This poem, written more than 2500 years ago can maybe teach us something about the meaning of life. This is Homer's Iliad an epic poem about the Trojan War between the Achaeans and the Trojans. While boy Greece and Troy battle over Helen of Troy, Homer consistently suggests that there may be other reasons for the combatants to persist in this conflict. This is where the book seems to speak to us about issues like mortality, glory, and the worth or value of human life. In this conflict between Menelaus and Paris, Hector and Achilles, we can learn things about what it means to be human.

Wonderful distillation. (guess I should now go read the poem!) Your discussion makes me think of the song 'Brothers in Arms' by Dire Straits. If you don't know it, the song is 'The lliad' (not literally of course, but in spirit). It is hauntingly beautiful. [sorry, my second rock song reference of the evening.....but really; great songs ARE poetry]

Thanks for watching! And thanks for reminding me that my favourite Dire Straits song is "Romeo and Juliet," which I am now listening to on repeat! 😄

What about the concept of Arete? Surely that has to be a major motivational factor of the characters, given the historical context? I ask, because that is the reason this book has been sitting on my bedstand's "to-read" pile for the last few weeks : )

Suggestion! You should have an affiliate link to the book you’re discussing. 😊
If you can make the channel even slightly profitable you might be able to justify more videos/attention even during the busy times!
