For anyone who may be looking for any longboard coaching video analysis, we're getting things up and running and I'd be stoked to assess and set up a plan for what you're looking to improve on! If you are at all interested please feel free to email at longboardcoaching@outlook.com Cheers everyone! Ben 🤙
Congrats on your acceptance…will check out your progress on tour. Regarding your comment on bottom turns loosing speed, I think that only applies to small waves. On head high or overhead waves, you gain speed dropping in, and if you time it right, that speed is transferred down the line when you jam a turn just as you hit the bottom. This was a classic move in Hawaii by many famous old time surfers on the North Shore. On such a turn, you’ve looked down the line while paddling, but have to focus on the bottom so as not to pearl while you drop, then look at the lip and down the line again as soon as you’ve cranked a turn. Best wishes for your longboard tour.
Really good point! There will still be the flats and area we want to avoid riding into at the bottom of the wave without being on rail, but you’re exactly right that there will be more natural speed and power and much less likely to get stuck in this area unless we’re not engaging any rail
Hugest congratulations, that is awesome. Can not wait to watch ya compete and will be cheering you on. You have helped me with so many things to work on. Thanks
Thanks so much for the support, I really really appreciate it, beyond stoked already and can’t wait to give it a go! Super happy you’ve found everything helpful as well, thanks once again 🙏🤙 yewww!!
Thanks Ben. I couldn't see when you did that in the videos. It is a particular problem for me as I am very short- sighted, and have to be ultra careful I don't drop in .
Yew! Could you maybe make a video sometime explaining the current structure of the WLT? Such as stops, qualification board, requirements, number of competitors, and all your thoughts on those matters? Not toooo much info online, even from the wsl hahah
For an intermediate, anything with wide point in the middle, around 23 1/4 wide and with a little bit of rocker, even for a log is a good bet. Where we can run into problems is where we go too flat and wide point back too early in our surfing which are boards optimised for advanced skills without lending themselves to laying the foundations very well. All just my opinion of course, but I hope that's helpful!! :)
I would say definitely just before you do your pop up, you want to allow yourself time and energy to paddle in to drive yourself into the momentum of the wave but allow for time to sit back on your board and pull back if there is someone on your inside. So as you’re getting in your last couple of paddles is usually a good time. But having great awareness prior to this point is also important so you’re not getting in anyone’s way who may already be on the wave 🤙 hope that makes sense! 🤙
Despite what the speech guides say, I suggest you don’t use your hands so much while talking…I find it distracting…use them when needed for emphasis occasionally, not continually.
Incredible, Ben is amazing by passing is surfing knowledge to everybody for free, and you're pointing about his hands movement on the videos!!!! For God Sake, shut up, listen and learn. Thank you very much Ben, from surfer to surfer.

What long boards would you recommend for an intermediate

At what stage do you check you are not dropping in on zomeone?
I would say definitely just before you do your pop up, you want to allow yourself time and energy to paddle in to drive yourself into the momentum of the wave but allow for time to sit back on your board and pull back if there is someone on your inside. Will keep that in mind!! Not something I’ve thought about but I’ll try ease it down!! Haha
