The 1991 game was originally scheduled to be in Auburn, but due to a lengthy court battle, Auburn agreed to move what was to have been an Iron Bowl at Jordan Hare to Legion Field for a one time deal. From 1992 to through the end of the 90's decade, the series would alternate with Bama hosting Auburn in Birmingham, and Auburn hosting Bama in Auburn. Beginning in 2000, Bama took a page from Auburn's book and moved their home games in the series to Tuscaloosa, hosting the game at Bryant Denny Stadium. The move was rejected by some, given that this would take the Iron Bowl out of Birmingham for good. The city of Birmingham also saw the writing on the wall as this would be the true beginning of the end of Alabama hosting any games at Legion Field. Mike Shula's first game as Alabama head coach in August 2003 was the last Bama game ever played there. Nick Saban will be the first Alabama head coach to have come and gone without ever having coached a game at Legion Field. Not unless Bama ends up in the Birmingham Bowl during his era, which is EXTREMELY unlikely. Even though it has now been over 22 years since the last time an Iron Bowl was played in Birmingham, and Bama has hosted Auburn in Tuscaloosa every other year since then, there are STILL some who don't like the series being played on the campuses of the University of Alabama and Auburn University. Granted, it does not have the same feel as it did up until 1988 when it was a "neutral site" 50/50 ticket split. And it never will, as it has become just another home game for one side or the other. But, the thing about the past is. It's THE PAST.
All well said! It was pretty cool to see Auburn in the Birmingham Bowl following the 2015 season. I thought then, though, that it would be the last time we would see either Alabama or Auburn at Legion Field. Now that the new stadium is complete on the BJCC grounds, I think the writing is on the wall for Legion Field. The only game of significance that will be played there is the Magic City Classic between Alabama State and Alabama A&M. With stadium in the condition that it's in, I imagine that it will be only a matter of time before it comes down.

Well, first of all, Bama could not tell Auburn “no, we’re never coming to your campus, even though every other SEC does”. Second of all, Auburn didn’t ask for it to be in Auburn every single year. Just every other year when it’s their home game. Plus, we also got to benefit as we were able to take the game to Tuscaloosa whenever it was our turn to host it. The two stadiums in Auburn and Tuscaloosa were improving and were MUCH nicer than Legion Filed. There was no other choice but to have the Iron Bowl be in Tuscaloosa and Auburn. And some Bama fans are still stuck in the past wanting it to be in that rundown Legion Field LOL
I was at this game in the Alabama end zone. First game ever. Probably the only GA Bulldog fan in the house that night. My cousin was a sheriff that stayed with Alabama on road games. We got field badges. What an experience

Tim Marsh Yeah, but by the time Bama played their last game at the Old Grey Lady, the east stands were dropping concrete like dandruff and the neighborhood around the stadium had gotten exponentially worse. The neighborhoods around Legion Field were never the best in Birmingham, but the residents used to respect the fans on game days, as they were a source of much needed income from yard parking, etc. That stopped in the late 90s when the gangs took over. A lot of fans got robbed and had cars broken into during that South Florida game. They pretty much had to stop playing there. It was getting dangerous.

This was gang banger territory the entire time with gun shots ringing out every second single year.. cars getting broken into left and right during the game. It didn't get worse it was the same throughout. This game should have left that hell hole before 1980 ever arrived. Bear loved the advantage and that's why they stayed because of his legacy and the unfair advantage of playing at their "home away from home" where Bama also played every Tennessee and LSU "home" game. They had no choice but to leave after Auburn showed the world what home and home was about in 1989.

Every Auburn coach hits the bricks after a loss to Bama. Pat Dye lost 17-0 to Bama in his final game as Auburn head coach. Terry Bowden lost 31-17 to Bama in his final game as Auburn head coach. Tommy Tubberville lost 36-0 to Bama in Tuscaloosa and he was gone. Gene Chizik went out on a 49-0 loss to Bama in T Town and Gus Malzahn lost to Bama 42-13 and was fired a few weeks later.
