    Thank you AGAIN for keeping it real and providing solutions. Although I feel like you’re in the top 1% of churches. Most churches under 200 people don’t have the talent or the funding to pull off what you guys talk about. The smaller the church, the harder it is to tell someone they are not good enough without hurt feelings. I lead at my church, and might not be good enough to even sing with you guys, so the standards are very different within each church. Keep up the good work.

    I wish I had so many wishing to join the worship team that I could afford to do auditions! Alas, the troubles of a smaller church (150-200 ppl).

      Is 150-200 ppl really a small number of people. I have 40 and I still try to do auditions.

    The choir can be a great place for those who aren't ready for the praise team. Consider creating layers of your ministry such as the choir that can be a facet of your ministry that is come one come all.

    At my church, we place those who've qualified on a 4 week probation, during which they are required to attend rehearsals (without serving). This gives us an opportunity to observe their character as they interact with the other team members

    Great video, this is so important to talk about and think through before you addition anybody. I just keep telling myself it’s easier to say no before somebody is on the team then having to let them go after they join.

      I forgot to say that I think it’s very important to tell people before they auditioned that they might not make the team. Some people are under the impression that additions are just a formality; that just because they show an interest they are automatically a part of the team.

    We have a budding acoustic guitarist who is VERY shy as well as lacking in confidence. A few weeks ago I let him play the offertory for our 5:30 service, which I worship lead, and he was entertaining (it's a small group) but he rushed the song badly. Thus, he's nowhere near ready to play in our little band, BUT the other night -- Wednesday night, our dinner/class night -- I saw him in the elevator with his 10-year-old son and with his guitar! I haven't asked him yet, but I'm guessing he's playing for the kids, and building his confidence and skills. NICE.

    Thanks Fuller and Brian for the great insights into this very delicate subject. Being up-front with a person who has a heart to serve, yet does not have the skills is so much better than making them into wall art with their sound turned down, somewhat like playing the part of a palm tree in a school play about life on a tropical island. I know a church that does just that and when those soundboard muted people finally figure it out, they can be much more crushed and offended, feeling deceived and like they are just an outsider. It takes courage and sincerity to speak the truth in love and also great wisdom to direct that person into other ways to serve in the Worship Team while training for their next opportunity to audition. Another idea is to limit the newbies to less demanding songs while they develop their skills and overcome their stage fright. They may have a handful of simpler songs that they already worked through and are quite good at, while not being able to handle more complex music. We have to be raising up the next generation to carry our the Great Commission to share the Gospel. I really appreciate how you guys dedicate your time to making these many videos where you share your skill and insights. Brian, I cannot count the times that your guitar tutorials have given me just the signature riff patterns and chord structure that i needed to properly articulate a worship song for our Sunday service.

    Guys, this is so helpful! Thank you! And you're so very right on the thing with the tambourine. People, please don't give them a tambourine unless they're killing it! The last part of your video is just so funny. Like, I mean, everytime I try to sing the wrong pitches on purpose, I'm cracking up literally ALWAYS. Just hilarious. :D Yeah. However. Just commenting and watching all of your videos. Thumbs up.

    I have found that it can be good to give young or inexperienced musicians an opportunity to do one song in a set....bite sized chunks. The commitment song after the message can be a good slot for this so there is no distraction. Sometimes playing four new songs for an inexperienced musician is too big of a leap. This could be the subject of another video. Onboarding new musicians can be done gradually.

    It makes me sad to hear the suggestion that if someone can't cut it on the stage, they might be the perfect person to run sound. In a modern worship service, the audio mixer may be the most important musician in the group. It takes decades to master it. The devaluation of sound reinforcement is one of the reasons many praise bands never reach parity with secular groups.

    The “You are not ready” or “your almost there, but not ready” is the WORST thing a church can say to the auditioner. We ayate precisely the musical elements required to make the cut. Aso we record the performance so as to judge correctly. Thus when informing the person of not making it, measurable goals have been well thought out. We also will have a recording of the musician / singer so that the auditioner can see for themselves the difference between how they audition and expectation. Furthermore, in case of not making it, we informed the auditioner that they can become better through various ways: 1)have private lessons with someone 2) get private lessons through a music company 3) learn a song or songs through the internet.

    Hi Gents, thanks so much for your videos, they are immensely helpful. I recently became the worship director at my church. Can you talk about what to do in a situation where there are people who are already on the worship team that if I held auditions today, wouldn’t pass? Either vocalists who aren’t good enough or musicians who need work.
    Edit: I just found your video on how to remove someone from your team, thanks!
    Also, what do you do if someone wants to audition who plays an instrument that is not a ‘typical worship team’ instrument (violin, horn etc)?
    I’d also love to hear how you develop/maintain community with all the different areas of the worship arts teams (sound, lyrics, dance, vocals band etc)

    LOL! No one ever fails a worship team audition. If you can fog a mirror, your in! "Oh, you don't play an instrument - that's OK, we don't either!" LOL!

    I have a reason why to NOT have an audition! And I was just such a person (who did not audition for the team I'm on now). I was (recently) serving on another worship team when I met with the worship leader from my current church. He invited me to the next band rehearsal (to play with them) and after rehearsal, he asked if I would like to play that next Sunday! I guess you could call it a quizi audition, but I didn't do any of the 3 that you all mentioned. : ) Also, I'm thinking that if you (as the worship leader) visited another fellowship and or saw on video a musician/vocalist from another fellowship, who then wanted to be a part of your church, you may already know of their background and talent. So an audition wouldn't really be necessary. Its rare, but does happen (like in my case!) : )

      I think that your scenario isn't typical. If you are being asked to join, it's probably because you were already screened and were "scouted" out. Most people on worship teams that I know rarely get auditioned, when they really should be. OTOH, I've literally auditioned twice in about 40 years. Most of time I have been recruited or asked to help at multiple churches. If I had a pool of interested worship singers or musicians like a lot of mega churches do, I'd be auditioning. Small churches don't usually have that option and are desperately seeking help (often just anyone!) and that can also be detrimental to the goal of finding worshippers in spirit and truth.

    It has been heartbreaking to have to say no to folk who so desire to be involved in worship, and as part of a smaller church worship team, I have seen this; people who believe they are called, but somehow don't fit the dynamic. I've had this happen to me too, sidelined because of age or that because of a traumatic had injury and finger amputation, I had to begin guitar again from the ground up, and will never have the fingerstyle speed and dexterity I once possessed. Folk who feel called, will leave a fellowship because of this, and truthfully I've thought about this myself more than a few times. I remember being part of a team a while ago, which was joined by a fellow who played a 12 string loudly, very loudly, to the point where his instrument, which didn't possess decent tone at all (I think it had a ply sound board), drowned out other instruments, even the base and sometimes the vocalists; it was almost a one-man show sometimes, and when I was on sound, I'd turn his volume down, right down to zero and you could still hear him belting it out. A difficult dilemma, because a weak link affects a team's dynamic and breaks the chain of resonance between musicians and vocalists. Creative folk have feelings that are easily hurt and rejection is difficult to deal with.

    If your church is small, and you think you don’t have enough musicians to turn anyone away, think of it this way: you’re better off, the congregation is better off, and God is more truly honored, by one competent player on guitar or piano than by a full band of incompetent musicians

      G. Jerrod Cate You could have the person auditioning send a link/url of their audition video to an email or have a submission form on your church’s website where they could fill out info of themselves, instrument they are auditioning with and a space provided to share their audition link

      onebeyutiful no. Not everyone who has great musical ability can necessarily gel with other musicians

    My only beef here is with your suggestion that a drummer who isn’t quite good enough might make an ok percussionist. In my experience it’s usually the other way around.

    How often do people that get told no continue on and eventually make enough improvement to make it? I bet it's a pretty significant minority unfortunately. Definitely agree that not saying no can be way more detrimental than saying not yet but keep at it. ESPECIALLY if they play something you can't turn down like drums.

      yeatzee7786 absolutely. If someone is just shy of good enough, and isn’t motivated enough to grow by being told “not yet, work on xyz” they almost certainly aren’t going to strive to improve once they’re on the team.
