in maya 2022 I seem to be unable to actually use interactive playback and move the boxes around to change the cloth (it does not update the constraints), any suggestions? :(

Hi, I had the same issue, solved it by disabling cached playback by right clicking on the timeline

You can just duplicate the mesh to make a frozen version of the ncloth mesh.

I am really struggling on how you did the point to surface constraint. You somehow select an object and verts and I cant for the life of me figure out how

I think it's the Shift key + mClick

Don't know if you figured this out but for anyone else who is wondering you have to hold right click and go into vertex selection mode, once you have selected the verts that way you can shift click the box and point to surface should work.
