    The boomers were the first generation to grow up with the nuclear threat. I was a born in 1947. We saw Russia as the most likely country to use "the bomb." We saw Khrushchev pound his shoe on the table and shout, "We will bury you." We were generationally close to Hitlerian horrors and Chinese and Russian imperialism. Many of us lost family members to authoritarian dictatorships. I think maybe succeeding generations have become "comfortable numb," as the song says. Or maybe as Frank Zappa ironically sang, "It can't happen here." All of us need to wake up. It can happen here.

    • @V45194
      @V45194 2 місяці тому

      Indeed, it really can. The ultimate irony is that the people who get excited about "strong leaders" like Putin are also typically the first to complain about "fascism" because someone asked them to wear a mask during a global pandemic or didn't find their racist joke particularly funny.

    • @nicholassmith7984
      @nicholassmith7984 2 місяці тому

      Yet it's the "boomers" that are fueling the authoritarian movement. They sowed the seeds for this. They vote for right-wing representatives. They deny younger people a say in their own future.

    • @chezmoi42
      @chezmoi42 2 місяці тому

      Yes. It _IS_ happening here. And it's not the first time. I hope it doesn't take sending another generation off into a senseless world war to shake these people into action against authoritarians.

    • @steveaustin2686
      @steveaustin2686 2 місяці тому

      I don't think it is the succeeding generations as much as the boomers have followed the GOP Sedition Caucus into RWNJ authoritarian madness. The GOP still skews to older supporters than the Dems. And the GOP Sedition Caucus has left sane republicans like myself behind in their march into madness.

      We need to wake up to the reality that it *_is_* happening here! To use the slow-cooked frog analogy, people need to pay attention to how hot the water has become, not how slowly the temperature rose. Go listen to Frank Zappa interviews in which he talks politics.

      I see your point (especially considering C. Thomas). Now when it comes to the two big pending cases, the SC really had to take them for consideration. A final ruling has to be issued on Presidential Immunity and ballot qualification.
      But conveniently for dt this just facilitates his stall tactic ploy. If the SC drags this out for months and months, there's your bias.

      The far right not only in America but in the entire West has gone mad, and not just because of Putin's psy-ops. They've let their fear and resentment of ethnic & religious diversity and distorted perceptions of what "feminism" and "globalism" mean drive them into the arms of absolute evil. Yet they've deluded themselves into convincing each other that they're "the good guys" and it's those horrible corrupt liberal woke groomer pervert leftists who are causing harm and societal breakdown.
      It's a death cult mentality with the Trump/MAGA fools, and I suspect it will burn out spectacularly over the next few years as Trump declines/dies, because cults rarely last much beyond the death of their leader unless there's an heir apparent lined up in advance. But in other Western nations this sickness will no doubt continue for a while, as it's more ideological and less centered around a single "charismatic" figure.

      Welcome to the party! You're probably late, but you're still welcome to the, "This is obviously what the American Isis party is trying to do" group. The Isis party knows they can't have a Putin modeled regime, so they have to go for the next best thing that's currently *SUCCESSFUL*. That means following the Orban model. Bolsonaro was close, but he was thrown out after one term (very close, however). Orban has remained in power and LaPenne will probably never make it to the top in France as her support is largely waning. If the Isis party follows Orban's model, it's at least a very big step in solidifying their relevance as a party for a few more decades as they haven't won a popular but once in 32 years or so. If you think of a road-map of how to stay in power (or at least have as much political influence over policy) with a failed message/platform, then you have to play the long game of delaying the irrelevance and potential downfall of your platform for as long as possible. Once you begin to think of it in that prism, you realize that's essentially what they're trying to do: keep inserting themselves into the 3 branches of government to where the ideological concept is validated and difficult to contest, or at least won't be overturned for a decade or two, then it's on to the next infection of a different branch of government. Even if the policies are wholly illegal, the contestation of the policy through legal means may take a few years, which means that judges can still abide by it depending upon how rebellious they are, and everything just drags on. They're literally the drunken unruly guest at a party that doesn't know when to leave. That's basically how they're playing it.

    A group of roommates share a house. The one house rule: no shoes inside. The housemates don’t want mud tracked in or the flooring to get scuffed, they want to get their deposit back.
    The Republican Party is the housemate that not only insists on wearing their boots inside, they will stomp around outside first picking up as much mud and gravel as possible, then walk into other’s bedrooms out of spite, and prop their feet up on the dining room table to make sure everyone sees their footwear.
    The main “house rule” in the U.S. is democracy. Republicans conflate and attempt to claim that being a constitutional republic somehow obviates that, ignoring the fact that democracy is a system of government while a constitutional republic is a structure of state and has nothing to do with governing other than establishing that the federal is above the individual state.

      Politics these days is not so much about serving the people but your corporate masters, and at that Trump excels with honours. He has brought the already low standards we had for politicians honesty and ethical behaviour all the way down to the basement, nothing is a scandal anymore (that will be his sad legacy), we are not even sure if he will be charged for a crime and he is still a candidate! He is no mastermind of course but I think he was at the right time and at the right place to feed of the anger of the radical conservatives, and it is still amazing to see how far he has come and how unlikely it is that he will face any real consequences for all he has done.

    Speaking of the process of this alleged *"democracy"* where *_"all_** of us* come together across our lines of difference and choose, collectively, what we do", fun fact, five swing states determine the outcome of the presidential elections. Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have a bit more than 14% of the US population and a bit more than 20% of the registered voters and they alone matter. The rest of you might as well be Canadian. Trump was "elected" in 2016 by a majority of 23,000 voters in Wisconsin. *Over two hundred thousand Wisconsin voters were blocked from the polls* that year, on very spurious grounds, to say the least.

      Yes, agism is bad. But, there are age restriction in a number of occupations -- commercial pilots, law enforcement, firefighters, others. Would you get on an airplane with Biden or Trump (if they were trained) if they were the pilot? How about either one responding to a fire at your home? We're talking about a position with lots more stress, challenges that require sharp mental acuity, strong decision making abilities, & quick thinking -- neither excel at these skills due to an aging brain. They're both too old to be president -- not agism.

    "The GOP would like Putin'$ help in the 2024 election" alludes to the notion that Putins' help in the elections from 2020 and 2016 ever stopped. It did not, infact Putin finances TRUMP AND MAGA as if there is any question as to why their politics are maligned, and not in the interests of Americans and America.
