  • From carefree and 17 to crashing with Epilepsy's blow, I unearthed the secret to overcoming adversity. My journey shows that even in the darkest times, we can transform setbacks into stepping stones toward greatness. Rowan is an advocate and athlete who is currently studying Neuroscience and Philosophy at Duke University. A member of TEAM USA for Triathlon, Ironman Finisher, and World Record Holder, Rowan has set out to prove that despite getting diagnosed with epilepsy, anything is possible. Rowan focuses on how with the right perspective adversity doesn’t inhibit your greatness, but rather can allow you to become the best version of yourself. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I was around 5 years old when I got my first epileptic seizer and now I'm 23. A medically declared lifelong epileptic patient due to my traumatic medical history. Being from a developing South Asian country epilepsy also comes with lots and lots of societal challenges. A much-needed video it was! Hats off to all the epileptics out there, you are doing great and you can do wonders!

Young as well as epileptic is a tough place to be. It's like the feeling of wanting to finish a bucket list before you lose consciousness again. Bravo on being a high-achiever. You look invincible, but everyone needs to be sure that good health is strong, not extreme. Right now, I'm not understanding why but my personality is fearless.

My seizures have changed over the years. I started my epilepsy at 27 years old with gran-mals. Today I have focal seizures but several times a week. I do feel the aura and usually able to protect myself by sitting down. I do have too many seizures and it is affecting my memory. If I am able to I am going to have brain surgery. Wish all my epileptic friends strength, hope, and success with your process of healing. 💜

Celebrate your epilepsy, let everyone know you have it so you can talk about it. I found out so many people have it when I became open about it and it gives me so many opportunities to discuss and help others.

I was diagnosed with childhood epilepsy, and suffered grand mal seizures. Now at 25, my epilepsy is resolved however I have a panic disorder now that makes me terrified of it coming back. I needed this video, because even though I'm no longer epileptic, my life is still being plagued by it.

It really can become debilitating. I think it's the unpredictability of it, for me I also remember coming out of my one and only grand mal seizure (I was then consequently diagnosed with a brain cavernoma, lesion which had started to bleed) my condition is well controlled but I have a condition now whenever I feel movements/twitches in my right arm, I panic and have basically a panic attack which mimics seizure symptoms because I'm so terrified of having another seizure and possibly not waking up. It takes its toll, most definitely and just know you're not alone. Are you able to seek help to talk about it?

I also have had seizures for 40 years. There are tons of meds and better surgical treatments these days. This young guy has lots of hope!!!!

Too true. I'm still having seizures, they started more than 40yrs ago. And it's only with this attitude of acceptance & positive determination I'm smiling & loving life. Sure heading for my 70's has me worried what's ahead, but I'm keen to enjoy the best quality of living possible.

I hope to do a TedTalk someday as an educator with epilepsy. Changing my career in midlife, I enjoy my new career, but even with brain surgery and seizure freedom, we still battle with memory loss and fatigue.

We oftentimes let our imagination send us down a dark spiral. Gratitude, fortitude, and patience are paramount.
Suffering is a part of life. What matters is how we respond to unforseen circumstances.
Be smart and if you have epilepsy, be vary cautious driving and operating heavy machinery.
    Thanks for your time.
