I have been making these for more than 30 years, but use them as a purse. I took a class in the mid-80s from a Japanese lady who was the original designer. I adapted it with sewing a pocket on the end of the purse that could hold my phone. Cording was used to close the purse, with fabric "acorns" that were stuffed with cotton balls, and it has straps made from the fabric. It's always my go-to pattern when I want a new purse. The square used was 34 inches.
How clever! The bag itself is nice enough to *be* the gift; anything you put inside would just be icing on the cake.
My grand daughter recently told me she has 19 "close friends" at school...lol!....better start my Christmas bag sewing NOW!!..many thanks Katrina, you're a gem!
I made these as gift bags to use at Christmas. I filled one for my sewing friend with clips and she was able to stand up a small pair of scissors and a few other assorted sewing tools i each of the 4 "pockets" formed on each side of the flap. Brilliant and very well received! Thanks for your wonderful tutorials! Karen from Penticton, B C Canada
Such an adorable gift bag, it is nice enough to be the gift!!! LOL

Yes beautiful.
Darling bag!!!
Love it! Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful and easy! Will be trying my hand at them!❤
What lovely little bags! I truly like them very much and can't wait to make some myself. I do origami folding and also use Furoshiki method of folding fabric to wrap gifts. I was born and raised in the Far East and learned from my friends and school mates who were Okinawan and Japanese. I also make Shibori tie dye fabrics. Your origami bags fall right in line with my taste. Thank you for your demonstration. I enjoy how you explain the method for each portion of the construction of these bags. 💖
Furoshiki wrapping of gifts is lovely. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Lovely!❤

These are absolutely gorgeous and so easy! Just straight stitching all the way. I will 100% be making some of these as Xmas gift wrap!
oh so cute! Thanks for the tutorial....going to make some for Christmas gifts.
So very cute❤
Aw, how cute are these bags!! I may make them for an advent calendar with makeup, beauty products, etc, for my daughter, instead of the usual boring chocolate calenders. They're so gorgeous..and easy!! Thank you!!
I've made a few now, in shot silk, 11in by 11in, and got quicker each time, but could be quicker if my brain would stop glitching at the 'inside IS the outside' part!😂😂 they are totally adorable! Going to make a 30in bag to put hair products in, for my daughter, as a Christmas present. Wish me luck!!😂
Whoa, that was a challenge, BUT a 30in bag is obviously large, but with lightweight fabrics, it actually is very lovely, and the side 'pockets' can be utilised effectively too, with a button to secure it, or one side hand sewn shut. I made it to go on a strip set of hooks on a door, 1 large, 2 medium, 2 small, for the bedroom in complimentary fabrics. I wanted them to be decorative, but practical. I am a little addicted to making them...could you tell?! I utterly am in love with these!!
We are really glad you love this origami bag! 30 inches is very large. We'd love to see a picture of it - drop us an email sales@thesewingstudio.co.uk !
I will try it, it’s a great idea, thank you for sharing ❤
❤️❤️❤️👍great idea and love that bag simple and easy to make and low cost as well as quick to do .. your an excellent teacher .. thanks for sharing ..
Sew cute!
These are so adorable! This is also perfect timing as I need to make a special small birthday gift for an adult with special needs. Thank you. 😊
These are so lovely..thank you for the tutorial..off to make some 👏🏻👏🏻🥰
Adorable
Thank You for teaching me how to make a pouch to match my festive clothes. I'm from Pakistan ❤
These look so easy to make. I might decorate them with a stitched name tag under the button!
You could add so many cute embellishments to the flap too! Appliques, tassels, beading - endless options for adorableness
I've just made one and it was fun to do - easy to follow instructions. Just checking though if there should be an open triangle flap on the bottom??? Great project and I'm going to make some to raise money for Brownies
Thanks!
Hi April, thanks for your super thanks! Hope we helped.
ich liebe diese Tasche und hab sie bestimmt schon 20 mal genäht
Love this!!! We need reusable gift bag options and always interested ways to use up all the fabrics! I've seen bamboo gift bags, but time consuming. I can see maybe a combo action of both ideas?
Glad you enjoyed the video, we have one from Christmas a couple years back of gift bag ideas... ua-cam.com/video/m258F1y3xzA/v-deo.html
I'd like to use Xmas fabric to make them but I think that it's more versatile to make them out of non-seasonal fabric so they can be reused all year round or kept by the recipient to use for stuff like makeup or for travel etc.
So cute! When making the drawstring channel, what is the measurement from top of the bag down (channel height)? Also, what is the measurement for the corners when stitching across the point? Such a darling pattern!
Cute
I like this so much. you explain it so well. nice to watch your video. where do you buy that square tool?
❤️❤️❤️
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
💯👍
Have I done it right when the fabric showing under the flap is bigger on onside than the other as in right a left on each side. Thanks for sharing
I have a lot of scrap fabric I could iron to fusible interfacing and make these bags.
What do you put in between the layers of fabric in the larger bags?
Interfacing/stabilizer
@@sophiagraff4263 Hehe, it was “violin” in the transcript. Knew that was wrong!
I'm not familiar with the word vyling? What is this?
I think it's interfacing/stabilizer
I followed you till you turned the bag inside out. I guess I'll have to make one to see how turning it inside out allows for the outside fabric to show.
Hi Diane, its Vilene - a brand of stabiliser/interfacing.
Could someone please explain what she is saying to put between the squares? With her lovely English accent I can't figure it out, I'm from USA. ☺ thank you
Just found this video - I’m American and trying to learn what valine (spelling???) is - is this an interfacing? One side fusible? Or? Thanks.
Yes, it is a lightweight interfacing.
Vilene is the correct spelling.
What is "viling"? Closed captions spelled it "violin"😅
Hello! Katrina is saying 'Vilene' its a brand of stabiliser/interfacing.
@@SewingStudioI couldn’t figure that out either, so thanks for interpreting! 😂
I really wish when crafters were marking or showing stitches they would do one on just white with black stitches or vice versa. It is incredibly hard to see things on a busy fabric. Great tutorial otherwise. 👍
Why not to show when you sew? Would be much easier explanation 😅
It’s beautifull but not origami since origami breaks down into ori and kami folding and paper plus’s origami should not have any cuts, glue and def no stiching
I love this bag! Is there written instructions for it? 🪡🧵
Hi Barbara, if you watch the video again and take notes and hold the video while you write it down then you have all the measurements and tips for sewing. Hope this helps x
Not an easy project for me😢. Doesn't come out correctly if not perfectly aligned. And because fabric stretches no matter how careful, how many measurements, how many t-squares, I could not get a nice looking gift bag😢. AND, the fabric I wanted on the outside always ended up inside😢.
