Are the stars painted after carving ? Or are they natural wood colored ?
Painted, they look odd if left wood colored. I don't paint the entire star. I leave the outside edge of each star, wood colored. Adds to the "rustic" look

What are the colors of semi transparent stain did you use?
All minwax water based. White, barn red, and marine blue
