but it surprisingly works well for him. If you want a more recognizable fun character, try Super Mario by Shin Ryoga & Neo Ankh with BBHood's balance patch-he's similarly rushdown-focused, and very fun to see and play as

I haven't even downloaded Ronald. I refuse to play into McDonald's scheme. Also I like the OCs a lot because characters like Mollo and Astra and stuff feel like new characters being added to the game.
To be honest, I almost feel like they should be included in the Definitive Edition in the future to buff the roster for console ports. They're high quality enough for it to work.
@@waspoppin4784 yeah thats part of it. Funny thing is Rivals is balanced so well kragg still frequently makes top 8, if not just flat out winning tournaments

I feel like a sort of way to solve this is categorization, and spotlights given to the good ones. Meme characters and competitive characters should be able to coexist without getting in each other's way. Like Drake suggested, i think it would be good to have a spotlight given to the good characters made, and then have that split into multiple categories so that a person looking for a certain way to play can find what they want.
@Alex I’m wondering why they didn’t have categories to begin with, I mean I’m not expecting a “meme” or “joke” category out the gate, but you’d think having categories would be just a default part of a workshop..
What could do to make people see more characters is that the rivals dev's can picks a list of characters (like 5 or 10) every week and puts them on a front page so people notice them
First of all, thanks a lot for the Magicka Wizard shout-out! And second, I completely agree with you, we sometimes get a little annoyed with how much views Ronald brings and "steals" from other characters, but the existence of Ronald's mod is what brought a ton of new people to both Rivals and the Workshop, so we can't exactly complain about that. Hey there. I made M.U.G.E.N videos a long time ago. Ronald's Rivals appearance is 100% based off his Mugen incarnation moves, sounds, all of it. And just like in Mugen people are going to want to challenge other people to take down Ronald and then people start making edits of the character. It was and still is a popular sport to try and make the most insane Ronald ever. The Mugen community got used to the fact that Ronald was a big force and the rivals community is sadly going to have to learn that lesson too. Eventually just like with Mugen it will calm down but for now get used to Ronald being everywhere. Also Mugen can be played seriously. Some people make full games dedicated to custom OCs or recreating other games like Marvel Vs Capcom with old and new characters that try to replicate those play styles to a T.
Speedrunner link kinda defined what a meme character should be. You should check him, he is funny, wacky but also complex and somehow balanced. Fox came out long before most workshop character and back then none of them were really balanced. Good ocs are still more popular than most memes excluding few old-timers. Kinda wish that op character would be more creative thought. Rare Akumas, Dios and Ronalds besides being overtuned, could throw a damn moon at you. I remember a mugen Ronald edit that acted like damn malware, deleting his opponents files from the game xd
I just wish the workshop had more tags so I could click a button to see “real” characters, or the “gimmicky and busted” characters. There’s just way too many 100% accurate and OP sandbert characters that I don’t care about! And I’ll accidentally gloss over the good ones cuz they’re wedged between “42069% accurate pichu” and “SSGSS Ultra Instinct Cosmic Fox”
This whole situation has ended up discouraging me from continuing on making any more fighters beyond Cactuar. The reason is that the next fighter I wanted to make was The Burger King, furthering the meme. Development was proving to be a lot of effort, and I'm afraid people would end up hating it for similar reasons to Ronald. Maybe I could pick it back up sometime in the future, but not soon.
The way you advance the joke is you make the burger king, but he's actually a very balanced and realistic character that uses the ronald idea to make a fun if gimmicky character
Sure, but the people who will take workshop seriously was ever going to be a small population. Bad press is still press, and if the meme garnered some regulars, it's good for the community.
@@chloeduncan5235 yeah, but it will be nice if others sis this thing called playing more than 5 percent of the game. We are not asking you to turn into tryhard competitive players, we just want people to play other parts of the game.
A thought experiment for fellow workshop developers: Meme or not, give your characters a better-than-default AI. It might be the best way for 'casual' players to learn and enjoy them.
I just want to find good rivals characters that are balanced. Not stronger meme character #71301 Ronald and 100 percent accurate fox were fun. The joke ran it's course. I want more original characters are balanced.
I really wish there was a tag that anyone in the community with like 50+ hours could add to a character to say "Balanced" so that it would be easier to find good balanced characters.
Yea I had that opinion, but then I was like why do I even care about this balanced OC? I'm going to play it a few times and then its kinda just over and whatever. Like you could play a workshop OC a lot and get good at them, but like why? All you can do is play them basically with your friends and that's cool, but I just feel if you want balance stick with the original cast.
Mugen didn't really have the same sorta problem in the "joke that gets repeated" aspect, mind you this is mainly due to Mugen's original heyday predating the peak of youtubes popularity by a few years (im aware that their are a few mugen videos, perhaps even a decent amount from ~2006-2008-ish but UA-cam didn't really hit it stride till around 2010 and mugen faded from popularity ~2008 until it re-surged when Salty Bet became a thing). In addition I really dont think that characters like Homer and Peter Griffin were really a side effect of Ronald's popularity, people make random non-fighting games characters all the time for mugen to this day, its more a side effect of having the ability to make whatever you want if you have the know how, I say this because the original Ronald was, at its core, a comedy edit of Heritage for the Future Dio, a high effort shitpost if you will, while Peter and Homer were their own characters with unique movesets.
It's kinda like how all the streamers started saying "sus" when amogus was at its peak, and then they started complaining about people using that word that they themselves helped to make popular
Well, probably too late, but I'll still drop my two cents here because I feel like this video kinda applies to me. I had heard of Rivals before but never seen much that made me want to pick it up. I played a decent amount of Smash and owned all games since Melee (though I was still fairly young during that time). And I always appreciated the Smash series as a fighting game with a very low skill floor. I don't have to remember any complex button combos, I don't have to learn how to do that weird Z motion with the joystick consistently in order to not just be locked out of certain moves. The inputs are simple, and it's fairly easy to remember which button press does what. But I always felt like Rivals had nothing that it could offer me over smash from the perspective of a casual. Way fewer characters and more complex mechanics just caused me to shy away from that game. And then I found a video with Ronald McDonald, namely the one by Alpharad. And I found his other videos with modded characters. And I'm a huge sucker for mods. An active modding community makes the game 10 times more interesting in my eyes. And seeing some very interesting, and very silly characters, I definitely was intrigued. Also by Ronald, but my favorite was probably Untitled Goose. And so I grabbed the game when I saw it on sale, and I'm enjoying it a lot. I still feel like this game was made for people much more into the competitive Smash experience then I am, seeing how I as a noob already considered some of the later tutorials daunting... but I still love the game, and there are plenty of great Workshop characters I enjoy. And even though Ronald wasn't really the thing that sold it to me directly, that was the first video I saw telling me about the Rivals Workshop, which is 100% the reason I own the game now.
As someone who downloaded several joke characters for rivals, I found a really cool OC (whose name I can't remember) but she's actually main material for me. Like, if I went against my friend and he had her, id be using her a lot. Not because she's broke, she isn't, she's just really fun to use with some cool mechanics
Honestly, I can totally see people picking this game up because of Ronald. For me, it was seeing Morshu, and just how well polished he is despite him being a meme, that got me to actually boot up Rivals and has me considering making my own character.
Mugen had a very similar situation, where it sort of had two different types of characters You had people that tried to make legitimate characters, and then you had people trying to make the most busted characters possible, like rare akuma or Omega Tom Hanks, or Chuck norris It really is just a case of it is what it is. It's good that we have a casual side to the game. Hopefully the funny Ronald players will eventually want to try the base game, and maybe get into it
the busted character wars got to a point there's a character that literally hacks the mugen engine in real time to make so it's impossible for them to lose
The problem I have with low effort community creations is that it promotes an idea of getting more by working less. An interesting character with depth would be fun for both sides while a something trendy loses value quickly, only appealing to the flavor of the weekend side.
Much respect for the MUGEN shoutout! If you want to learn more about the balanced and intricate side of it, I'd highly recommend stuff like Hyper Dragon Ball Z, Capcom vs The World, or Ruroni Kenshin: Soul and Sword. The more serious Rivals and MUGEN communities need more exposure!
That's too Old school. Any Normal Character: NO YOU CAN'T JUST MAKE BROKEN AND OP MEME CHARACTERS SaltyBet Joke Characters: Ha Ha Ha FUNNY TOKI YURI DI AAAAAAAA GREEDY MINERS
I've been really tired of the overpowered characters and I just want the good characters to come out. (They still are but I want content on those and not cosmic Ronald) Not saying these characters aren't fun but it gets boring after a while. It even makes the original overpowered characters not that powerful in comparison to ultra instinct Ronald and all of that I still like to see my dumb fun characters every once and a while but I don't download anything other than the base and some of the ones I like. Like Speedrunner Link my dudes. HE'S SO GREAT YOU GOTTA PLAY HIM. IT'S HOW YOU DO FUN/DUMB CHARACTERS RIGHT AJSIFBWIALALALFFDJDKEOWKWLWL`````````` but in all seriousness I don't have an issue with people liking the op characters it's just not for me specifically
meme culture has become an annoying nightmare. People find one thing that's funny or resonates with people and spam it into oblivious while at any oppurtunity to the point where it looses it's original meaning. "100% Accurate fox, that's a funny joke, lets just copy it infinately so that it loses what made it funny."
There are a handfull of actual good and balanced meme characters with effort put into them like speedrunner mario and link Its just mods like these defeat the point of the mods, its turned into “Make your character as powerful as possible” and its giving meme characters a bad rep
As someone who plans on buying Rivals soon, I appreciate the talk and recommendations at the end. It’s nice to know that there’s many good options out there that won’t just simply be overpowered meme characters, overpowered inserts, or characters that you think would be great but only have like two moves. Okay I may have seen a few too many rivals workshop videos.
I don't have much of the greatest knowledge in the mugen community; however you did hit the nail when it comes to it's similarities as of recent. busted abandoned wips, sprite rips with not much effort thrown in or characters that don't have very creative/interesting movesets to utilize. from what i remember, joke characters became insanely huge, almost to the point of annoyance where it was a power contest to see who can make the most busted and unwinable character, resulting creators not in that trend to program anti-cheaps and auto kill if they happen to fight said character. i have a feeling at some point, rivals might go through that down the line if this keeps up. as much i like silly characters/boss characters, i prefer one's that take it serious challenge instead of relying on ai mishaps or having to use another busted character just to even have a chance to win. Come to think of it i was briefly working on a rivals workshop character awhile ago, other projects prevented me doing so, sadly. maybe i can come back and return to it when i get all my other sprite projects done.
Yep, just look how MUGEN is a meme than Battle Card Wars an actual game well made in MUGEN, is being targeted as "just a mugen game" even if it's way more polished than an average mugen meme game
It would be cool if the devs more explicitly encouraged the really well made custom characters, I'm kinda blind so no idea if they did this already but putting some of the good ones in the spotlight would definitely help
to a certain extent they've done this twice. 1. adam would go on the workshop and pick his favorite workshop items to add them to a specific category, unfortunately if you updated your character they would be removed 2. they very recently picked 4 workshop characters (mollo, hodan, olympia, pomme) to be officially added later this year
I wish people would notice mario pissing more he is a truly fleshed out and well rounded character. You would think he's just a meme but there's actually more too it. You have to manage his piss because his normals lack range and his pissing beam is his only recovery tool as well as his best pressure tool in his kit
Ya I love this game base and workshop. The complex balanced characters from workshop are so much fun, but I have also had a lot of fun messing around with a competitive friend playing 100% fox/falco (with certain moves banned (fox jab)) So I enjoy both. But getting to my point of this comment my friend who isn’t interested in fighting games at all saw Carson play with a reskined sandbag as Peter griffin and he thought it looked fun so he downloaded it for the memes. Now he lives the game and actually got into it. So even some of the sandbag meme reskins have purpose.
I sometimes stream a MUGEN style Rivals Workshop CPU tourney on Twitch, but I just wanted to say that with tiers and leagues, all good characters will be recognized, so will some bad ones! We should start doing tier lists and/or set up league pods to determine relative power level. I'd personally LOVE to see youtubers do this too!
I feel like Ronald isn’t really that bad. I think that if you don’t wanna play Ronald you don’t have to, and I don’t really care about Ronald videos, but I think Ronald is actually good for Aether sales. People see Ronald and they find out about the workshop and how it’s much easier than mugen, and they want it.
Hm... I wonder if I should bring my OCs into Rivals Workshop. I used to make comics and I've always imagined a crossover consisting of the characters I have created over the years. If anything I'd probably just do 3-5. And I would love to get into sprite creation. Should be a fun little project.
Cant even lie before the workshop update I barely played rivals but now its honestly one of my favorites to play. The whole OP character thing is fun only for a certain amount of time until I wanna actually play the game and not just insta-win thats where the well made balanced characters come in.
(Just a heads up this is coming from someone who’s never actually played Rivals) For me, Ronald is a silly character that when he first came out was really funny to me, I still like the og one to this day. I will agree though, people only making low effort re-skins just to be the new most powerful character is really dumb. I think there should at least be a balance between the actual characters with effort put into them, and the meme characters. I have no problems with having meme characters like Ronald or the 100% accurates, just as long as they’re not the only thing in the workshop. (Also nothing against him, but Linklight was the guy who probably made the most videos on Ronald)
Honestly The OG is fine, sure its broken but it was the original and was a cool idea. The Other ones that were made were just lazy edits. Honestly though i Like TCO (the chosen one) Better.
For Mugen we sort of had an issue, the community loves meme characters, but tends to respect more of the professional characters. Memes kind of appear then go in the community. But there is way too many op Donald edits
M.U.G.E.N. Creator Here: pretty much spot on., especially since Ronald in Rivals is essentially a hack of a hack of a character in an established game. But when I came along in the M.U.G.E.N. scene, not many people made joke characters because of the sheer dedication it took to build a character (59 standard, 35 optional animations + attack animations), so when they did, most of the community saw it as a accomplishment to praise, not to scorn (unless, of course, it was a hack of a previously made character)
I think we need Ronald's good old rival, KFC Colonel Sanders (which was also from Mugen, and set to be rival of Ronald). Then we could balance that out...
10:34 "Probably some other meme character that will come and replace him and everyone will hate next." Someome make Adam Carra a playable character, and make him broken enough so that he wins the Wrastor Match Up. To me, Ronald is one of those broken characters where he broken, but at least it makes sense, unlike 100% Accurate Cloud which is "LOL, big moves big funny." Ironically, I like Clood way more as a result.
they're clout chasers. they know big youtubers will check out The Funny mods, so they do it. i'm guilty of this myself, but for an april fool's joke that i honestly forgot to unlist the day after lol (you actually showed it when scrolling through the workshop pages lol)
When I saw that Ronald McDonald was a character in this game I thought the same thing would happen that happened when he became the most popular character in Mugen... People would be upset because a clown was stronger than characters (or bosses) that they like... in fact I was also one of those who at first did not like how Ronald beat everyone (in mugen), then I Note that it was not bad, the creators have the same possibility of returning to any character as strong or stronger than Donald without exception. I was a little worried that the same thing would happen to Rivals of Aether as to Mugen (that there almost all the characters are Donald made to WIN everything, some better than others) but nothing prevents you from playing not those characters... and use better ones... As someone who enjoys watching Mugen videos (especially the battles between Donalds) I can say that it is a good light show to see, who is stronger than who, what powers he has, etc. (It's like robot fights... you can build a very ridiculous but functional robot or you can make one specifically made to win ... or both if you can do it...) usually the best Donald are those who are made to win only, an example of this is the almost immortal and unstoppable *Final Dark Excellent Donald...* I don't know, I think one can play that game without using or adding any Donald... and PROHIBITING THEM is silly because you prohibit the good creativity that some people have...
**Speedrunner Link has joined the chat** But for real, the new speedrunner link is actually really well made and balanced, you should try it out! He’s not really a meme, plus he dies easily if you fuck up a move sometimes.
If it wasnt for me discovering these crazy meme characters for rivals through youtube videos, I wouldnt have gotten into rivals in the first place, and I am thankful, because otherwise I wouldnt have found out about this wonderful game.
I definitely see the copy cat stuff with the 100% characters. The 100% Fox was based off Terminalmontage's interpretation of Fox. People didn't realize, and it turned into something nobody cared about. I do like that Speedrunner Link actually understands, and I feel like that would make it better than the others. It's sub par original.
Don't forget 100% Accurate Fox and several others aren't (i'm sorry) 100% original too, even if it came before Ronald. The design is based on TerminalMontage.

It's not too unlike Mugen's situation with Ronald.

@Alex
I’m wondering why they didn’t have categories to begin with, I mean I’m not expecting a “meme” or “joke” category out the gate, but you’d think having categories would be just a default part of a workshop..
the low-effort ronald edits were a plague on MUGEN too back in the day

I’ll be dead honest...
The furry OCs are usually the coolest, most fair, competitive, and interesting characters in the workshop
no shit, it`s because the whole base roster is basically that.
Yea because the actual characters are furry oc's
Because they're not memeing and are instead trying to create a well balanced character that fits the design of the rest of the roster.
Have you seen the kitsune boss fight it’s awesome
Jarius Santiago your the one coming off as one trust me
Speedrunner link kinda defined what a meme character should be.

It is. MUGEN was a meme and so is this. Deal with it, not the end of the world.
Sure, but the people who will take workshop seriously was ever going to be a small population.

A thought experiment for fellow workshop developers:

I just want to find good rivals characters that are balanced.

@@user-bo6vy5eg8g Are you talking about the 16 they selected for the Workshop side event at Genesis 7?
Ronald : Haha, im the best character with op moves, and i'm nearly unbeatable
Agent N. : Allow me to introduce myself.
We need a way to sort out the joke characters from the really solid ones in the character select screen
you can make categories in extras/steam workshop in-game
Not because she's broke, she isn't, she's just really fun to use with some cool mechanics
this was 4 years ago and is still horrifically relevant
Honestly, I can totally see people picking this game up because of Ronald. For me, it was seeing Morshu, and just how well polished he is despite him being a meme, that got me to actually boot up Rivals and has me considering making my own character.
Mugen had a very similar situation, where it sort of had two different types of characters
You had people that tried to make legitimate characters, and then you had people trying to make the most busted characters possible, like rare akuma or Omega Tom Hanks, or Chuck norris
It really is just a case of it is what it is.

1. adam would go on the workshop and pick his favorite workshop items to add them to a specific category, unfortunately if you updated your character they would be removed
2. they very recently picked 4 workshop characters (mollo, hodan, olympia, pomme) to be officially added later this year

I wish people would notice mario pissing more he is a truly fleshed out and well rounded character. You would think he's just a meme but there's actually more too it. You have to manage his piss because his normals lack range and his pissing beam is his only recovery tool as well as his best pressure tool in his kit
I’m distraught over this not being a top comment

You should check out Speedrunner link: a meme character with effort and thought put into it, and not broken!
Hey, Adam! I just found Rivals becaus eof the Direct and your editing video! I'm very excited to play and enjoy binging your videos!
These memes is what's inspiring me to get Rivals and make some characters
Honestly The OG is fine, sure its broken but it was the original and was a cool idea. The Other ones that were made were just lazy edits.

The 'dumb furry ocs' are some of the best characters
For Mugen we sort of had an issue, the community loves meme characters, but tends to respect more of the professional characters. Memes kind of appear then go in the community. But there is way too many op Donald edits
I really like the idea of the Magicka Wizard.
I feel like this is the same thing as stage builder....
I worked so hard on this cool inventive stage
Other guy: LOL MEEEEEEMEZZZZZZZ =P
Exactly. Why put effort and creativty when you can recreate reddit memes
I think we need Ronald's good old rival, KFC Colonel Sanders (which was also from Mugen, and set to be rival of Ronald). Then we could balance that out...
why they hate ronald? it's simple: he beats up anime characters for a living
they're afraid of his superior power

Someome make Adam Carra a playable character, and make him broken enough so that he wins the Wrastor Match Up.
To me, Ronald is one of those broken characters where he broken, but at least it makes sense, unlike 100% Accurate Cloud which is "LOL, big moves big funny." Ironically, I like Clood way more as a result.
I wish someone could make a balanced or tweaked version of Ronald. Would be way better of a character.
100% Accurate Fox is actually one of the few things of that type that has origins, being Melee Fox from TerminalMontage videos
I mean I wouldn't say it's entirely based on it
Correct, it isn’t, the design Fox has is based on Melee Fox. The moves come from regular Fox, just exaggerated.
Anyone who has played Ronald can attest that he’s an incredibly fun character, but honestly the powercreep should have stopped at golden ronald.
You know the powercreep is too much when the OG "cheapie" has an anti-cheat.

(It's like robot fights... you can build a very ridiculous but functional robot or you can make one specifically made to win ... or both if you can do it...) usually the best Donald are those who are made to win only, an example of this is the almost immortal and unstoppable *Final Dark Excellent Donald...*
I don't know, I think one can play that game without using or adding any Donald... and PROHIBITING THEM is silly because you prohibit the good creativity that some people have...

But for real, the new speedrunner link is actually really well made and balanced, you should try it out!
Damn, you really called out my japanese-named furry oc Hikaru like that huh
I definitely see the copy cat stuff with the 100% characters. The 100% Fox was based off Terminalmontage's interpretation of Fox. People didn't realize, and it turned into something nobody cared about. I do like that Speedrunner Link actually understands, and I feel like that would make it better than the others. It's sub par original.
Don't forget 100% Accurate Fox and several others aren't (i'm sorry) 100% original too, even if it came before Ronald. The design is based on TerminalMontage.
"Noones gonna remember random Japanese name characters"
The first version of MUGEN Ronald was him with less moves and sounds from japanese mcdonalds commercials.
