Great story! And a wonderful history lesson as well. I had never heard of Joc O Sot, or his story. Sad story, and it makes me even sadder that his last wishes were not honored. He gave respect, but was never granted it. Fun fact, back in the our Day , (1971-1975), when I was in high school, Ohio History was a requirement, and my favorite class. I don’t know if it’s still a requirement or not. Then, it was as important as Government class was. Keep up the good work!

I was friends for years with a member of the Mesquakie nation. Because I read tarot cards and taught classes on psychic skills, he bestowed the name of Sees Far Woman to me. I was honored that he came to me for readings and he taught me Native American culture. This was a very interesting and maddening story

Had had not heard his name as other than Walking Bear. True stories of what happened to Native Americans breaks my heart.
True tribes warred against each other. What was worse was the political and military attitudes of those in power. What can we get from them? What do we promise them with our fingers crossed behind our backs?
In the areas that his tribe lived in were also many French Canadian trappers. They too were finally attacked by the US for not wanting to become Americans. Many refused, like my ancestors who called Quebec home. They too fled across the Mississippi to the west side. A lot of my grandfathers and uncles had native wives.
It's so sad that Chief Joc O Sot was not sent back to his people, and disrespectful that his body was stolen.
It is good to hear more about his life in your respectful and accurate way of informing us of past history.
