Notice also how the Obelisk he summoned is the actual ancient egyptian god, not the card version Pegasus created.

While Yu-Gi-Oh definitely screws its own rules, it's not the case here. They were in the resting place for Atem, his servants and the millennium items.
Kaiba's ancestor (Atems cousin) was Pharaoh after Atem left. As such, Kaiba could call upon them.

In the original Japanese it was explained how Kaiba was able to pull Obelisk. The location where they are dueling is the final resting place of the gods and Atem. Aigami explained that Kaiba somehow was able to pick up on the god's energy. But Aigami was still confused on how Kaiba can call and control a god because the gods were the servants of the pharaohs, which suggest that Aigami isn't fully aware of Kaiba's connection to Ancient Egypt or that Kaiba was the cousin of Atem and then later pharaoh.
I like not having it explained better, because it looks like Kaiba just said "FUCK IT!" And just straight pulled a God card out of time and space, which is way more badass.

I also like when it's ambiguous so the viewer can speculate. And I went back and watched end of the anime again. When Atem had the final duel with Yugi, they said Atem's will was so strong it manipulated fate itself and let him draw the card he wanted. I like thinking Kaiba did the same thing here. He finally acknowledged the pharaoh and the magic, and now he can use the heart of the cards too.

I know it’s explained in the sub, but in the dub it seems like Kaiba brought obelisk back purely out of spite, which I love so much more, and the line “It’s no monster, it’s a GOD” is probably one of the hardest in the entire series
I like that theory. Also ZI think it’s kinda explained with the neurolink in his head that was able for him to holographically use all the cards he’s collected over the years, Obelisk was on of those cards. But i like that he just willed him back into existence even more

Well Kaiba actually accepted that magic was a real thing in the original Japanese broadcast and the manga; he just chose to not to care for it cause it’s in the past and he’s all about moving forward. However in this movie he’s unable to move forward because in the manga he wasn’t present for the ceremonial duel and didn’t get a chance to have his closure with Atem.

Kaiba learns Yugi's way of making up rules.
The funny thing is, out of all the asspulls of yugioh, this one actually makes sense in universe. Back in the final arc it's said that Obelisk would come to protect the pharaoh and all that in their time of need. All they need to do is call upon him. Atem uses this during the final arc to summon obelisk to fight bandit bakura. A small thing that goes by quickly is that Kaiba's ancestor, which Kaiba is basically the reincarnation of and shares the same faithful servants, he ended up becoming Pharaoh. While, in the memory, they defeat Zorc and then Atem hands over the position to Priest Seto before leaving, I imagine this played out the same way in real history when Atem sacrificed himself to seal Zorc. He probably gave his throne to Priest Seto before dying and being sealed in the puzzle. Long story less long, Kaiba is the reincarnation of the Pharaoh Seto, and Obelisk comes to the Pharaoh's in their time of need if they know his name.
Fun fact: Objectively there wasn't never an,asspull. Since everything was legit by the anime logic

The whole "Power *stronger* than infinity!" bull was *not* how that fight was described in the original dub, which instead said that it was a battle between the infinite forces of light (Divine Knight) and darkness (Divine Serpent). Thus, the fight ended in a double-KO, and Dartz merely lost on the technicality that summoning Divine Serpent required him to reduce his Life Points to zero. Once it was destroyed, that was the end of it.........

What they need to do is get rid of that censorship. The show was almost perfect if it wasn't for 4kids, that shadow realm nonsense changes everything. Also alot of people seem to be interested in season 0 yugioh lately, so I'd definitely like to see them complete season 0 yugioh and make it some alternate story, but that's wishful thinking.

All jokes and memes aside. This whole scene is God tier, pun intended. From the visuals, the animation, the flawless camera work, the music, and most importantly the dialog. It is just perfect, it gave me goosebumps and made me remember my childhood. Seeing Kaiba with Obelisk hit pretty hard not gonna lie, kinda got choked up a bit. This is Kaiba’s movie idc what anyone says.

I like how in the anime, Blue Eyes tells him to sacrifice Obelisk to summon it versus Ishizu, solidifying his attachment to BEWD and his ties to Egypt. And here, it's his ties to Egypt (though unexplained in the Eng dub) that allows him to sacrifice his three Blue Eyes to bring out Obelisk. It's a nice touch.
It's more like Kaiba cheats by not following the effect of the card he using to do this...

I imagine when Obelisk was summoned, he was thinking something like “you know what kid, i’ll let this happen, because you’re fighting for the Pharaoh.”
But It’s so hilariously in character for Kaiba to literally summon a god who can no longer be summoned
That, and the fact that Seto Kaiba is the modern day reincarnation of Priest Seto, who was Atem's cousin, and a close friend and ally to him. In fact, Priest Seto became Pharaoh after the events that led to Atem's death and the subsequent events that resulted in his soul being sealed away within the Millennium Puzzle. It's established in the manga and the anime that only those with strong wills or those who are tied to the Millennium items or their wielders in some manner or form can summon or control the Egyptian God cards. Anyone else trying to summon them, outside of a few circumstances, will not be able to control them, and would likely be driven insane, or even killed during the attempt. Being a reincarnation of Priest Seto (who was one of the original wielders of the Millennium Rod), and a man with a strong will, Seto Kaiba fit that bill completely.
Then, there's something in the manga version of _Dark Side of Dimensions_ that wasn't mentioned here: The reason Kaiba was able to call upon Obelisk despite the card technically no longer existing. It goes into greater detail, and explains that due to the site upon which they're dueling, which was in fact the same place where Atem and Yugi had their final Ceremonial Duel against one another, the energies and powers of the God Cards were present, and Kaiba was.....allowed to tap into that energy and power to call Obelisk back into existence through the force of his will, enabling him to summon him. I imagine Atem had a hand in that as well. It's hinted, or even alluded to, but never directly stated, but I honestly believe that Atem was watching the events that were unfolding, saw that Kaiba was on the verge of defeat and granted Kaiba access to Obelisk to protect him!
Atem’s Cousin, Priest Seto became pharaoh after Atem so it makes some sense.
Eventhough Yugi won from him, Obelisk still acknowledged Kaiba as the card's rightful user. It shows that much like Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Kaiba also had a similar bond with Obelisk, who considered him worthy enough to wield him. The fact that Priest Seto also became Pharoah after Atem defeated Zorc also explained Obelisk's relationship with Kaiba, he knew was of royal blood.

@Zook Dolphin I doubt that he made an extra copy of obelisk the tormentor because remember from the anime when Pegasus made the original Egyptian god cards the god cards were angry that he made the god cards into real cards and they tormented him and to anyone who used them who weren’t worthy of using them so that’s why Pegasus had them locked away for safe keeping and that’s the reason why he didn’t use them in the duelist kingdom tournament finals against yugi and atem
@Zook Dolphin also remember what igami said that when the pharaoh left this world so did the Egyptian god cards so they couldn’t have found it also the reason Kaiba was able to bring obelisk back from the after life was because only the pharaoh of Egypt can resurrect them and kaiba’s Egyptian counterpart took the throne of Egypt when atem left this world (from the final episodes of yugioh right before atem and yugi had the ceremonial duel to determine weather atem was ready to return to the afterlife or not) and Kaiba is the reincarnation of the Egyptian Kaiba therefore he could summon obelisk.

After the Pharoah's death in their real world, Priest Seto was next in line being a Pharoah's and he was entrusted with Obelisk's power. Meaning no matter what happens, Seto was always entrusted with the God and can summon him in the tomb

The egyptian god cards aren’t affected by field spells or by target spells.
Also they have some internal rules that arent in the cards but are confirmed, like theese ones:
-1: their summoning cant be denied once the player sacrifices 3 monsters or uses monster revive
-2: their effects cant be cancelled once they are activated.
So basically this time he was following the rules :p

@@SectorZeroGP Why would he have the card? If the cards still physically exist (which its pretty much stated they don't) then Yugi would still have them and not Kaiba. Not to mention its a hologram card game, so if he has the physical card he could play it regardless if the actual god was still around or not
It's made abundantly clear that Kaiba literally willed it into existence and pulled it from the afterlife here, which means it wasn't in his deck nor did he even draw it. So from a purely duel standpoint he clearly violated the rules

I mean he did get kidnapped enough times to probably be motivated to take the best self defence classed money can buy, Card game Kwon Do against Kaaba's duelling bots probably did the trick.

Man, Eric Stuart's voice took a real hit during that 15 year hiatus from voicing Kaiba.
Honestly, while probably not realistic for the character six months on, it works given his mental state at the time.

It’s not actually cheating with flare as the Egyptian god cards are not classified as monsters there divine best cards so effects that target monsters don’t affect them as there not classified as monster cards unlike blue eyes or that which all say monster
The 3 Gods in The Anime are pretty much immune to all effects that's why they are consider the most powerful monsters in the Yu-Gi-Oh show

This is technically part of Counter Gate's effect. If the card you draw after negating the attack is a monster that can be normal summoned, you CAN summon it. Kaiba just... bent the rules a little and drew from the deck of the afterlife

Reading the comments I understand how this was possible lorewise but LittleKuriboh should definitely make this the ultimate "Screw the rules, I have money"-moment. Although. "It's not a monster, it's a god" is hard to beat
I think the funniest part of this movie to me in hindsight is the realization that Kaiba has compartmentalized his rivalry with Yugi, where he's willing to be cordial and even friends with Yugi, BUT THE PHARAOH THOUGH FUCK THAT GUY WHERE'S THE SALTY RUNBACK
The fabric of reality itself is no match for the sheer will of Seto Kaiba. Even an Egyptian God shows him unshakeable loyalty.
Geez imagine if they showed all 3 gods. Obelisk looked awesome by himself but imagine if he was joined by Ra and Slipher at the end when Atem returned

For anyone who's unaware, Kaiba's past life (or whatever, it's not 1:1) actually became Pharoah after Atem, as they were blood related.
*This* is why Obelisk came to Kaiba, who by technicality is *also The Pharoah.* In their time of need, the gods will answer the Pharoah's call.

One thing I really like about this scene is that they make Obelisk much more conspicuously CGI. A lot of anime try to blend it into the animation unsuccessfully, here it looks like they went all in on making it stand out as such to emphasize the monsters, and it really works for Obelisk since he's in the upper echelon among them
