    There's a good painter. Mark can lay it down like glass flowing out ahead perfectly of the wet line without hardly looking or slowing down. 👈🐱👍

    What type of compressor was used?

    • @FishBumpTV
      @FishBumpTV  4 місяці тому +1

      The boat yard we were working at has a large on site compressor. But a good 5 to 7.5 hp compressor with a decent size tank will do the job. Thanks for watching!

    Would you paint rather than re-gel coat if chaging color? I picked up an 87 trawler that previous owners painted bulwarks badly. Was thinking of chemical stripping and re-gel coating. Thanks for any help. Great videos by the way. Also, why would you not use a 2 gal. Pressure pot to paint something that large?
    Are you old enough to remember Ernie Lee, the old weatherman from the 70's? His tag after the weather was, get out there and go fishing, cause it's good fur ya.. good times.

      Most people use awlgrip paint on larger boats in our area. Other 2 part paint systems can also work well. You can use gelcoat, but it can be labor intensive if you want it to be a glossy finish. I will be making some gelcoat option related videos soon, so stay tuned!

    Well done on your coverage and mentioning work outside after a good rain and overcast weather is a Huge help! I’ve been Autobody since I was 14 and a Combination collision,frame , restoration,fiberglass and painting from straight enamel,acrylic enamel, bc cc urethane & epoxy. 😂 I m 71 13:19 year’s young no and I’m doing some restoration on my 1987 Marathon cabin cruiser I bought New In Ohio raised all 3 of my kids on it every weekend on Lake Erie . Boats are boats and who hasn't as a young man thought about sailing around the world in a sailboat. I know I have.
    I'm a power boater but I enjoyed the video. It's tough spray painting out in the open. I guess you had a portable compressor that could put out enough dry air. Good job!

      @FishBumpTV  4 місяці тому

      I agree! This one would make a great boat for someone wanting to do some serious sailing! I am a powerboat guy also, but I can definitely see some really great benefits to this type of boat. Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!

    So ya "MARK'd" the Mark's on the family unit.... lol, interesting products. You guys still using lead paints aren't you, I mean that's
    what I thought we used in the early 70's. That's a pretty big job, glad ya'll got some help ! Appreciate the video. peace

      Your brother's arm looked tired from here.... my body's too F#@K'd Up to do too much so I know I'd need to hire some help
      out in that humid heat. Yeah man, all that work is tough & being able to shoot video, then edit things is another skill-set
      most don't realize. Fun watching & your poor brother is exhausted....lol, did he want you to paint & you said,,, Umm, I've
      got to shoot the video & it's your boat? I'm messing w/ you guys & I want to see the bottom paint before you drop her in.

      Haha, enjoyed your comment! Yep, Mark was pretty whooped by the time we were done! It is definitely a 2 or 3 man job for sure on a boat like that. I did some spraying, but mostly mixing paint and moving scaffolding for Mark. The Tayana is His baby, so he was definitely the lead painter that day! Thanks for watching!

      yeah, that's definitely a 3-4 man job OR a pair of arse-kickin' pro's which I ain't one ! Back in the day I was a one man
      wrecking crew but I thank you guys for the entertainment w/ a side of education. KUDO's & I'll see ya'll very soon.

    I really don't think this conveys the magnitude of this job. This was a lot of work. I have painted enough large signs to know that Mark was worn out afterwards. I don't know how his shoulder held out. It turned out great. Good job.

I'm looking forward to your hardtop build. I have a catamaran that I want to build a hard bimini for. Life long painter here
      There are 2 ways to make paint stick
      Mechanical bond and chemical bond
      Mechanical is like he's doing sand with 220 so paint can grip the surface which MUST be done on an old surface or fully cured new paint BUT let's say you were priming then several top coats you would sand the bare surface then apply primer and between coats and top coats there's a window usually anywhere from a few hrs to 12 or so that you can just keep applying coats and topcoats without sanding
      Why... because the first coat is still soft enough for the next coats thinner/resins to bite into the first coat and bond themselves chemically
      So in closing it's WAY easier once you start painting to keep going till it's done so you don't need to sand between layers

    • @FishBumpTV
      @FishBumpTV  4 місяці тому +2

      Thanks so much, glad you are enjoying the videos! No sanding or prep between coats as long as you keep the process moving along. Basically about 30 minutes between coats. Awlgrip is a 1 to 1 mix ratio, and is very durable, but a little more difficult to work. Awlcraft is 2 to 1 mix ratio and is designed to be buffed out if debris or runs occur in the paint. In our area most people paint rather than regelcoat, especially on large boats. We will have hardtop videos coming soon for you, so stay tuned. I appreciate you watching and best of luck with your boat projects!

    • @FishBumpTV
      @FishBumpTV  4 місяці тому +2

      On smaller parts, and on smaller boats many people go with gelcoat. Gelcoat requires a lot of sanding and polishing to make it shine after its applied though. For most larger boats in our area, Awlgrip is by far the preferred paint system. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
