Interestingly Paul Scofield, A Man for all Seasons, essentially "stole" the Oscar from Richard Burton for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
But agreed about GC. She has been nominated for Oscars without winning more times than anyone. Once upon a time that was true for Burton too.

@@davemillet4160 I've seen both "The Wife" and the first season of "Damages". Superb work. But Close is great in pretty much everything. I was only disappointed in her once, in "The Lion in Winter" 's TV remake. Somebody apparently decided to differentiate her from Hepburn by portraying Eleanor of Aquitaine as kind of a weepy dishrag, which completely threw off the balance of the battle between her and her estranged husband King Henry (Patrick Stewart) and their three sons. I'm inclined to blame the director, because Close absolutely has everything needed to do that role up brown. A real shame, slightly redeemed by a sparkling performance of the young King Phillip of France, the only clear upgrade on the original: Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in Timothy Dalton's role.

Glenn was already 35 years old when she first appeared in "The World According to Garp" in 1982, a major career gamble for an actress considering the fickle nature of Hollywood and its offhanded treatment of women. I agree. Integrity has been lost. Integrity is acting above all within one’s own ethics regardless of the consequences simply because one cannot sleep with themselves if they do not act within those bounds. It isn’t about recognition, popularity, or reward. It is about one’s own inner compass. We are too much about immediate reward and regard by others as if that is the measure of success/righteousness.

There is such a big difference in honing your skills in front of a different 'live' audience every day, where there are no do-overs than making a movie where only the cast & crew are present & you can do multiple 'takes' of a scene. That's the reason people like Ms. Close & Mr. Washington return to the stage, to play to a live audience... it's a whole other experience, in acting.

"Man For All Seasons" was a favourite play in our school English Literature class in the 1960s; 3 of Sir Thomas Moore's principles still stay with me: when asked to sign the declaration, to save his life, but in his mind think otherwise he refuses; when accused of trying to be a martyr do read his response; & when his son-in-law says he'd break every law to catch the devil Moore replies " when the last law is down & the devil turns on you, where will you hid?" Lessons here for the likes of Kevin McCarthy, Lindsay Graham & the Republicans.

it’s true that A Man For All Seasons idealizes More too much. (And Hilary Mantel has a thing or two to say about that.) But in a way that makes him even more relevant and more engaging: he’s not necessarily a good man, but he finds his principles and stands his ground when it matters. Quite different from many politicians who tell themselves they’re good people, occasionally muttering what they know to be the truth, but they are easily bullied into forgetting their principles.

It is still sad to think that Fatal Attraction, although one of her biggest films, was supposed to have such a different (and the one they originally filmed) ending.

@@FirewindII They had completed filming, with the different endinh. All good, film wrapped etc. The original was where she manages to frame Douglas's character for murder, so she sort of 'wins' in the end.
Then it didn't do well at test screenings and audiences wanted something where, essentially, "the crazy lady gets defeated by the man". 🤦‍♀️
Reportedly, Close haaaaated the changes and tried very hard not to have to film the ending we got on screen. Even having to be stopped from getting on a flight so she wouldn't be available.
In interviews since, she still talks about the altered ending as a betrayal of the character.

@@FirewindII I'll also add this: originally, Glenn's character ended her own life. It is foreshadowed earlier in the film when she plays an aria from the opera Madame Butterfly. In Madame Butterfly, the main character slices her wrists. Close's character was suppposed to do the same in the end, but that was all changed to make her into a monster that needed to be put down by the protagonist in the bathtub scene.

Although I think MOONSTRUCK is a charming film, I will ALWAYS believe that Glen Close was robbed the night she lost to Cher. Close was simply magnificent in FATAL ATTRACTION. She’s done such consistently marvelous work since that film of course. But there is no way on Earth 🌎 she should not have been awarded the Oscar for Fatal. I will never ever understand why she still doesn’t have an Oscar, but I admire her dogged dedication to her craft and to the work.

It's extremely rare for the Academy to reward thrillers with top awards like Best Actor or Best Actress. Silence of the Lambs was almost the only exception I can think of.

Say what you will about Mel Gibson as a person, but that Hamlet rendition was objectively good and Mel Gibson too gave a for him unusual but nevertheless mesmerizing performance. Considering some of his statements I suppose I shouldn't be surprised he played a slow descent into madness really well.
