The beauty of Reigen, apart from his actual beauty, is that though he operates his business as a conman would, he still delivers what his customers are seeking: Peace of mind. Most of his customers aren't actually bothered by spirits or psychic phenomenon, they have some anxiety or discomfort they've projected onto the supernatural realm. Reigen doesn't try to disprove their beliefs, instead he engages with them and through his spirit medium act gets them to relax and unknot what's bothering them. It reminds me of nothing more than Headology from Terry Pratchett's Discworld: A Psychologist with a patient who sees a monster will convince them the monster's not there. A headologist will give them a big stick so they'll be safe. That fits Reigen's MO perfectly. And then for the rare case of actual ghosts, there's Mob.

I remember when the finale aired, there were shonen fight junkies saying how it was lame and how Mob should have lashed out. It made me realize that some people really didn’t bother to think about the narrative presented to them for 11 whole episodes. Like I understand expecting Mob to fight back, we are conditioned to do so, but I can’t see how someone could think it’s bad to have expectations subverted to do something arguably far more entertaining and narratively rich. But ultimately it’s fine cause it seems most people understood the point and even for the few that don’t, they could still enjoy the show in their own way.

Ironically, One's personal story would fit right in with a standard shonen. A go-getter with a dream, who despite lacking the conventional skills his field prefers manages to break in anyway with a combination of hard work, unconventional talents and luck and eventually becomes one of the most beloved people in his line of work.

    • @spoony8497
      @spoony8497 Рік тому +14

The reason it doesn't directly fall in line with the standard Shonen, though, is how it both frames and subverts common Shonen tropes and clichés. sometimes turning them on their head, and sometimes (such as the case of mobs message to toichiro at the end of S2) playing directly into them. However, the difference is the context. While the average Shonen protagonist might spew the same story every single time they enter a fight, mob has to plan around them and adapt to their personality. So his approach is always different. which is also what makes the line "you are the protagonist of your own story" so much more impactful when compared to other shows with the exact same moral.

It’s really inspiring after looking into it. I don’t believe I’m the most talented at art, I can draw still images just fine but consistently drawing the same characters in different poses is where I struggle. I’m virtually talentless. ONE proves that if you draw with enough balls (that is to say, you draw with enough confidence in spite of your shortcomings), nobody outside of a vocal obnoxious minority is going to care, so long as your story is enough to make up for it.
My relationship with Mob Psycho is the same with One Piece. Both are shows that I really didn’t care for the artstyle when I watched it, however the incredible stories more than made up for it, even warmed me up to the art presented.

He said the deep philosophy was something he discusses with friends and this relatable to y’all and profound ain’t that big a deal then Naruto says work hard and friendship and he’s like wow great great. Something about hxh rubes him wrong. The series teaches people that they are not special despite having some ability that says otherwise and helps combat the ego that comes with it and also teaches that no matter how hard you try you can't control the things around you. I knew I (and everyone else) had good taste.

I havent seen this anime but i'm certainly gonna watch it. A note on the music: when Marc played Mobs theme and described the music in general, it was instantly familiar to me and hearing that Kenji Kawai was responsible for the soundtrack made perfect sense. In places it sounds a lot like the the original Ghost in the Shell which Kawai also was responsible for. Just for that i can't wait to see Mob Psycho.

Mob Psycho 100 is my favorite anime of all time. Unbelievable animation and an extremely likable cast of characters that would each be my favorite in almost any other series. The Body Improvement Club in particular always brings a huge smile to my face when they show up. They're just such good boys. It's a kind of positive masculinity that's so rare to see in media, and especially in anime.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Some people tend to dismiss this anime and refuse to watch it because of its unique different art style which always disappoints me, because they haven't even watched it yet. I hate the fact they judge it because of it's art style calling it ugly.
literally recommended it to a friend of mine, called it ugly and complained why they didn't change the art style like in one punch man... (I can't tell you how much I held back going all out to throw hands with him.🙂)
But yeah, I really enjoyed the video, I really liked how you reviewed each aspect about this anime. This is easily one of my favorite anime where each episode gave me lots of entertainment and attachment to the characters!

His story telling is amazing, that's for sure. As an aspiring mangka myself, his work proves that you don't need a fantastical skill to draw...just the ability to tell a good story in order to achieve those goals. Everyone has their own style and even if it's stick figures...if a good story can be told, then you can reach your goals.

At first, I played this video intending to use it as background ambience while I got some work done. It was great fun listening to your jokes and analyses and going "Yeah!!! That thing!!!! He put it in words!!" And of course, loved that you highlighted all the reasons why MP100 as an anime stands out so much from the rest and why its unconventional story is so enrapturing and works as well as it does.
But once you reached the finale of the season, the Claw infiltration, I was completely hooked. I literally dropped everything and had to sit down and watch the last 25 minutes with all my attention because you absolutely nailed the emotional weight of those moments. As someone who struggles with concise articulation, it is so so cathartic being able to hear someone else put your thoughts together.
The fantastic break-down of the different parts of MP100 from its production team, the storyboard artists, character designers, mentioning renowned JP animators, pulling interviews with ONE-sensei and even the fun little details like the Seamoons -- it all just makes for a wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable video essay. I mean, there were so many things I learned and was reminded of! It gave me a lot of insight too on *how* the anime was produced.
I love that you can hear how much you enjoy this gem of a show. It's obvious that you put a lot of care and attention into your reviews and that's super admirable to me. Glad I had this video recommended to me and I can't wait to see more from this channel!

  • @loganw3629

Wow! This dropped the week that I finished the show for the first time, what luck!
That being said, watching your videos always gives me a fresh perspective that I really need. I'm not a literary analyst, nor do I understand how to critically analyze shows, books, manga, etc.. in the ways that you do. Every time I watch one of these videos, it give a nice, thorough view in which I never have seen shows such as Mob Psycho 100. Getting to watch these videos and gain an understanding that I never had to begin with makes me appreciate not only the material, but the medium and those within the anime world. That's what I love so much about these videos, is that no matter how much I feel like I understand something, you are always there to give me that deeper meaning that can turn a series from something I would consider just good, to something I consider great.
I really loved this video, and I can't wait to see what you have to say about the next two seasons.

Never actually seen this show before, but I do like your reviews... I enjoyed listening to you talk about Bleach, as an example, even if it didn't seem like the kind of thing I'd want to watch personally. Started watching this video and got about half-ish way through before I was like 'Okay- I want to FINALLY sit down and watch the rest myself and actually enjoy it as it develops.'
VERY glad I made that decision. Man, what a good show. What a good review. I love love LOVE how it resolves; Reigen realizing just the kind of people he's dealing with and deciding they should just get out of there, is such an incredible moment- the way it all seems to be building up to the traditional anime explosion of power when a character's pushed to their breaking point- only for Reigen to step in and affirm that Mob can just run, that he doesn't have to and *shouldn't* fight is such an incredible, powerful subversion. And the fact that the final climactic 'fight' doesn't involve the kids at all, that none of them do anything, that it's Reigen, the adult here taking things into his own hands and giving these overgrown children a talking to. It's an incredible message and theming. I don't think it's a coincidence that as the lighting changes and the harsher lines and wrinkles on the leader disappears, that it leaves him looking like a big baby throwing a tantrum. I fully understand the hype of this show now, and I'm looking forward to checking out the rest, and seeing your reviews of it!

i really adore the direction you've taken with your reviews lately. covering the production details, staff interviews, and the names behind the reason why the animation looks the way it does. it's so informative and is very good for exposure. people always say that "it's good", but not often do they ask "who, and what made it good?"
im not saying that every person needs to follow this mindset. most people watch animation for enjoyment of course, so do i. but with reviews, i always like it when it covers the source material, adaptation, end result, and the team behind it. it's very educational and can lead to more interest in these artists works. after you mentioned the character designer for Mob Psycho, i literally got the urge to look through a list of show he's worked on as char. designer. it's always great to know why it looks good, and who did it. so thank you
stuff like this 11:15 is just amazing. the definition of creative vision, literally. i had no idea he went into the show with that mindset. and thank you for covering the composer as well! wow!! i didn't even know that fucking instrument existed lmao!
