- Jasmine Guy starred in the Cosby Show TV spin-off A Different World that ran on NBC-TV from 1987 to 1993. Her role as the snooty, heavy-Southern-accented Whitley Gilbert was one of the highlights of the show. She also had three R&B hits, "Try Me," "Another Like My Lover," and "Just Want to Hold You." Born March 10, 1964, in Boston, MA, Guy grew up in Atlanta, GA. She was a dancer with the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe and later danced as a part of the cast of the '80s NBC-TV series Fame, which was based on the hit movie of the same name. Guy also appeared in numerous off-Broadway shows and in the Spike Lee movie School Daze with Lawrence Fishburne.
Being on a TV show that was a spin-off of a phenomenally successful, groundbreaking TV series had its benefits. Guy was afforded the opportunity to become a recording artist. Signing with Warner Bros., Guy's first single, "Try Me," was written and produced by Full Force. The ultra-sexy video of the song was heavily hyped and premiered after a segment of A Different World. "Try Me" made it to number 14 R&B in fall 1990. Her self-titled debut LP made it to number 38 R&B on Billboard's charts in late 1990.
Guy received kudos for her steely-eyed, menacing performance in the 1989 Eddie Murphy/Richard Pryor/Redd Foxx/Della Reese/Arsenio Hall movie Harlem Nights. Guy also voiced a part in the 1997 animated movie Cats Don't Dance and toured in the late '90s in Chicago the Musical with Ben Vereen.

A Different World was made for Lisa Bonet...... But Jasmine Guy owned it.
Maggie Jimenez say it again!
The show got better when Lisa left.😂
nooooooo forgotl bout that but I completely agree.
She was meant to be the true star 🌟 of Different World 🌎 tbh . ❤️🌈🌈🙏🏾. #HappyPrideMonth #JasminGuy
She was the shit back in the day. Her dancing was mind blowing, voice was great, and beautiful.
VERY UNDERRATED!!!
Yes indeed Jasmine Guy rock the heck out this song i still love playing her song😊💜💜💜
Holy crap. I totally forgot this video after all these. Jasmine could clearly dance her was off, you could tell she was a trained dancer. She was stunning. Body of a ballerina.
WOW..
Alvin Ailey, it's why I went
Her dancer techniques are amazing... I like this song. I listen to it all the time.
Never saw tha video for this song-very well done!!!!The dancing was great!!!!And Jasmine Guy was an exceptional talent.
Jasmine graces anything that she does! Til this day I don't know how her music didn't get the buzz that it deserved?! That's 1 talented woman. Real talent -- unlike today's garbage!
LADY HYDRO JEN I agree!!!
OMG I LIVE FOR THIS SONG!!!! Jasmine is the BOMB!!!! :)
Next to Jody whatly and Janet Jackson Jasmine should have been up there with them.
She could have. She sounded almost like Jody.
Boy please lol
I remember she performed this on that show Party Machine that came on after Arsenio Hall. She had great performance energy. It was higher than what's in the video actually. Vhs'ed watched it over and over again. :)
I remember party machine 😊
Holy crap. I totally forgotten this video. Jasmine was stunning and could clearly dance her butt off. Forgot she was a trained dancer. Stunning.
Jasmine Guy is such an excellent dancer.
Looking at this video makes me think that Jasmine Guy was born in the wrong time period, but then I think she was born in the right time period if only to show what kind of skill, beauty and class could be brought to the stage and screen. Thanks Ms. Guy.
I don't understand the Paula Abdul comparisons. Jasmine is a much more talented performer and I do like Paula. I wish Jasmine had delivered much more music and videos! Her dancing is fantastic.
Jaren Morris I never cared for Paula Abdul, she can dance and all but I can't sit and listen through a whole record without remixing it with J. Cole (Straight Up).
Paula Abdul was fire performance wise on video. She had the "It" factor the in her videos. Jasmine is the stonger more well rounded talent, but this was not a fire video, so she never blew up musically like PA because it was a mediocre start and as you said not a big enough catalogue. But I remember her live performance on Party Machine was as good as Paula, maybe better.
@Jaren Morris She wanted to, but she said in an interview that she ran up against a lot of resistance in the music industry and she didn't care for how they did business. Jasmine also said if she ever decided to make another album, she'd handle the whole process herself.
wow this took me back. Love the choreography in this video.
I haven't heard this song in years. Thanks for posting. She was a former Alvin Ailey dancer years ago before appeared on Different World. She still looks good even to this day.
luv da 90's sound. dis is another one of my JAMS!!!
Jasmine was really gorgeous back then and she looks very good with the short wig!
Wig? Jasmine wears her own hair.
Watch the video, she wears a short wig halfway through.
@@Rosannasfriend 👍
@@spicey6646 Even women WITH hair wear wigs.
I wonder if Debbie Allen was the choreographer on this video. Lets face it Debbie was the go to back then
Wondering same.
@@jilesnstyle I wouldn't be surprised. Jasmine and Debbie go all the way back to the 80's when they were both on Fame.
This was my cut...my freshman year in high school.
I think there are like 3 different versions of this video.... This one has the best editing for sure.
I just adore this girl. She's got this classic elegance that blows you away.
I love how the focus is on the talent and not all of this trying to be overly sexy that you see in many contemporary videos. It's naive....love it!
I really loved this song! Always thought Ms Guy might have been related to Prince! They look so alike to me!
Ms M they do!
This is what you call true talent and entertainment!!
"Another Like My Lover" (1990) Co-Written & Produced by Timmy Gatling but sounds EXACTLY like it was written & produced by LA & Babyface.
Damn, all this time I thought it was them.
@@blessedk77 I myself never thought about it till mentioned here... But it does sound like something they would've done.
Cree Summer is also singing background on this.
Another one of my favorites!!
I won't even tell you how much I used to dance to this, my mom had the casette tape and I knew every song I took this tape and her Karyn White tape man do I miss those days.
I rememeber buying the cassette when it came out. Yes, I'm old and not ashamed of it. LOL!
Britney Spears "Circus" video definitely jacked this video's theme and style...
That song was a top ten R&B hit
I auditioned for a dance spot on the Hit television show "Fame" at the same time Jasmine did at the very beginning of her career BEFORE she got famous! These were uncredited positions but you got seen and therefore taken serious in the business! We both made it however I was very young and needed one of my parents or a trusted chaperoned and couldn't get one so I didn't get to appear on the show. If you ever watch Fame with Debbie Allen teaching Dance Class and the kids she was teaching in the background?.... You'll find Jasmine guy in one of the positions. I was supposed to be at her right but..... I'm in my 50's now but will never get over not being on that show.... PS.... Jasmine was so fine and she smelled really good too! LOL!
Jasmine was the "IT GIRL" back in the day. Dancing, Acting & Singing what a talent.
Before Mya Harrison, there was Jasmine Guy. :-)
Jasmine was soo Beautiful back then!! You go girl!! Barbara Mozie 😍😀
A really great song, but I will always love Try Me!
oh this girl is so perfect, her Dance, her hair, her singing, Jasmine is all that and a bouncing beach ball !
my favorite song off her album. and i've always loved that album cover.
i dnt see how some people dnt like this, lol i love it, i think she looks beautiful in this video, reminds me of her oh so many talents, wish someone would remake this song now
This was my jam...I was in the 8th grade when this hit...this was music
I was in the 5th grade when this came 😊 when I seen this on B.E.T Video soul with Donnie Simpson.
Jasmine guy is just a beast!!!!! I live her
I haven't heard this one in a long time. Thanks for posting it.
Omg.... sooooo 90’s.... memories! Good times
I didn't really now she can sing this is my first time hearing her she sounds great and she's a great dancer
I love this whole tape. which i just happen to have in my car right now. Yes i do listen to it. awesome.
This used to be my song. She was so damn pretty.
i love those days entertainment was clean and fun
She still looks good and is doing her thing on Broadway.
Work it, Whitley!
oh i love this song here. one of my favs from her.
One of the few albums (yea... cd now) that I completely enjoyed & waited for the follow up. Still waiting Jasmine...
She needs to cut another record!! 🎤🎶🔥💯
Jasmine revealed that she planned on releasing album around the mid 2000's and she had recruited Gerald LeVert to produce it. Sadly he passed before they had the opportunity to start production
@@MUSICENCYLOPEDIA She should do one with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. I'd love to hear that result!
having danced for alvin ailey, i would say she could dance circles around paula abdul.
lets not forget people where these young actresses came from, SCHOOL DAZE from spike lee. the entire movie was acting and complete dancing. Featuring Jasmine Guy, and Tisha Campbell (Gina) from MARTIN. So these talented ladies started off dancing and singing and acting. It was wonderful seeing them really showcase that individually with there on albums. Oh Tichina Arnold (Pam) from MARTIN started with LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS.
Go Jasmine...go Jasmine!*
That was great! She acts, sings, dance, she is just very talented.
OMG!!! This was a favorite song of my childhood and all these years, I just thought that I'd mistakenly linked the girl from "A different world" to it. I remember finding her tape among my uncles things, he was a musician. I played this song non stop. And now that I think about it I'm pretty sure that I didn't lose it and that my mother took it away because she didn't think the lyrical content was appropriate for her 8 year old daughter to constantly be singing... lmbo!
I've always appreciated Jasmine Guy for sooooooo many years! She needs to make a HUGE COMEBACK! I remember the last time I saw her doing anything was her making a cameo appearance on "The Parkers." Come back to us Jasmine!!!!! LOL!!!!!!
I miss Jasmine Guy!
She's got them Jackson eyes.
im a big fan
i
I used to love this song!!!!
I love this song...
lurveeee Jasmin Guy xxx She's a Legend xx
New Jack Swing for the win!
Jasmine is an excellent dancer
I was only 9 years old and never heard this song til now.
I had forgotten about this video!!! She was such a hottie. Jasmine was also great in the show "Dead Like Me" in which she played a reaper. I miss that show.
No shade but i didnt understand why Jas was doing recordings til i heard this banga then i got it plus after hearing her album i feel she shouldve received more awards than she did wit this album but im glad she gave us a sample that will last in our hearts forever 😉💋
Classic 90's R&B
I remember this video. She can dance and sing. This was a blast from the past to watch
Thanx for posting it
she was that it girl back in the late 80's and early 90's...not too many could touch her beside janet jackson
I love this song and video and Jasmine was the DEAL, fantastic dancer.
i miss this time.
man this is gold. I just found a copy of this 12" for $1
I actually treated myself to her tape for Christmas and I played it alot.
80's and 90's music was the best
I love this song...and LADY J...Was doing her thang...I MISS THE EARLY NINETIES
Shake it, Jasmine. Awesome dancer.
Am down with this track
Triple threat. Sing, dance and act. Go JG go!!!
hey thanks for posting this. i searched jasmine on a whim. i tried to buy this cd back in the day but i couldn't find it. it sold well but she still lost her recording contract. damn shame.
I'm so getting Mya vibes right now. Like they could be sisters.
i bought this album back in high school, and then i lost it. i was in a record store here in nyc and i was looking through their bargain bin...and there she was. i play jasmine's cd whenever i get in the move.
She did really good
aww. she was so cute!
YES YES AND YES!
In this video, Jamsine Guy popping out like Paula Abdul. The choreogrpahy is similar and their style of music is the same. This is one of those songs you can dance to, the real originally hip-hop. Go Jamsine!
I never understood whey she never followed this album with more music.
my only fave by her that she ever came out with.
thank you for posting this
Thanks for informing me about Jasmine. I'll look out for the dancing competition show that she hosts. Peace!
Bought the cassette of her album after viewing this video in 6th grade lol
NOBODY was finer than Jasmine back then - NOBODY
Yep this song got alot of play on radio and it was written and produced by Timmy Gatlin, the original member of Guy. Jasmine also did the vocal arrangements on this song as well as song background vocals with Timmy.
Great song!
OMG, I'm three years old again!! Yaaaaaaaaasss!!
miss this
Jasmine can dance.
WOW WOW WOW! I never seen this side of Jasmine Guy!
My jam!
I love Jasmine Guy so much I was named after her...
This song (and Good2Go's "Never Satisfied") fooled me for a split-second! The closest LA & Babyface production sound-a-like i've ever heard!! I like it too!! I normally don't think too much of imposters but this song is the sh*t!!!!
