The final scene was for me one of the most haunting endings to an episode of Black Mirror in quite some time. The fact that the once-empty pub was now aflush with various tourists, while Davis himself is left alone and traumatised does such a fantastic job at getting the episode's point across. The people in the pub wearing recreations of Janet's mask remind me of those people who dressed up as Jeffrey Dahmer for Halloween last year, and really emphasises how the industry reduces real trauma and horror into content and entertainment for the masses

i also noticed the shape of the trophy, how they were discussing getting an actor to play pia right next to him and how soulless his eyes looked. being constantly surrounded by how his girlfriend and mom died in the same night. at the end where his mom left the note and you can see how he still felt sad and upset he felt about his mothers death- the fact she cared and left the tapes instead of overriding it because she cared about her son. him noticing this, followed by anger about what she did and how pia died. it's bittersweet grief.

I didn't get the impression that Davis had more "nefarious" intentions with the documentary at all. I thought it was pretty clear that Pia pressured/manipulated him into going along with it. That really sold me on his loneliness at the end. He's dissociating, disconnected, and still processing all that trauma. It's subtle and powerful. Honestly I thought Loch Henry was the best one of the season.

The shot of the mum writing her suicide note began “fo”, I automatically assumed would be “forgive me”. Instead it was “for your film”. She didn’t regret what she did, she wanted her son to live in success after her evil acts. She wanted people to have pleasure in torture and murder like she did, people celebrated the documentary won an award, they celebrated her acts. She won.

I interpreted the Bergerac stuff differently. Like I don't remember them (his mum and dad) overwriting any actual episodes, it seems they had them catalogued as a legit series recording, and then after the episode they would use that tape for their snuff films. That way if anyone ever checked out the tapes they would find an actual episode in it's entirety, and never realise that if you left it playing you would find a dark predecessor to Marvel's post credit scenes. I felt this also played into the themes of 'hidden in plain sight' and mask wearing (Bergerac being a mask for what the tape was truly hiding).

Most black mirror episodes are a great rewatch, but this one for me was especially so. It's like white bear, rewatching it with the twist in mind adds a new colour to the episode. His mother is upset that Ian took a bigger risk and started spilling secrets. ect ect

A fun little tidbit is that the actress playing Davis' mother was also in ITV's drama 'Appropriate Adult' as real life serial killer Rosemary West. I didn't realise until I watched it after Loch Henry - chills!

Great video. Fun fact about this episode: Janet’s son’s name is Davis McCardle (in Loch Henry), which is from the movie 12 angry men (1957). ‘Davis’ was the last name of Fonda’s character in the movie (the only man on the jury who originally voted not guilty). ‘McCardle’ was the last name of the older man on the jury who respected Fonda’s courage and was the second to vote not guilty. I’m probably not the first person to notice this but I thought it was really cool

I legit thought they were going to reveal that Henry was Iain Adair’s son. They look so similar; more similar than Henry does to his real dad or his mom. Figured it would be some kind of affair murder suicide thing where that brings new meaning to the mother’s initial rage upon being reminded of the shooting.

When the BAFTA trophy is being held during the red carpet photograph scene, the reflection of the carpet turns the award into a red mask for a few seconds. Do you think that this could be intentional or something that jumped out at me because I am from Canada and saw it as a mask first instead of an award statue (like most people in the UK would see it as)? @@remc0s That's because Charlie Brooker wanted to make something new with the season and have a couple of episodes reflect a potential spin-off known as "red mirror". I think there's a fair chance he knew. When he introduces his mother to his girlfriend, she says "Pretty little thing you've captured!" mischievously, and he tells her stop.
I also think back on the award show, when he's holding a mask of his own, albeit reluctantly.
But of course there are videos out in the open that he easily could have gone through, if they were out when he lived in the house.
The suicide note was made to appear as if it were an apology, starting out with "For..." but wasn't at all, in the end. Could just be the shamelessness of the mother, or knowing that it wasn't a surprise for the son.
On the other hand, he may have frowned at his mom for her capture joke because of the town's history, he probably wouldn't have intentionally used a snuff film VHS tape to record over, and him being innocent in the whole situation, and losing everything in exchange for the material gain is pretty tragic, and is in-line with his tears in the end.
I started out thinking he knew about his parents' history, but the counter-arguments came to mind as I typed... Idunno.

I feel like the vilification of watching true crime content sort of ignores the fact that it's an answer to childhood fear. When I was a kid DNA was a joke, they mostly just checked blood types and put that stuff in bags for years to come. Maybe it's just me, but I watch 30 year old content to go, "That's right, dumb@ss, DNA doesn't lie, no one gets away with it forever." It feels satisfying to me after growing up in the early 80s and serial killer/satanic panic. We just lived knowing some people were monsters and could get away with it.
True crime is the opposite of that and I obviously can't speak to anyone else's experience, but for me it's never about absorbing crime. I knew about the crimes. The crimes are on the news, in the headlines, they're terrifying and vague. The true crime content demystifies what we already know exists.

    • @nbucwa6621

I can’t judge though I watch plenty of true crime not with the intention of exploiting victims, but to see criminals brought to justice and how they are caught. Probably why I also like to watch trials to see people convicted of their crimes.

The whole cover up was slightly confusing to me. Why did the cop dad call for backup knowing what they would find in the basement? Why did Ian shoot the dad at all for a "cover up"? Why didn't the dad do the check up (not actually) and then leave his accomplice alone. Why did Ian shoot his parents and himself? Like if he doesn't double homicide-suicide then the dad doesn't call for backup period. But he shoots the dad before he commits these murders. So if no one was on the trail what was the point?

Black Mirror has always been a good popcorn watch, but it fails miserably at any form of commentary, at least in the way it's meant to be commentary. Entire History of You, Shut Up and Dance, and White Bear are actually rather good commentaries on how toxic British culture is. At any rate, if the show's going to go more this direction it's probably for the best.

While 'Loch Henry' is an entertaining film on its own, I was surprised that the episode did not seem to fit the typical Black Mirror theme. The series is known for exploring the dark side of technology, yet this story did not focus on technology. I'm left wondering why the creators included such an anomalous episode within the Black Mirror anthology. Perhaps there is a deeper meaning or commentary that I am missing. I'm open to hearing other perspectives that could help me better appreciate how 'Loch Henry' relates to the broader series. Reworking stories to align with audience expectations is a challenge for any showrunner. In the end, expanding creative boundaries can be rewarding, even if some viewers are initially puzzled.

I really enjoyed the Loch Henry story as a solid pulp crime mystery, shocking and surprising at every turn with very investible characters. It can be enjoyed fully enough as that alone, without all the meta analysis that comes after. However I admired how it pulled together old 80's VHS recordings with 2020's digital streaming, and the whole theme of dragging the past into the present and the effects of that. It says a lot about the morbid human fascination for the worst of our nature.
