The Orthogonal Devices ER-301 is doing most of the heavy lifting as far as sound sources, but is assisted by Assimil8or and Make Noise modules. Super informative thank you for taking the time to put this out into the world. I would love to hear about how you find and select your samoles as well as what if any processing you do prior to loading them up! Everything sounds so polished and works well level wise and i feel that is one of the biggest struggles i have when using eurorack samplers.
Thanks! I make all my sample. As for processing for levels, I’m a huuuuge overcompressor haha so that helps. Then I compress again coming out of the rig ( WMD MSCL) then again in ableton. So that’s how the sausages are made you might say 😀

The Nerdseq is the latest addition to my setup, which is where I found this vid. I think we might have a vaguely similar musical aesthetic, though definitely some different module choices going on as well of course. I have a Bitbox, a Rample, and 2 Disting EX's which - I think! - are doing something similar to the Assimil8or and 301 here ... feel free to browse the channel and see what you think. I've been on a bit of a break for the last 6 months for various reasons but am hopefully getting back into it all now.

Don’t tell anyone I said this, but I think assimil8or with some waveshapes sounds better (and obviously tracks better) than most analog oscillators. 🤫

I’m perving over the nerseq, currently rocking a Hermod and varigate as an upgrade from the Rene mk1 but the more I see the nerseq being used in the kind of creative context you are using it I’m more and more tempted. I’m a big warp records / idm fan and think the nerdseq can give me the results I’m after. The only thing putting me off is that there are times I just want immediate jamming fun ( which is why I enjoyed the Rene) and the nerseq seems like it requires a fair bit of menu diving to get the best out of it. I’ve got a fairly decent sized system and eloquencer is competing with nerdseq for my replacement
Eloquencer is almost exponentially faster than Nerdseq. It’s truly a pleasure to work with and super powerful. As far as overall control and and power though, it can’t really compete with Nerdseq unless you’re super hands on. The biggest reason I use nerd is because I actually need all of the cv and trig expanders as well as the local ones. It is certainly a module you have to dive into and program. Honestly, given what you’ve said, i’d try elo first. When you first dive into nerd it will be frustrating enough that you’ll just be left wondering about the elo. Not that I question your ability to learn nerd, it’s just.. it takes some getting used to haha

I have a plan im about to.implement where i use hermod as a midi to cv converter and play my modular with ableton push, record and live sample the modular in ableton etc so.im gonna see how that works out before i buy anything else. In the meantime it gives me time to save money before i decide what the next step is.

How do you chop/slice drum breaks on this thing? I have a hardware tracker and renoise but kinda thinking heavy to eventually delve into this because I wanna get into modular and enjoy the tracker workflow but not sure or haven’t seen anybody slice up breaks like how it’s done in other trackers yet

any modules youd recommend for approximating the er301? I was looking at the bitbox micro but the er301 seems much more capable, but i simply dont have the cash to spend on a 2.5k module used
The er301 is vastly more capable than the bitbox. That said, even if you did have 2.5k is spare cash, you’d be crazy to spend that much on a 301. It’s just not worth all that. The way I use the 301 can be approximated with just a few more modules. A couple of disting ex could get you close. But like, it depend on what you want to do exactly.
Amazing setup that creates a lot of interesting sound👍 I gone think a really want the NerdSeq, that thing is powerfull.I own the assimil8or too and have a smaller Erica Drum Sampler that use sample slicing. The Nerd Seq gives a lot of control over CV in your setup that can be changed in a short time to something completely different !

Great rundown and explanation! I was always curious how the 301 fit into the setup. Thanks for the inspiration for working with rhythmic samples that are not sync'd or even temporally related. My brain would have always wanted to sort out samples/loops based on tempo.

Huge thanks for this one! I hope you're gonna keep posting things like this. One thing: you mentioned you use a lot of rhythms produced beforehand. Does it mean that you keep the SD cards filled with those samples? Like pre-production must be a great effort here, right? In another video perhaps you could show which sounds come from the Assimil8or and the ER301. Again, thank you, enjoyed it a lot!
Yup that’s right! Sd cards are always filled with things to work with. Pre production is actually easier than you would think for the glitch stuff. I’m planning on doing a video on how that works at some point in the future.
So great to see you set up in some detail. At 13.00 you say that’s one sample, so is that a loop, not a one-shot, right?
If you mean the samples inside the 301, no it’s not exactly a one-shot or a loop. It’s basically a chunk of sound. So like, if you took a song and randomly cut a short piece out of it and then shaped it with an envelope a little bit. Does that make sense?

Thank you for sharing this, I'm in love with the Nerdseq and really like your approach overall, great job! As a cheaper alternative, do you think a 1010 bitbox would do the job well as a sampler here? 301 is really out of my range right now
Yeah, the 301 prices are crazy right now and the module is just not worth that much coin. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great, just not 1.5-2k great. To an extent, yeah it would work. The problem is (if I remember correctly) you can’t sequence sample slices. I also just really don’t jive with 1010. They’re not bad modules, I just don’t like how they operate. I think I’d actually recommend disting or tiptop audio one. I’m pretty sure they can both sequence sample slices, and that’s most important imo

Yup! I can’t remember the key combo, but I want to say it’s mark>shift+nerd? I’d have to check if you can’t find it! 👾
re 301 patch for routing mixed outs, if you can't just set negative gain on one of a pair of crossfaders - does the 301 not have a crossfader unit or something that can do that job?

VCV rack is a free software online that is a GREAT place to start, it’s super powerful and loads of fun!
I love the concept of looking around for relationships between the samples. I'm incredibly interested to learn more about your 301 routing and the 4 x 120 sound samplers...does each sampler have a single track/buffer that has 120 sounds on them? Are all 4 the same 120 sounds? And then is NerdSeq just calling splice markers based on the 10 octave note values? etc. etc. etc.....very awesome system and control you have over it

Another question, I can’t seem to find it in the manual, so I’m assuming NerdSeq doesn’t do it…but, can it do the random fill with conditions like the Polyend does (by with conditions I mean setting % of filled slots, note range, scales etc)? From time to time I need a nudge from another source to get things going.
I’m 90% sure it can’t do it the same way the polyend does (that was actually one of my favorite features of the polyend). I’m pretty sure you can highlight and fill with random triggers and notes ect. But not the way polyend tracker does

I don’t think I would go for that as your main reason especially if you otherwise like pt. Pt is quite a bit different than Nerdseq and Nerdseq has a decent learning curve even if you have a history with trackers. The midi sequencer is way more user friendly and overall useful on the pt than Nerdseq. Nerdseq fits my system perfectly. I’ve tried to use it in many other contexts (meaning outside of euro) and it can be really cumbersome in that context. Powerful, but cumbersome. Pt and nerd are both “trackers” but they are by no means interchangeable in my honest opinion.
@@userfriendlysounds not married to the PT. Just like it’s fill feature the most. Don’t use it for samples or anything internal really. I just use it with my rack, and the 8 tracks run out quick. Another reason for thinking of swapping. Other than that I don’t really use the PT.

You have made me want a er301. Will they ever make one again or will it always be expensive and no production.
I don’t know. I doubt O|D even knows. This can be done without the 301 though. You just need a few more modules. For example I think the tiptop audio One can select samples per cv.
I say this but own way to much modular myself so I truly don’t have any right saying anything. Honesty I’d love to see what you could do with my setup.
Also, if I had a dollar for every time someone said you could do the same with a Octatrack. Why all them digital samplers. I chuckle inside.
@@Nastermusic honestly, this system I have is basically something like an octatrack with an even worse UI. haha So it is true. I'd say the biggest things this system has over octatrack is more storage space and better FX. (i mean the system as I use it. it is over all more capable than an octatrack). but I don't know. To me, this is not modular synthesis. Modular synthesis is logic, and clock dividers and lfos and envelopes, oscillators and noise sources, offsets and attenuators. this is case is a groove box.

I have been collecting samples from all over for the past 15 years or so. So no place in particular. I just go through my collection and find drum hits i like!
So cool to see how you've got this system set up! So powerful with the two 127 sound samplers. That's basically how I have my video clips set up. You can transpose and instantly have something new and interesting. I also love the recursive re-sampling concept! So cool! There's a couple of moments in the video where you copy and paste the row of blocks and then bring up the nerd menu maybe? But then it suddenly sounds completely different. What menu item were you hitting there? There were some really nice beats that came out of just your demonstration!
Thanks for watching! It’s actually 4 120 sound samplers! 😋 pretty sure what you say was me transposing all of the steps. If you do it from the menu you can select how much you want transpose then hit okay so you can prep and time when you actually transpose. There’s several ways to do it, but it’s exactly like you say with your video rig. You always get something new and interesting!
@@userfriendlysounds wow! I have thought about doing something similar with the Erica Synths Sample Drum. Just load up a few wav files with a bunch of drum hits with cue points. On the docket!

sick walkthrough, Gus! i love every second of it! i got two questions: what are the settings on the mscl, and how do u get your mixes that tight with no mud? are your samples eq'd before going into assim/er301 to help with the mixing?
Thanks my friend! I don’t have any one particular setting. I just kinda noodle around until it sounds right. I usually will do a little work to the samples, some eq and compression. But a big part of it is arrangement. Like just allowing sounds the room they need when they do. Also, ableton drum buss makes everything sound great haha

@@Trentabyte usually compress. I can do a patch where a multi track to some extent. But most of the time I work stereo out. Drum buss would be at the very end in that case.

@@Trentabyte i mean i love smashing stuff from time to time, not with MSCL for the most part though. I dont think it sounds that great when you really push it. No, everything in Assimil8or is mono. You see the left and right out put patched so that I can send different samples to different inputs on the 301. So for example I have the toms and kick (low frequency) on the left output, and everything else on the right output. Everything is mixed together in the 301. everything comes out of the 301 into morphagene and lastly into mscl. From mscle to ableton!

This is a Trogotronic case. I swapped out the power supply for eskatonic buss boards though. Trogotronic supplies are SUPER powerful, but too noisy for me especially with so many digital modules. Haha

@@blendragon28 no, it’s a Trogotronic case. 84hp, 6U. It’s eskatonic power supplies. The panels for the Erbverb, ER301 and Assimil8or are all from Audio Parisites in Australia. They do great work!

@@userfriendlysounds if you don’t mind, I’ve got another question for you. I’ve been trying to use my MPC to trigger slices in the ER301, 12TET, but each sample in my sample chain gets triggered by 3 to 4 pads before triggering the next. I’m using an FH-2 to convert midi to cv. Tested using a midi kb controller with the same result.
Is it possible that in order for 12TET to work you need 120 samples in a chain, and my result is because it’s splitting the octave range across my sample chain (mine only have something like 30 samples). I’m just trying to figure out why it’s not working. I thought nearest or index might have helped with that, but, no luck.

@@TRaddcliff No i dont mind at all! hmmm. I'm not entirely sure. There is a lot of variables in that set up. I know I have done 36 (3 octaves) samples before with no issue, but I've not tried 30. Also, are all of the samples evenly spaced? like exactly? lastely, I assume you have the trigger delay on the gate of the sampler in the 301 right?

Woah, been waiting for this since I first started following you on Insta (I'm yea lace on there) huge fan of your work and also personally obsessed with the pairing of nerdseq and assimilator (and nerdseq + midi sequencing) But ultimately with you I'm very curious about your generative stuff and how you plan it out so I'm so excited to watch this! I probably will never be able to afford an ER 301 at this point but I know it will still be very insightful ( and maybe I can hope to replicate something like this with something like Daisy patch perhaps but my version would probably also use Desmodus Versio in stead of Erbe-verb and probably a disting or two heh .... also I prefer to use Befaco hex mix for each of the Assimil8or channels rather than L/R output like you have.... but of course the way yr doing it saves that valuable space. If I had one request from Rossum it would be to add filters to the Assimil8or channels so I can isolate frequencies of the drums for better mix etc...
Assim and Nerdseq is SUCH a power combo. Honestly, the 301 is not necessary to run something very similar. Might need a bit more hp, but it’s definitely doable. Thanks so much for watching! Hope you can grab a few ideas from it!
