  • Years ago, I made a shift boot for my Miata using microfiber fabric. It looked good at the time and I was quite happy with it. However, this is the same fabric I used on my dash and door panels, which is really intended for furniture and therefore has no UV protection. This resulted in all of these parts fading in certain places over time. I had some real alcantara left from other projects, so I decided to take a stab at making a new one from real alcantara.
When I made the microfiber one, I had the original leather boot to use as a pattern. All these years later, I had to work off my microfiber one and adjust measurements. Needless to say, the final product left much to be desired when it came to fitment. It looked great on a table however lol. I ended up redoing it with leather and one panel of alcantara (which was all I had left) and got a better result. Follow along on this two part series to see how I got from a nice boot that looked good but fit poorly to one that looks good and fits properly.
