    Don, this is amazing. Chris and Gerard were light years beyond all other comedy writers.

      I only saw Gerard on the Letterman show once in the early eighties and it was so memorably funny, I remember the whole appearance to this day. He came on dresed as batman, and when Dave questioned why he was wearing a batman costume, Gerard replied "You know Dave, its just so comfortable". Im not describing Gerard's attitude or timing that made this scene so funny. Everything about him was funny.

    this is the most perfect summary of the macarena phenomenon imaginable.
    they should show this in schools so future generations can learn.

      Not to get too political for a moment but as a youngish millennial back in 2016, I just remember the macarena having a miniature comeback of sorts due to a meme that went viral that showed it being played at the 1996 DNC.

      @@IowanMatthew683 uh, you're here to share a memory you have of the past? Thought Police! GOD, why does everything have to be so POLITICAL??
      But seriously, the fact that you even hesitate to share your memory here illustrates, tragically but also laughably, the extent to which so many viewers BELIEVE they are being persecuted, such that writing a comment like yours necessitates a preceding apology. It shouldn't have to; say whatever you damn well please.
      But then again, you must be a shill for the DNC for leaving your comment, durrrr right?? Stop dividing the country!! yawn, etc.

    I was just watching this when I realized I was in the audience that night. Lol. For the second macarena sketch. It was on a Friday.
    I've been to a few tapings on both Late Night and the Late Show.

    I don't like to say negative things about Letterman, but to me this is indicative of what went wrong with The Late Show's comedy in the 90s. In the 80s they would do a lame bit that they knew was intentionally-crafted-to-be-lame, then Dave would "break the 4th wall" and comment on its lameness. Here, he seems so tired, and his detachment from the joke is almost painful to watch. Gerard was better utilized as a straight man anyways (re: holding a "baby Chris Elliott") than the sole comedic subject. I did however enjoy the musical guests of the 90's shows!

    I'm watching this one a week late, but it brought 2 questions to my mind that only Don could answer, so here they are: first, when was the first show Dave wore his glasses from start to finish, monologue to goodnight? Second, when was the last time Dave went out to film a remote? I remember them being phased out, and he always sort of used Rupert nearly being assaulted as the catalyst for not wanting to go out anymore, but I don't really have an ironclad idea of when he stopped doing them for good. If you have feedback on either, I'll just be here hanging out, waiting...no pressure...

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  3 роки тому +3

      First full-show wearing glasses: March 16, 1998.
      I think he abandoned Remotes after the heart surgery in January 2000. But he did do one - the last one - with Billy Eichner on April 1, 2015.

      @@dongiller A. you're a national treasure, B.) the Eichner remote was so great, you could tell Dave really appreciated what Billy did, Billy was clearly psyched to have Dave doing a bit with him...good times. 2015 feels like 80 years ago.
