Thanks for this down to earth “Rolling and Tipping” video as it really helped me understand why you tip: It’s to get rid of all those pesky tiny bubbles that form on the surface. This is the first video which has specifically mentioned the little tiny bubbles that were appearing in my two pack linear polyurethane top coat when rolling. Just for the record, I was using an Australian manufactured polyurethane called Norglass. I thought I could just roll and it on. WRONG. I subsequently got frustrated when I noticed all these minuscule bubbles forming. Fortunately, it was just the first top coat so I think I have been able to sand them out using 400 grit wet and dry. The bubbles, interestingly enough, we’re not forming everywhere, just in a few spots. I don’t know why that that was. Anyway, you solved the mystery for me. You were the first youtube video -and I’ve watched many- to mention this this fact. Ie. Tipping is necessary when you use a roller to get rid of all the tiny surface bubbles that look like they could be specks of dust. They are just that small bubbles but that are not dust they are just bubbles which can be “tipped” out with a brush. Cheers and Thanks Again Sandy B Coochiemudlo Island Australia
Leon ! Wow! Great video, would love to see products used. I learned so much, I'm going to follow this and take on my own project, thank you for helping me get started!
Video veramente ben fatto e interessantissimo tecnica semplice ma efficace e il risultato e perfetto, grazie x la dimostrazione e complimenti. solo una domanda. .a che temperatura esterna solitamente vernici..?..grazie.
Hi John..on this video i used the Omega "SPALTER " brush this type of brush is perfectly made for tipping, but one of my preferred brush to use is the Corona "EUROPA" brush...one of the best.
Planning to repaint with Awlgrip, hull white but local yard will not spray; only roll & tip. When both are done by top painters should there be noticeable difference ?
Leon, I have watched your video no then rolled a section of my Hatteras with AwlGrip. I can see brush marks in the final finish? Did I not use enough reducer? Any help would be welcomed
@@jefferydavis3194 That is too windy, try doing it in the morning when the temperature is nice and cool, if you are doing it outside without any protection from the wind you need to do it when there is hardly any wind even just for a couple of hours just to give time for the paint to flow.
Roll and then tip the first coat...leave to cure for at least 2 days or more the better, then sand it with 400 grit sandpaper ,then roll and tip again for the second and final coat.
Great video. Do you have a keep a wet edge through out? It seemed like you mentioned you did one area and then another day did an adjoining area? Or did you need to do the whole side at once and keep a wet edge going?
yahh always keep a wet edge, this one i did the one side at once...but you can always plan your job,if you think it is too big and you have an area to do a cut that is not so obvious..do it.
Awesome job, subscribed ! I have a couple questions because I'm new to painting. I am going to be painting my 21' mako center console boat . What brand foam roller and brush did you use ? Also how many coats did you do and how long did you wait before coats ? Lastly I want to paint my boat in ice blue awlgrip. Other than buying a gallon of the awlgrip do I need to buy a hardener or anything to mix into the paint ? Thanks in advance.
When we were in Florida the foam i was using is the Redtree 9 inch yellow foam roller, good for big surfaces, you can use smaller foam roller for smaller job,any foam roller that can handle urethane paint is good as long as it is thin nap...two coats is recommended,on this project of mine the whole surface is one coat but the repairs is two coats, and yes aside from the base paint ,you need the brushing converter and the brushing reducer.
@@tylerthomas3744 as for the brush i usually use the Corona Europa brushes,i love those brush, but it's very hard to get it here in Spain,...on this particular project i thinned my paint 20 percent, you can thinned it to 30 percent if the weather is a bit warm..and i usually wait at least 3 days before i sand again for the second coat.

Nice boss
Great video Leon :) wher in the world are you based? You are the first I have seen using the brush so many times after rolling
Thanks...we are based in Palma de Mallorca at the moment.
In cooler climates I plan to use fast reducer will that affect rolling on tipping, I only have a small surface to do.
Nice video. What kind of bush are you using?

@@leoncaputolan Thanks Leon :)

Not really..it all depends of how good the roll and tip application, and how old is the original paint job.
Your a man of great skill! I'm wondering what thinning ratio you use. I will be applying paint at 65°F and 65% humidity.
on that temperature i usually thin/reduce around 20 to 25 percent...
Salamat po !👍👍
You're welcome 👍👍

You don't want to used too much reducer either...maybe it's too hot during the time you were painting or a bit windy?
@@leoncaputolan thank you for the response. Yes the wind was blowing about 15kts, so I will make sure the next time I paint it is still.

What type of brush as to hairs ?
Good info, great video. Question; Do you only have to do one coat if you roll and tip?
Two coats is always recommended for roll and tip.
@@leoncaputolan Do you tip after the first coat? Or do you save the tipping process for the 2nd coat?
