    As I'm coming to the end of watching this whole series, I'm realizing that this series was ahead of its time. It seemed to really blaze the way for many of the 80s and 90s sitcoms, including Seinfeld and Friends. The whole idea that single men and women can be friends, plus the style of interaction. I like it more than MTM, tbh. And i am fully convinced that MTM herself "graciously" encouraged Valerie to take on her own show because she didn't want to be upstaged as Valerie came into her looks and acting skills. Just my 2 cents

      Yes,, Rhoda really had a way about her that really makes you feel you knew her and wanted to be friends with her. In fact excellent. comfortable cast preformers all of them.Makes me wonder what they were like. outside of their acting - I bet not much different then what they portrayed on TV.

    What I love about the Rhoda show is that you were often surprised by what was coming next. Sure, the characters were clearly written, but story developments were full of wonderful surprises.

      All the off the wall things we used to do kept us from needing a gym. Remember going walking just to go walking and talk? Not for exercise. But just for the fun of it? Remember actually talking to friends?

    Remember during the 1980s and any decade before, when sitcoms had a 2-part episode, and you had to wait until the next week to watch part 2? My brothers and I thought the wait was torture! LOL. I saw this show new. Benny is hilarious when he tells Brenda he doesn't like her or her family. When Brenda brought her newspaper to Rhoda's, why didn't they just trade sections without Brenda having to do tasks for Rhoda? Ida was funny.

    • @RepentfollowJesus
      @RepentfollowJesus Рік тому

      I remember. It was awful to wait but so worth it. I was a kid too. Then got hooked on soaps for a while. They always had a cliffhanger on Friday to torture you until Monday. And nobody dare call on Monday at show time! Plus they did Dallas. Which I barely remember. They did like to tease and leave us hanging !😊

    This episode is hilarious, more so while they are in the car.It would've been even funnier if that Johnny Venture, the lounge singer, would've been in that car with them.That road trip scene should've been longer, it was hilarious.Benny is so funny with dry humor, I'd think Brenda would be laughing alot.Ida is funny too, with her sarcastic humor.Between Benny and Ida, I'd be laughing so much my eyes would be watery.Even in the late 1970's you could move around in a moving vehicle, wear no seat belt (many just went across one's hip area and had a large solid metal buckle part that resembled Elvis' buckles); you could hold an infant in one arm while driving, a passenger could hold a baby on their lap,and kids could sit in the rear of pickup trucks, all of that on the open highway...and it was all legal.As children, my brother and I would lay on the backseat and sleep during long car trips.Sometimes in summer we'd have our sneakered feet against those little car windows that opened outward.Any baby seats were flimsy, like a flat square plywood wafer with thin padding of batting and vinyl covering, the backrest and seat both.The backrest folded over the seat like a book,when unused.

      I wondered what happened to Gary, too. In the 3rd episode of the 5th season, they mentioned he moved to Chicago. I researched what really happened to Ron Silver. Although I couldn't find anything definite, best I can figure is he left "Rhoda" to co-star in a crime drama named "Dear Detective". Unfortunately, it was canceled after about 4 episodes. Then, again, I could be wrong. LOL

    Just random thoughts: 1. Why would someone steal food on a subway and not steal someone's purse 2. Why didn't everyone just go to Ida's house for dinner so she wouldn't have to schlep all the way downtown to her apartment in the first place. 3. Why didn't they call to get directions or to see the hours of the restaurant ahead of time (they had 411 in the 70s) 4. Why did it only rain near the camera, the last one was kinda a joke because I know they really didn't have the technology then. The actors were not even wet when they went to the hotel at the end.

    Even in the '70s (when I was a child) I was sick of the '70s cliche of everything having to be 'spontaneous.' Anything planned or organized was automatically dull, boring, and unenjoyable. Only rushing in with no idea what the hell you were doing, no time to think, prepare mentally or emotionally, make a commitment, etc. would be 'fun.'
    And then in pretty much every TV show you ever saw where it all hinges on someone insisting that 'we should just be spontaneous,' something annoying happens and someone is blamed either for insisting on things being spontaneous or being too uptight to make 'spontaneous' work.
    Spontaneous is good in fight-or-flight situations. Not so good when people are hungry, tired, work needs to be done, you have commitments and duties, you need to think about your budges, people's feelings need to be considered, people's permission needs to be asked, people need to work together and cooperate - well, pretty much anything worth doing well.
    Imagine a 'spontaneous' army or spontaneously deciding, 'I know what will be fun! I'll do brain surgery on you!' or spontaneously getting married. Nothing that means anything or has lasting consequences ever is better because it's done spontaneously. And most the trivial 'fun' things we do spontaneously end up coming with costs that we would not have paid if we had acted prudently, with planning.
    Thank goodness at least one of the stupid 'lessons' of the '70s has faded and isn't constantly being harped on. (Now if only mindless appeals to 'diversity' as the highest value would go away.)

      You must be a complete joy to be around at parties.

    • @RepentfollowJesus
      @RepentfollowJesus Рік тому

      It wasn't brain surgery. Nobody was hurt. Spontaneous was wonderful!! We were much more relaxed. I took a trip from Texas to California via the grand canyon and the guy was so scheduled I had exactly 7 minutes to browse a souvenir store. I went over my time and he came back twice very uptight and almost mad that I took another 5 minutes. It was maddening. Is your name Russ? Spontaneous is wonderful. You can still call to make sure a place is open and get directions but just suddenly decide to go.to an out of the way place. You dont need 2 weeks to plan. When things are planned too much they never work out. Thats why hubby and I used to just say hey! Let's jump.on the motorcycle and go to eureka springs Arkansas for the weekend. We would feed the animals inside a big bowl of food and a couple big bowls of water , ask the neighbor if he would feed the outside animals and pay him for it. Grab some clothes, throw on a ' do rag and sunglasses and take off. It was a blast! Among other spontanious things we did. Now we are older and hurt too much to take trips. But we have great memories.

    This may be strange but I prefer to watch American and British sitcoms than see Australian actors in an Australian production. Aussies are not very good at making sitcoms or good quality TV series. Also, Aussie humour is quite different and it doesn't translate well onto the screen.
