If doctor's knew anything about bacteria in 1881, Garfield would have survived his wound.

One of our underrated Presidents who could have survived his wounds if it wasn't for the ignorance & incompetence of his doctors. He pushed for civil service reform & civil rights. He could also write Latin with one hand & Greek with the other.

FInally somewhere to tell this story! So it's early 1980s. I had family at Lakeview and once while visiting I went to the Garfield Monument. I had been told by coworkers that CPD officers would bring rookies to the monument and the old guy attending the place would open up Mrs Garfields coffin for them, ostensibly to let them see what a dead body looks like after so long. I went with a friend and there WAS a guy there (he was ancient, really tall and scary looking) that had you sign the guest book. I mentioned that I had never been there but somehow finagled into the conversation that I was related to law enforcement who often came there for lunch. He immediately asked, "Do you want me to open Mrs Garfields coffin.". I was dumbfounded and said NO, NO IM GOOD. He pointed to the steps, we went down alone and through the bars you could see the dust covering Mrs Garfields coffin: and handprints from where it had been opened and shut on more than one occasion. Never went back. Told the office people on the way out, and they told me I surely misunderstood him. Uh huh. at least they admitted he was a person, I was beginning to think he was paranormal

Very odd for him to be out in the open. I wouldn’t have known that if it wasn’t for this video so thanks.

I like this kind of crypt, because the casket is shown out in the open so people can see it in person.

My guess is the flag draped casket contains the body of President Garfield.

The flag-draped casket is the President's. Also, according to protocol, the field of blue on the flag rests over the left shoulder. Thus, Garfield's head and shoulders are at that end of the casket.

Y do they leave the caskets like that...what about the smell ..can someone explain so I can understand

There is no smell because he's long been decomposed 150 years ago...plus the casket is soldered shut....and why? Who knows probably was put like that in his will but it's not as uncommon as you may think.
