A lot of people have been complaining about spoilers, so let me clear some stuff up.
    1) There is a spoiler warning at 0:46
    2) This isn't a 'you should watch Inside No.9' video. It's a comparison between Black Mirror and Inside No.9 with the assumption that the viewer is aware of Inside No.9 or is okay with spoilers because they're necessary.
    3) P.E.E. That stands for Point, Evidence, Explanation. It's basic essay writing 101. You have to use evidence to back up your point. I couldn't just say 'hey Inside No.9 is better than Black Mirror but I can't tell you why.' In order to argue my point, I had to use spoilers from Inside No.9 to detail and explain my points. It's necessary for the video.
So TL;DR, if you're annoyed about spoilers, you had a warning and the spoilers were a requirement for the video.

My only arguement is that I missed the spoiler warning because you didn't say anything about it, it was only a visual warning. I turned off in time before much was spoiled and I can't even really remember what was spoiled. A quick 'hey guys, spoilers ahead' would probably have sorted it all out.
Can't argue with your other points they make sense.

An audio cue for the spoiler warning would have really helped, I think :/ A lot of people just listen to commentary episodes similar to this & I would have missed it if I hadn’t been looking in the comments while I watched the video. Especially since the second show you’re talking about isn’t mentioned in the titles, so there’s no way for people to know that they need to have watched that show before watching this to not get spoiled. No hate, just some stuff that might help in the future!

    • @lejuanca
      @lejuanca 4 роки тому +24

I feel like it should at least be more clear in the title that this is a video comparing the two. As it is now, the title is implying "Black Mirror isn't good anymore, but watch this video to find out about a lesser known show that easily picks up their slack!" I was excited to dive into this video, but finding out that there would be major spoilers for this sudden new show two minutes in and having to turn it off was just kind of a bummer for me. And I'll just be honest with myself here; I already know I'll never feel bothered to seek this show out on my own terms, especially since I turned off the video before even learning anything about it. If you really meant for the target audience of this video to be fans of both shows (not to mention that current Inside No. 9 fans have no way to know that this video is about Inside No. 9), then you should really fix the title to reflect that. just my opinion tho

Yeah. lol. I just paused the video, because I didn't realize you'd be going through deep comparisons for the other show- I thought it was more like, "Look at how black mirror failed (example example example), Check out this other show! .. Bye!... But I didn't realized you'd go into the other show too- I'll check it out on my own and come back later, lol.

I feel like it suffered from budget bloat. when it was a small show on channel 4 it had to be smart about making a story that was believable and interesting to draw in viewers. it was about characters. Once it got big enough though and moved over the netflix, I think it kind of approached stories with the idea that 'we can do whatever we like' now, and so they started wasting their budget on getting big name actors and sets, so the episodes became more about the setting than the people in it. it became about the spectacle of 'look at this weird technology' rather than 'look at how human beings exist in this world'

Also if you start a series where every episode has to talk about some bad aspect that technology have or might have in the future, you will be out of topics in some point.
Notice how in the last season Miley Cirus episode was more about how huge celebs grown up to that world gets used and only reason for some tech was to get the fan to help her idol. It was used as a tool for the story not as a theme. The fighting game sex episode had the same exact thing, it was more about our identity and how complex it really is and tech was there was just as a tool to show that theme. The kidnapping one, I don't think there is much to talk about since the reveal is not even worth it...

@Lefter Mc yes, the first two seasons (6 episodes total) are a bit older and were fairly obscure (at least in my country, which isn't England, very few people knew about this show, I myself discovered it when it had already ended a few years prior)
If you look it up, you can see there's a fairly long time gap between those and the subsequent seasons, which were longer and done when the show was acquired by Netflix
I'm not an elitist so I was over the moon when Netflix put it on its catalogue since I'd been recommending the show for YEARS at that point and it was fairly difficult to come by, but when they ordered new episodes I had a bad feeling about it all... IMO I was right and I'm so sad about it

But the first episode the train episode is a hard pass. I can usually stomach a lot more unnerving things but that episode hit a bad combo of being clostrophobic and repetitive. I get that's kind of the point but it's just not my thing. For some reason after that train episode I'm having a hard time finding the urge to watch the rest. You've missed the point of Arkangel; it's an episode more about overprotecting children from things that might "harm" them and the consequences (pretty cleverly shown too) rather than technology turning a mother into a helicopter parent... it's the one instance where she lost sight of her daughter for a minute that sparked this overprotection, and the technology enabling it, not the reverse.
And the episode ends with the extremely telling image of what any mother dreads most: her daughter hitchhiking a random truck on the road, which is kind of a perfect way to conclude the commentary: if your overprotect your children and try to control their whole life, it will blow in your face and you'll get just desserts for your neuroses.
The planting and pay-off in this particular episode was masterfully done and the commentary on technology was spot-on (I always go back again and again to the subtle plot detail of the Arkangel technology being a Trojan horse for selling supplements and drugs; it's more of a commentary on capitalism than technology really: spark the neurosis within the parent with the monitoring technology, then sell them your "complementary" product which is the real hook... it's absolutely brilliant and it's also used later as a plot point when the mother laces the supplements, which she still makes the daughter drink, with the abortion pill... utterly neat planting and pay-off, you can't overlook that)
Maybe you haven't lived with an overbearing parent but I can tell you that this episode is one of the absolute best written of the show; the psychology is absolutely spot-on, Jodie Foster did a great job directing it and yeah, the mother is kind of the unambiguous villain in this one but she also got played by corporate greed (again, rather than "technology=bad", honestly how did you come to this conclusion??) and I'm okay with Brooker passing actual judgement on people being assholes from time to time.

@@mauchkimberly Same. He's not saying anything many detractors from Netflix-era BM haven't already said and it's telling that he has to parrot the same surface-level thoughts. I haven't gotten to the Inside No. 9 portion of the video yet but I wouldn't be surprised if it's just him going "12 DAYZ OV CHRISTINE DUURRRR". I'm just so tired of people going out of their way to misrepresent what Black Mirror is about.
EDIT: Having seen the Inside No. 9 bit, I take back what I said about what he would have to say about that. Still though, the comparison to Black Mirror seems rather misguided. They're both genre mash-up anthologies, but that's where similarities end. Black Mirror is social commentary first and foremost. Take that out and whatever is left is not Black Mirror. To ignore that in favour of comparing it to another anthology show (a very good one, might I add) is like comparing a pop-rock band to a death metal band because they use the same instruments. Again, for someone who complains about the so-called "surface-levelness" of current Black Mirror, his idea of what the show is is very surface level.

Okay so hot take: I don't like Nosedive very much. I feel like the main character was just making such silly, obviously poor decisions that it was hard for me to feel like that world was actually as bad as I know it must be. Cognitively, I can understand why a world run solely by popularity as a currency sucks (and reflects our world), but I think I'd actually *feel* it more if the main character theoretically did everything right, but something minor that she couldn't really control ruined her reputation. As it is now, it's like the main character did so many things ridiculously wrong that I have trouble connecting with her. Or they could've given her a reason to be so bad at decision-making, so I would empathize a bit more. I get why a lot of people like it--just thought I'd share!

It criticizes modern society on so many levels so profoundly yet emotionally that it still has the effect it had when I first watched it. More emotional and less metaphorical, but feels alot like Kafka, in a good way of course. Acting is superb too. I knew the protagonist would make a breakthrough immediately when I saw him break down on the stage. But the ending, the ending is what always gets me and it's pure Black Mirror: Shows the moral ambiguity of the main character, leaves you feeling like shit and further demonstrates the capacity of this machinistic society to use counter-culture as a way to further it's goals even further (which is probably inspired by critical theory because it's so spot on). And then you are shown a beautiful forest to remind you that we could have something akin to paradise, but we choose to live in a monstrosity that chews people up and uses them as capital, because we don't know better and/or feel hopeless, and because those in power don't want us to know and want us feeling hopeless.

Inside No. 9 is MY VERY FAVORITE SHOW. Shearsmith and Pemberton are so incredible. They do everything so well and intelligently. Plus it's so simplistic in its structure, but the concepts and writing are so deep. Misdirection really helps make it so outstanding. Plus the episodes are only a half hour long. Its just sad that the seasons only come out once a year and they're only 6 episodes per season. I got BritBox just so I could watch it.
I used to love Black Mirror, but the endings got predictable. I also love tragedies and unhappy endings. But a lot of their endings became resolved. Thats why Shut Up and Dance was one of my favorite episodes. But for me, Inside No. 9 doesn't compare. Its so much more.

So I can’t watch that video without trying to go there emotionally. (And no before anyone tries to go there I don’t mean I sit there and imagine doing that to a pig) Even if I’m really just empathizing with the actor who had to empathize enough with the character to make it seem convincing. Still a very, VERY disturbing episode to endure

@ because I’ve met PLENTY of people in my life who do not empathize with fictional characters AT ALL. It doesn’t make them psychotic or sociopaths. They just don’t have any emotional connection to characters that aren’t real people. They can watch a torture scene and their only thought is “sucks to be that guy right now.” Whereas my brain can’t help but actually imagine what it feels like to suffer every single pain and humiliation along the way to the extent I’m haunted by it for several days after initially viewing. Theon Greyjoy from GoT and Griffith from Berserk are two great examples of tortures that are so extreme that it’s easy for a lot of people (arguably more than 5%) to distance themselves mentally and emotionally from said suffering. Apparently not everyone has quite as severe of a reaction to non existent characters, hence my original comment. I WISH I could be like some of these people I know who don’t internalize every bit of suffering (be it real OR fictional) that they see or hear about.
That’s why I said what I said. Never said I’m special or tried to imply that I’m part of a rare breed. Only pointing out that I’m not like several people I’ve met in my past. Because in my experience that number isn’t accurately represented by a mere 5%. Otherwise I would probably agree it wasn’t worth saying at all.
is that... is that the right answer??

@@Memnoch_the_Devil It's a fair one. To keep the ball rolling on it, I've known women who can't identify with male characters, one of my white relatives can't identify with Asians in movies, and I've known quite a few who can't identify with an animated character, whereas I found Grave of the Fireflies virtually unbearable and can even identify with Daffy Duck. And there are plenty of people who can't identify with things on a larger scale, by which I mean in terms of a whole story. For instance, if it doesn't have a happy ending, many many people will say a movie or TV show isn't any good. And some people cannot handle anti-heroes or simply people who make mistakes, or choose different life choices than the ones the viewer would make. An example of the latter is that I watched Nomadland with my mother, who disapproved of the main character's life choices and so wound up disliking her and even the movie as a whole. No amount of explaining to her that you weren't necessarily supposed to feel the main character's choices were either ideal or particularly ideal for YOU. She simply could not identify with someone who made choices she did not approve of.

The “basement-dwelling fanboys ruin everything” narrative came across as decidedly one-sided, especially in light of fan backlash against recent franchise evolutions. Also, the homage to Star Trek stuff was done much better by Galaxy Quest in my opinion, where it was clear the writers actually were fans of Trek instead of just aware of it.

And that was before I watched any Star Trek, after watching Star Trek I realised the writers have no idea what Star Trek is actually like, they just took the outside perception of the show without actually trying to learn what it was actually like. @@maudeparadinight8848 - It kind of came off like you were saying that people would only stop liking Black Mirror because they weren't smart enough to "get" it or something. Either way, I will absolutely advertise Inside No 9 to you.
Inside No 9 is an excellent show that's both consistently better than Black Mirror, and just a more enjoyable experience in its own right because of its values. It's written by people who know how to present well-drawn engaging characters in a very short space of time, and who know that liking characters is crucial to making a story worth watching. I think that's something Charlie Brooker never really understood, and certainly never mastered.
I'd also say that this video overstates the importance of the twists in the show. Yes, they're almost always there in abundance, but I can't think of any episode that relied so heavily on the twist to the point that it's not enjoyable to rewatch. There's always some good black comedy and some interesting ideas at the heart of it.
Also... you don't actually have to stop watching Black Mirror to watch Inside No 9. You should, but you don't have to. ;-)

Classic xmas fare for me every year since it came out.

I remember last year I watched a video on inside number 9 after being extremely disappointed with black mirrors recent episodes and how they just stopped making me think and instead were just thoughtless episodes for me. after watching the first episode of inside no. 9 I was definitely impressed with the way that they take 20-30 minutes to display creative concepts and address social issues. the creators of the show made me feel like I was watching this gold mine with tiny easter eggs hidden everywhere for me to find. I started to really enjoy trying to figure out the endings of episodes and I even got my sisters hooked on the show. it's not solely about technology or futuristic ideas that go terribly wrong, its a different topic every time and it's genuinely entertaining. if you haven't watched it already I definitely think its worth it and the episodes mentioned in this video are great. 12 days of Christine is a great place to start but sardines (the first episode) is also a great way to get sucked into the show.

I love both shows. I watched Black Mirror since series 1 and only got into Inside no.9 in late 2017 and while I still love Black Mirror I now prefer Inside No 9 . I think it is important to note that Inside no .9 is the product of a writing partnership in Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith. This means they both bring ideas to the show whearas Charlie Brooker writes the majority of Black Mirror which brings a lot of pressure. Pemberton and Shearsmith also work with a small dedicated team of people they have worked with for years such as Adam Tandy , Jon Plowman, Christian Henson who soundtracks and Yves Barre (costumes) and a small group of directors such as Guillem Morales and David Kerr which helps keep the show consistent. Black Mirror may have got a large budget and audience since going to Netflix but both of these bring pressures.

So the show peaked early and it's imperfect. I don't understand how these 2 facts would ruin the show for anyone, as no series is perfect - even Inside No. 9
This may seem ridiculous to some, but BM Season 1 seems like the prototype. EP 1 and 2 are inferior to most other episodes in the entire series. EP 3 is really the only one that resonated. Of course, every episode will affect people differently, and that's what makes the show so awesome. Season 2 is probably the best, yes, with White Bear and my GOD White Christmas is incredible. I don't need to be blown away by some twist, I just need good storytelling, and that's pretty much why my favorite episode is White Christmas. Season 3 is also extremely good and simply expanded the A tier catalog with Playtest (maybe an unpopular opinion) and Shut Up and Dance which is arguably in the top 3 or 4. Hated in the Nation seems to be overlooked, maybe because it's so long or because there's less emphasis on the emotions of the characters. Season 4 has Arkangel which stays true to the show's original story-type, Crocodile which I honestly don't dislike one bit, Hang the DJ which is seriously interesting. Didn't know John Shelby was into dating apps. Metalhead is awful, though, and Black Museum seems to mimic White Christmas a little. Either way, that EP is still pretty alright. While Season 5 was disappointing, Smithereens was genuinely thrilling and shows the hypothetical situation of someone consumed by grief that takes drastic and life-ending measures to attempt to just feel ok again.
Alright, I'm done now but I really think Black Mirror has been overly criticized since Season 2 was SO good that it created false expectations.

I never liked “White Bear”. It was far too unrealistic for me, even if it was a social commentary or whatever. Logically, if a person cannot remember the crime they did, they can’t be punished for it. People in the world of “White Bear” would realize this, and, if it’s a more absurd, parodical world, then it’s too much of a departure from the rest of the series.
Edit: just like how “Arkangel” is a low-effort rehash of “The Entire History of You”, “Nosedive” is a low-effort rehash of “Fifteen Million Merits”. The rehashing begins with the show’s acquisition by Netflix.
Additionally, you can see the difference in the point of the episodes in just their titles. “Arkangel” is named after the tech, while “The Entire History of You” is named after the effects of the tech.

I don't like White Bear much myself either, but I think you're kind of missing the point. Victoria filmed her boyfriend torturing a little helpless girl (who had no idea what was happening to her) to death. That's what the spectators and the people running the "theme park" are doing to her. The main point isn't to punish her for her crime or make her face up to it, it's so they can amuse themselves.

  • @levischorpioen

Black Mirror is at its core about human relationships. It’s about how we as a society are distracted by external things created to enhance the human experience, when in actuality all it does is disconnecting us from ourselves and each other. Whether it’s the hype surrounding a politician doing disgusting things with an animal distracting us from a human life being in danger, or a society surrounding an app that makes us decide how to treat one another instead of our own morals.
Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too is this concept blown up thousandfold, and the scary thing is that it’s perhaps one of the most realistic episodes to date. The music industry is a cesspool of arrogant producers, record label execs and promoters eating away at the artist’s humanity and personal integrity until all that remains is a soulless product. The spectacle of an artist with a huge show production, or an toy that is a digital copy of said artist, or a Kaiju-sized hologram...all of that will always weigh more to the industry than that young girl sitting at her piano writing a soft, heartfelt ballad. We see Ashley desperately trying to remain human, stashing away narcotics and ending up in a small venue with real instruments, real friends and an audience that is there because they genuinely like the person behind the corporate mask. She’s free from having her humanity taken away by software that can take brainwaves and interpret lyrics (only to change everything about it anyway, leaving Ashley completely out of control, ripping away her true feelings). She’s free from being a product. She can now be what she always wanted to be: a true artist.
Rachel was the personification of someone distracted by the spectacle, the fame and the hype, and when the curtain dropped, all she had was her own identity. Jack kept her identity, listening to lesser-known artists and following her heart. This episode, like any good Black Mirror episode, is about being distracted by things designed to heighten the human experience so much that humanity itself is sacrificed. It’s not very much unlike the other 2 episodes in its season, and indeed like so many Black Mirror episodes before (USS Callister, Shut Up And Dance, Nosedive, Be Right Back, Fifteen Million Merits...). It is a perfect representation of what Black Mirror stands for and my favorite episode to date.

Thank you! Good to know there are still intelligent beings out there.
