Other people may have told you this already, but in the USA, Amtrak sleeper trains have two major types of rooms: small roomettes that are only a couple of seats that fold down to make a bed, and larger bedrooms that also have a combined shower-toilet compartment like what you had here. There are also separate showers on the sleeping cars, but they do not have tokens, nor do they cost extra like on the Japanese Sunrise train. (My wife and I rode the Cassiopeia sleeper in Japan between Sapporo and Tokyo Ueno in 2007 and I'm glad we had the chance to do so before JR started cutting back on the sleepers. I only wish I could have booked one of the deluxe rooms on that trip -- now I'll never have the chance.)
I rode the Sleeper from Glasgow to London in 2015 when it had the previous generation of equipment, and it was not a great experience. I am glad to see that the new Mk 5 sleepers are a big improvement. My wife and I plan to go to Glasgow in 2024, and taking this train is definitely on our list of things to do, especially if we can get a room like the one in which you traveled here. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Sadly, the train in so fast that 8 hours of sleep is impossible, and the complimentary breakfast further shortens it, not to mention room service. Dinner is unthinkable, the trains departs at midnight. When the price hits 400 dollars, perhaps something more than a microwaved porridge would make sense as a breakfast treat. Not that you had time to eat it on board. So, all the improvements are wasted owing to the schedule.

Obviously you like to plan ahead and if you have concrete plans then I would suggest you book the Caledonian Sleeper as far ahead as possible. Reason: if you want the double room, it's most likely to be the one that will sell out first. It's usually available for booking 1 year in advance. I'm not involved in promoting any business but as a reasonably seasoned traveller, I like people to enjoy the countries they visit. Happy to help if I can with your visit to Scotland.

I spent a lot of time on the train as a solo traveler not confident about driving on the other side and it was a very peaceful and beautiful experience. I've been really excited for you to get to travel farther afield again and do so many iconic train trips, it's very cool to see people do stuff you know means a lot to them

At least you understand that we use different dialects over here in Britain. I understand that the gap between American English (which I think might be the one you are used to, please correct me if I am wrong) and British English is about the same size as the one between Kansai Japanese and Tokyo Japanese.
The reason it says "31% Cocoa" on the chocolate bar label is due to a law that food sold in Britain must contain at least 20% cocoa solids before it can be sold as chocolate.
The train also stops at Watford Junction to pick up passengers.
Preston is pretty much the last English station before the Sleeper heads to Scotland.
    That's some real Scotch Mist.
Scotland is the coldest home nation of the United Kingdom.
Of course it is as clean as a bullet train. Both our sleeper trains are luxury trains. The shoe polisher is because some people actually ride the Sleeper on business, and it helps to look your best before a big meeting.
Yes, it is pretty common to mix sugar or honey or golden syrup into porridge to give it some taste, you are doing it right. And the whole warming effect is why porridge is a popular hot breakfast in Britain, especially during winter. That porridge oat bar is useful if you are "on the go".
Motherwell is one of the first Scottish stations you see on the Sleeper route.
And there is no jetlag when riding a train.

As someone who lives in Scotland, I'm glad you got to try out the new Sleeper trains. They only just replaced the old stock a couple of years back. Compared to the old tired stock from the (early 90s?), this new sleeper is clean, slick, modern and has a lot of up to date facilities to cater to todays passengers. You never got a shower/ toilet in your room in the past, or USB ports or anything else for that matter.
On the plus side, great to see they provide food, drink and toiletries from Scottish Suppliers! Mackies make brilliant chocolate, and our water is ace too. (Personal note: Shame they didn't supply Strathmore water!) The menu with a Scottish-y theme is good, and porridge and a hot drink never goes wrong.

Took the trains (especially the sleeper but they weren’t nice back in the late 80’s to early 90’s, as they are now), buses, ferries and some planes, everywhere, when I was there. Loved Edinburgh and Inverness too; shame I didn’t see Nessie (The Lochness monster) when I was there but I tried. The Scottish people left a good feeling to my time there in my soul and yeah, there seagulls everywhere there, like in Florida (where I Live). 😅 Thank you for sharing your time with us all and stay safe in your overseas travels. 🥰😇

There is also a daily Caledonian Sleeper which runs from Euston to Aberdeen / Inverness / Fort William that I often use (but not in the most expensive room!) The Fort William one is the one I like best - it leaves London about 21:00 and gets to Fort William about 10:00, and goes through some beautiful mountain scenery in the morning.

Hope you had a good time in Scotland. I live in Scotland and have taken the sleeper a few times. It runs as far as Aberdeen to London, so the journey can be a few hours longer. No, we do not normally have showers in the toilet lol, but I guess they had to get creative with space. I believe the loading gauge for UK trains is one of the most restrictive due to our generally very old rail systems. As for porridge, you add honey to taste - so some people (like myself) don't want our porridge sweetened, others like a dash, and I guess some people chuck the whole pot in!

I did the Caledonian Sleeper 17 years ago, so I should really do it again. I usually end up getting the day train when I visit London (you can sometimes be lucky and get first class cheaper than a normal seat on that train!). The Caledonian Sleeper can be pricey which is one reason I haven't done it in so long. I'm hoping the next video is you doing the day train up into the Highlands as the trip to Fort William or Mallaig is beautiful. I like that the sleeper uses the Arran Aromatics brand for its toiletries - they do really nice products. I think they have the shoe cleaner because the train is popular with hillwalkers. Hi, I'm from England, but I've travelled to Japan many times. (Actually, I live near the station for the Harry Potter tour.) I'm glad to see you enjoyed your journey. Everything looks very nice on that train, but the price is absolutely inexcusable. I'm sure you would pay half of that for the same experience in Japan - and that was only a one-way ticket. Anyway, I subscribed. Enjoy your time in Scotland, it's a beautiful place!

And, for that whacking price, you'd think they'd keep the diner open all night serving proper food.

My wife and I took this trip on the sleeper in 2018 - your documentary was very evocative - brought back some of the feelings for us both. Love your comments, brief, to the point, and sort of Japanese too :+) Another night train we liked was the Rome to Catania (Sicily) one - the train gets loaded onto a ferry while you sleep, get off the train in Catania (or Palermo) for espresso and cornetto.
