    its not just software engineering, i feel the same way for my first job. Ultimately what I absolutely hate about work is the commute, 45min-hour on average. Its so life draining, i get sleepy and start dosing off on the way back, i get home absolutely exhausted and don't feel like talking to anyone.

      Completely understand. I had about 45 minute commute, but if there was traffic, it was over an hour easy. What a waste of time honestly. I really think we as a society need to rethink commuting and car usage in general.

    You're introspecting about the 1 year of a job in tech. I'm figuring out the path to a meaningful life after 27 years of the tech rat race.

      What's the retirement plan after all these years? I think woodworking, painting, writing or any other art could be good options.
      I'm just 2 years into tech... But it seems that these questions and feelings will keep being present if I don't use the tech skills to do something meaningful instead of working for other people.

    Same thing happened to me at 2 years in. When Covid went down we had to work remotely and I’ve been remote since. Life seriously improved after that, and I’m even more productive now. Win win

    Well said. The mental part of feeling alone is really what is so hard. When you start a new job you have no relationship w anyone. The time you need others the most is the time when it’s most uncomfortable to ask for help. I relate to that completely.

      Yeah definitely. Reaching out on teams can be weird sometimes especially when there is a delay between responses

    Honestly, I'm not sure why the cubicle situation doesn't bother me. To me, it's just not a big deal at all. It's something I'm adjusted too. I like working on a computer. I was a music producer and spent a lot of time in the box. I do think doing other things outside of work that aren't on your computer is definitely necessary as well. Remote, is definitely a priority for me as well. I don't think I would mind working in an office. But, working remote is definitely a God send. Being able to pick up your laptop and to go work in a co-working space, or cafe, or at a beach or something like that is definitely special.

      For sure. Honestly I think the commute was the worst

      @@StephenSamuelsen Yeah, thats the one thing I wouldn't tolerate. I live in central Connecticut and have turned down multiple offers to even interview at companies that are in NYC or deeper in the NYC metros.

    Thanks for your honesty! Sorry you had to deal with that as your first job. I've been fortunate to have never felt this way in any job, remote or on site, in 16 years.

    First world problems. But I've learned to literally walk away from the keyboard for a large chunk of every workday. Regularly, a pernicious bug resolves a mile down the trail, or architecture comes together, or whatever. I stop to take notes over the course of 7 miles.

    • @StephenSamuelsen
      @StephenSamuelsen  2 місяці тому +2

      Yeah for sure. I usually get out and bike in the mornings for a while on trails

    I've been working for 8 months now. My first job as a software engineer, I did really good, even got promoted to Tech Lead.
    But I noticed since I left school, my mind is like calling for help, so I always take as much breaks as I need and if I am working on something that doesn't require to collaborate with someone, I go remote even for an entire week. I realised also how important it is to workout, go outside etc. These things I did not care when I was at school.
    Great video, I subscribe =D

    So you got saved from the hell of the first job by switching to remote as your own approaches to the problem were insufficient. Only then did you get perspective that the freedom you gained is worth so much that you want to keep it at all cost.

    Sounds like you've matured much faster than most people who get wrapped in the rat race. Listen to your body. If it's steering you away from the 9-5, do not ignore the signals.

    • @StephenSamuelsen
      @StephenSamuelsen  2 місяці тому +1

      Cost of living increases make it difficult I think to listen to the signals

    I will take the A-level final exams in 4 days. I want to study software engineering at uni but many people talk about not being able to find a job and I am honestly scared for my future. Do you think software engineering is still worth studying?

    • @StephenSamuelsen
      @StephenSamuelsen  2 місяці тому +1

      It definitely is worth studying. Just be sure to do side projects and pick a backend technology that is widely used. Create some CRUD applications, make a portfolio website, experiment with some embedded systems programming, and write some papers/articles on topics and you’ll be good. Best to find what type of programming you like the best
