    Slide outs are a nice idea, but you have the same problems whether you buy a $100,000 RV or a $2 million Prevost. Vehicles and holes in the frame structure, cantilevering modules and motorized sliding components don't play well together.

    A good friend of mine,😮 who was a mechanic retired a couple years ago. He wanted to live in an R. V. He read all kinds of books and magazines about R. V's. He even went to a couple factories in Indiana Where they build RV's. What he learned was that they used the cheapest materials from the tires up.

    I saw a video from a woman who bought a Thor small motor home for $125,000. She hasn’t been able to use it for a year because they can’t fix her slide. She was told her warranty doesn’t cover slides!! They are actually telling her it’s not a structural issue. One repair place showed her a ONE inch gap between the slide and the rollers! Then, they had cut out a portion of frame to install something and no one remembered to weld it back. It’s unbelievable.

    • @2Fast4Mellow
      @2Fast4Mellow Місяць тому

      That will never happen because it is not their intention to build a defective product.
      It is usually some worker who didn't follow the proper procedure. Even with robots things can go wrong, for example when the calibration is done incorrectly or when an incorrect program is loaded.
      That said, some issues are very expensive to solve after an RV is sold which is why they are often dragging their feet. But this isn't limited to RV's. Look at the issues with the Tesla Cybertruck. Vehicles might look simple, but they are complex machines and a small error can accumulate in a very big issue.

    After a lifetime of tent camping we bought our first tow behind in 2016.
    Since them we had 3 RVs, two pull behind and the current Motorhome.
    The two pull behinds where Forest River Rockwoods so somewhat recognized as "top of the line" and they basically had no problems.
    Our Motorhome is a Thor product and produced in 2021 so during Covid era.
    Two things that saved us a lot of headache:
    1 - Our dealer (where we bought all 3 of them) did a really deep evaluation and found 46 items then fixed before delivering the MH to us.
    2 - Besides trusting our dealer, I now take the MH to Thor service facility instead the dealer, the reason is because is faster and when you are paying (we have extended warranty) things are different.
    3 - I did/do almost all repairs I can do at home because many independent Rv repair guys are not any better than what you find working at dealers...
    Lesson is:
    1 - Have a good dealer
    2 - Have an extended warranty
    3 - Learn to work on it yourself
    Even people with cash enough to buy Prevost have problems.

    Well if you aren't ultra-wealthy and are a little bit of a do it yourselfer I think you'd be better off buying an older rig and spending some money to refit that one. I have a 24 yearl old Monico and I have spent a lot of money on it, some of it self-inflicted, but for all it's issues it has never been something that can't be fixed. All the equipment they installed back in those days was high quality stuff and you can get most of it off the shelf today. Also the cabinetry is very good. No particle board in this rig anywhere. None. It's built of steel, aluminum, fiberglass, plastic and plywood and they used plenty of screws. All fifty cabnet soors and drawer fronts and real walnut. All the plywood appears to marine grade.
    A lot of these older rigs were built to last and with some investment and work they will still do the job quiet well. Also you won’t be spending money on lawyers and waiting 6 months to get a dealer to fix what they messed up to begin with. You fix it or find someone to fix it.
    The only problem that irks me are the RV snobs that try to keep out everyone but the new rigs. That is a problem that needs to be fixed.

    The clock for RV warranty needs to only run when the RV is in usable condition.
    If you buy an RV and something under warranty breaks the first month of use the warranty clock stops until it has been repaired to the customers satisfaction. If that takes 2 years so be it. The RV owner still has 11 more months of warranty. That would solve 95% of the problems in the RV industry.

    • @Tugela60

      That is not how warranty works. It is meant to cover manufacturing defects, not wear and tear.

    • @keithmalmberg8395
      @keithmalmberg8395 Місяць тому +1

      @@Tugela60 and that is why the average time for a dealer to get to a warranty repair is almost 6 months. They know that all they need to do is let the RV sit on the back lot and burn the warranty clock. Then all the other warranty items are not covered any longer.
      That and if you read your warranty "wear and tear" are expressly exclude from warranty.
      The RV industry is the only one that has no lemon laws and allows the dealers to run out the warranty clock while "doing" the repair.

    • @Tugela60
      @Tugela60 Місяць тому

      @@keithmalmberg8395 I don't know how it works in the US, but in Europe the warranty is suspended while the goods are being repaired. So if it sits at the dealer for 6 months for repairs, the warranty is extended for 6 months, so there is no point in doing that.
      At least some US states apparently require adding days to the warranty for days in the shop, so I am guessing it applies in the US as well.

    • @keithmalmberg8395
      @keithmalmberg8395 Місяць тому +1

      @@Tugela60 That is NOT how it works here. The clock starts the day you pick it up and stops for nothing. If the dealer can have it sit for 9 months after you take it out once they have burned the warranty and everything is now on the owner. Here they want it to sit.

      @keithmalmberg8395 I don't know about the rest of the states, but tolling definitely applies in California. It is spelled out in civil code 1795.6. The warranty term freezes when you send the item in for warranty repair, and resumes when you get it back.
      I believe that is how it works in federal law as well as per the supreme court.

    Quite an eye-popping result, Alan, the manufacturer ends up paying multiple times what they would have had to pay if they had just agreed to mediate the case earlier! We have been very fortunate, we are on our third RV. The first two were junk. The current one is a Newmar Dutch Star, built in January of 2020, so just before the crappy Covid catastrophes were foisted upon unsuspecting RVers. This coach has been great, a few minor issues, but overall great build quality. I'm sure it helps that we are able to store it at home in a climate-controlled garage. Given that we live in Florida, I wouldn't want to spend as much on an RV that is exposed to the harsh weather conditions here 24/7, 365, although I suppose it's counterintuitive to think that way, since they are supposedly built for that purpose!

    We looked at new models before we bought ours two years ago, after hearing so many horror stories, I’m so glad we opted to but used for our first RV. We spent $10k and bought a 2000 Four Winds Infinity Class A in great shape with 53k miles on it. We have put a new roof on it, a new generator in it, re-sealed all the windows, put new shocks on it, and it’s a fantastic unit! I wouldn’t give this thing up for the world! It’s paid for, is reliable, and we don’t even have any slides on it for them to go bad. They can take these expensive newer units and shove them! If we want to upgrade some things- we do it as we go along!

      The issue is that with the low volumes manufacturers produce it means that at current prices you are pretty much guarenteed to get junk.
      These things are hand made, so if you want quality you are going to be paying supercar prices. A well built well engineered quality vehicle is going to be approaching what something like a Ferrari costs. This is something that most people posting here don't seem to understand.

    We are on our 14th rv in 32 years. I can say that we've not really had any issues other than, what I would call, the standard higgeldy-piggeldy items. Our current is a 2020.5 Heartland Big Country 4011ERD. We've been all over the midwest, the west and spend winters deep into Mexico. My gripes are NOT Heartland specific, but mfg. wide. POOR insulation in the belly. The last 2, a Montana & the current, it just got to where I took off the belly pan and replaced the insulation with some good Corning pink R7 and re-installed the coroplast. The second are the poor mattresses. We just give them to a secondhand store and put in a quality Sealy. Last is, again, not Heartland specific but a supplier. The water valve made by Anderson. Ours is the newer style, brass. 9 months it fills the on board tank when set to 'city'. No 'jiggling' or turning will stop it. Being a retired plumber, I took it off. ZERO way to do ANY maintenance on it. Heartland sent a new one under warranty (always had good service from them). I installed it. 9 months later it again does the same thing. I call Anderson. " Oh you have to turn the valve one direction all the time" (ZERO notes in the booklet saying this) "but we'll send you another". Installed it. 6 months later it again does it, even always turning it one direction. This time, despite saying 5 YEAR WARRANTY they want me to PAY for a new one, PAY to send the old one back and IF they find it defective, I'd be reimbursed for the valve only. Well I just put my years of plumbing together and re-configured the whole shebang and I'll not give Anderson ANY good lip service. 2 years on my renovation with no trouble at all.

    Buy an older quality RV. Do your research. When I bought my first, we went to RV Parks and asked people about there coaches. We toured factories we research LAWSUTS, etc. we ended up with a used Dutch Starr DP. Spartan/Cummins. Toured full time for 4 yrs. NO issues of any consequence. No break downs and no slide out issues NONE. It was a 1999 38’ one large slide. Next coach was more recent. Purchased a yr2000 Dutch Star Spartan/Cummins ( if it ain’t broke, dont fix it). Same results. Now have owned it for 7 yrs, 5 full time. Again NO significant issues, no break downs, no slide out issues at all! It’s now 25 yrs old! 50K mi. Do most maintenance myself. So yeah, oldie buy goodie. Buy pre DEF. Get it looked at by someone experienced/professional. And I can STILL call Newmar for help or advice.

    I've been around awhile and I have seen a lot of changes in the RV industry. There were a lot of great campers in the 60s and 70s that were bought up or went bankrupt in the early to late 80s. Being a RV mechanic in those days you had to go the extra mile to replace parts with not the exact fit part that came from a different manufacturer. Then RVs became more complex with slide outs and second bathroom's and more electronics. But there are fewer manufacturers today in the industry than even in the 90s and early 2000s. The industry is just a very few huge companies manufacturing under different names and the consumer doesn't realize this when they buy their RV. Thank God for these platforms and others that help the general public ( when someone really wants to do research on what they are buying) to get into the coach and really look it over before purchasing it because poor slide mechanisms and poor fit and finish are not things that are easily fixed after a coach goes up and down the road.

    2021 Tiffin Phaeton 37 BH had 75 plus punch list items! Worst purchase ever. People don’t consider what you mention, you can’t use it yet you are paying registration, insurance, storage space and some pay on credit! Spent first year in a service center, cost us over $1,000 in fuel alone as closest warranty center was 150 miles away. Our bedroom slide from day 1 was problematic, 3 years later finally a new service center called out Lippert who clearly seen the slide hole was cut too big! We could see daylight out the slide edges but were told it didn’t have a seal so that was “added” then new motor, tracks etc! Now Tiffin is refusing to pay the $1500 cost to fix it. It works consistently now but for 2 years we never put out our bedroom slide. There’s more things they never fixed and we just got wire out driving it to service and started fixing stuff like drawer rails, bolts that hold down the sofa, filling in the huge hole behind bathroom cabinet were tons of road soot would cover the bathroom & bedroom, and more! 😭😭💔

    This must have been an old case considering Gulfstream stopped Class A production in 2012, they still build B's & C's and pull behinds and are generally known for a quality product, I've owned a Class A for a decade with zero issues other than simply items manufactured by others that wore out from use. Another question why and how did a "federal arbitrator" become involved in this discussion, was the issue accepted in federal court? Considering the aftermath of Katrina and thousands of people attempting a Class action over "offgassing in FEMA trailers", the 5th U.S. Circuit said they can file individually but there was not going to be a Class Action. I'm curious as to how the federal courts and arbitrator was involved in this suit.
