    I love the videos because they're quick and highly educational for somebody who's learning to play the game. It is helping me to learn things that are secondary to the point of the video. Like now I know why all my dwarves keeps sprinting into the caverns that opened up to collect webs when I didn't tell them to. It's an auto labor. It's also a reason why the cave crocodiles ate everybody.

  • @YanniCooper
    @YanniCooper Рік тому +11

    While you're in the Automated Workshops menu [@ 3:50 ], it's often good to turn off auto collect webs until you've breached the caverns and/or set custom collection labors so that your dwarves don't all run out to pick up that silk and instead get eaten by giant spiders or worse.

    I'm inspired to make surface farms! I think I'm going to make walls that completely enclose a surface area that will have enough room for farms and a hatch that leads down into the main fortress.

    • @xway2
      @xway2 Рік тому +3

      They need to have something for their upper body and lower body. I'm pretty sure a dress only counts as upper, but otherwise it's exactly as you would expect. I think they might need shoes as well but I'm not sure on that. Stuff like caps and gloves are not necessary but can improve their mood so it's not a waste if you have the materials to spare. Same with having multiple items on the same area, like a shirt and a vest.

    • @wanderingintheabyss
      @wanderingintheabyss Рік тому

      @@xway2 I've read that shoes help protect their feet from injury, and therefore infection.

      If you want to minmax clothing, a full set with the best coverage that you can craft yourself is dress, robe, cloak, trousers, socks, shoes, gloves, mittens, hood, and a cap. Yes, they can wear all of that at the same time.

    I had an excess of cotton that wasnt being used so i decided to bring it back to my fellow neighbours who were selling it. I made an abrupt decision of making the leader of the fortress be a simple miner that wasnt took well on several of character sheets. Still decided to put a full scheme on female militia and growers so the male could focus only on butchery and mining. But all went berserk. Specially went hell broke loose deep down. Good memories.

    Could you make a video about traps?
    And how to use them to stop an attack.

    • @xway2
      @xway2 Рік тому

      Cage traps are great because it's basically an insta-"kill", but then you have to get someone to bring a new cage before it can be used again. Weapon traps just do a bunch of damage but can keep swinging. You're going to need mechanisms (from a mechanics workshop) to construct them. How you want to use them is a bit up to you. As long as there is a path into your fortress, enemies will use that to try to get in, so you can fill it with traps. If that's the strat you want, then you want a proper normal entrance with a drawbridge that you can close (build a lever and click it to link it to the bridge). But the point is you want to keep the long winding path open. Another way is to just put a bunch of traps around your entrance. Your dwarves won't spring your traps unless they fall unconcious. Another bonus of cage traps is that if that happens you can just let them out, they won't be injured. In my experience you're not going to stop anything but the smallest attacks (snatchers, basically, or a werecreature to be fair) with just traps. You probably want a military as well.

    Could you do a video on how to get the most out of your farm animals, or just the basics? I keep getting more and more animals from migrants, and can't find any use for them as every job I queue seems to whine about missing an ingredient. My animals just stand outside doing (I assume) nothing.
    Things like:
    - Do I need to manually assign animals to the pen I've created every time I get a new animal?
    - How do I automate milking/shearing?
    - How do I butcher animals I don't want? Can I select specific animals?

    • @xway2
      @xway2 Рік тому

      So first of all you need to select which direction the bridge is going to raise. You do this when you build it. The icons aren't perfect but it's literally just the direction (north east south west) that the arrow is pointing. You also need to build a lever somewhere. You then click on the lever and select "link" or whatever it says. Basically you can either pull it or link it. You then click on the thing you want to link it to (the bridge). Your dwarves will now use two mechanics to go set this up. When that is done, you can click the lever again and tell them to pull it, and when they do that should raise the bridge.

    Don't know if you are aware but YT has locked 1080p behind premium on this video, and the only other option is 360p now. This makes the in-game UI text unreadable for the most part.
    I've been playing DF for many years so it's not a big deal for me, but someone coming in new will struggle making out any references to the UI.
