- If anyone has any ideas for improvements I can make to how I use the OM-1's AF, please do post in the comments!
Sorry for the delay between the last video and this one - I actually have a few already recorded but haven't had time to edit them yet! There'll likely be another gap before the next video now but then I should hopefully be back on schedule after that, as well as have something from an exciting new location! (depending on the UK rail strikes)

Thank you for the tips, I wasn't ware the object detection was available on the super control panel :)
I am new to Olympus coming from Panasonic G9. Still learning despite having the camera for 6 months. The super control panel is a terrific time saver. I love it.
Thanks for this video. I've watched just about every OM1 video I can find on UA-cam even since before the camera came out and yet I still learned probably at least three things from your video here that I'd never even heard of before I especially like to learning that racking focus from near to far is much quicker and more effective than far to near and that you can map the manual focus to kick in tied to the ring itself, I'm definitely going to try that one. Thanks for your videos and I hope you continue them as I find them valuable!
In my opinion the largest megafailure with om-1 is that you can´t change focus method (for example with a programed button) without stoping the c-af (without lifting the finger from the af-back button)! The result is that you loose the tracking/subject tracking during tenths of a second when you change, for an example, between subjekt tracking to single point c-af / multipoints c-af. Almost all other brands can do this while AF is active and are capable to configure dual back button focus with different AFsettings
If you, or some else know how to do this or how to set up a dual back button focus with different AF- set ups please give the answer.
Thanks usefull tips just got my Om1👍
Nice video! You’re not wrong about Panasonic. Fix the AF and they would really have something. I went form the Panny G9 to a Canon R6 because of the AF. that was nearly 2 years ago. I really prefer M43 because of the size but until the OM-1 AF was just too much of an issue for me. I have spent the last several months trying to decide between the OM-1 and the Canon R7. I am using the PL 100-400mm on the OM-1 for now and the RF 100-500mm on the R7. Most of the time the IQ on the R7 is better. I think is mostly down to the lens. I do have one of the better copies of the 100-400mm but it’s not usually as sharp as the Canon. However the OM-1 will focus in terrible light. The Canon AF degrades quickly when I start losing the light. I do get the occasional photo with the OM-1 that has great sharpness but it’s not consistent. The OM-1 will focus consistently on Hummingbirds in flight. The Canon is very inconsistent with them. To me the biggest advantage of the R7 over the OM-1 is the dual back button AF. Being able to use a single point with one back button and animal eye detection with the other is just too convenient. I don’t think there is really a solid winner between the two cameras. The R7 EVF is not great and the rolling shutter is pretty bad. Canon does have more bird lenses. I plan to try the 300m F4 Pro soon hoping that the IQ will improve a bit with that. Even if I wanted to spend the money on the 150-400 Pro it is too heavy and too hard to get. Certainly OM Systems could update add dual back button AF with firmware but I doubt it will happen. Both could really use a 3rd control dial. So, for now, I am stuck with 2 cameras for birds. I like both of them. I still have the R6 (thanks to a deadbeat bidder on eBay) but I miss the 800mm equivalent reach I get with the R7. Nice shoes.
The 300mm f4 is in a different league to the PL100-400 on the OM-1. Try it then re visit your IQ. I think it may change your mind. I agree with your point on two-button BBF which favors Canon though. I find that if I shoot 50 consecutive frames with the OM-1 for no apparent reason it will drop 3 or 4 frames in the sequence then the rest are sharp again. Another thing I've noticed is the AF finds the bird at greater distance than my R5 could. The R7 just had too many compromises and as you mention the rolling shutter is pretty grim. That finished me with Canon. I was looking for a mirrorless APS-C version of the R5 and Canon delivered a 90D plus.
@@stevemurnan1702 Yeah. I am headed to Canada tomorrow and tried to rent the 300mm F4 Pro. It wasn’t returned in time by the previous renter and I had to catch a plane today so I don’t have it. I absolutely agree with everything you say about the R7. I would have been happy to pay for an APS-C flagship. Instead I got an entry level wildlife camera. It’s a solid camera for the money but it could have been so much more.
Thanks for the information here. I am relieved it's not just me having difficulties with OM-1 C-AF, which seems less reliable to me than on the EM-1 Mark II C-AF. In low light it's unable to lock on to birds with bird detect either on or off; and the camera will often detect a bird but C-AF will not follow. I've had some good results with birds in flight, but for a bird or animal on the ground, a small focus region centered on the head still works best. Your suggestion to pre-focus closer than the bird might help, I'll try it. Thanks again.
Have you tried the pre-mf function before setting the focus limiter on the camera. It well show you what it thinks is the distance to the focus point. Which you can then use on the camera. Only use it on a prime lens though, with a zoom it can vary wildly.
That's an interesting idea - I'll try experimenting with that
I am using the AF limiter and its working pretty well. Also the peaking. Cant complaining.
Great little vid. One thing I find with the auto face detection is if your wearing glasses it struggles. Find this more with my Panasonics than the OM-1. Also don't like the recent update 1.3 as has bugs in the auto focus and producing image magnification and random images. Hopefully they will sort this out.

Thanks for the video! I really appreciate your honst and solid description of pros and cons! This really deserves more attention! What kind of clip do you use? I just bought your backpack, looked perfect to me - seems to be underrated like your videos! :)
Thanks! I hope you like the bag 😀 I've been using the Peak Design Capture Clip, which is largely good, and it fits well enough on the Tenba's strap padding. I don't find it fits in as comfortable a place on the Shimoda bag as it does on the Tenba, so I ended up getting one of their pads to hook it over my belt instead. Which still isn't quite as comfortable, to be honest 😅
@@robert_may haha it's so hard to find matching products. There's room for development. I use a Cosyspeed Camslinger, but it works just with my Nana 100-300, the 300 won't fit. I use the Leica 200 f2.8 and need something for quick access. I'll check it out as well!
@@mr.banana5967 The other thing I use with the Tenba is the Black Rapid Backpack Camera Sling (www.blackrapid.com/backpack-breathe/), which is great for dangling the longer lens off _but_ it's somewhat more annoying if you want to take the bag off as you have to unhook it first 😅
Nice video. I never had the AF problems with the G9 not sure what is going awry there. Like the jacket where did you get it please?
Unfortunately I received the jacket for free from my dad and it has no label in it that I can find that says what the manufacturer is 😅
Which shoes did you get?
Meindl Comfort Fit Activo GTX. Very comfy, and the insoles aren’t a crime against humanity unlike my Meindl boots 😆
I will stick with my EM-1 mk iii ,not attracted by the om-1 in all honesty ,,,footnote ,met you at slimbridge and you kindly let me try out your om-1.
