I've been meaning to get back up to mid-Wales to further explore the area surrounding the Elan Valley for ages, but for some reason it has taken me years to do so. I had a bunch of soon-to-expire Kodak Gold and a spare day and decided this was finally the time!
It didn't go entirely to plan.
Completely minor correction from the video: the A470 doesn't actually run all the way to North Wales. Shows how often I go up that way 🙈

TTArtisan sent over their 500mm prime lens for me to test out, so I took it for a day out at Slimbridge Wetlands to figure out who it's for. And if you're wondering how long it took me to sync the swan to the music: too long. In this video I take a look at how suitable it is, and how it performs, for wildlife photography, wildlife videography, and 35mm film photography. Buy the TTArtisan 500mm ...

Is the Sigma fp L the Ideal Landscape Camera?
Переглядів 5 тис.5 місяців тому
Sigma loaned me the fp L, a tiny 61 megapixel camera, to try out. So I took it to the Bannau Brycheiniog, which I think I'm somewhat mispronouncing repeatedly throughout this video (also neuadd). It turns out that hiking for hours in each direction means I forget things, and I didn't end up with any particularly interesting photos anyway, but I did at least take a good one the week before! Which is the better affordable L-mount 50mm? - Sigma 50mm f/2 DG DN vs Panasonic LUMIX 50mm f/1.8

Sigma sent over their 50mm f/2 DG DN prime for L-Mount for me to test, so I decided to compare it to the Panasonic 50mm f/1.8 lens that I already own. This video was filmed on the Nikon Z6III, which caused me some problems; not only the issues covered in my last two videos, but the various AF and exposure oddities throughout this one 😅 This is also why it's somewhat cobbled together and missing...
A Major Flaw in Video Footage from my Nikon Z6III

The Nikon Z6III is doing something very weird in its video modes, and this seems to be tied either to the sensor or in how they're adjusting exposure - it's exhibiting a constant flickering/flashing effect. The Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 for Nikon Z mount has problems
A very interesting video. I presently have the Lumix S 20-60mm & also the Lumix S 70-300mm which I often take out together on day trips. This is quite a heavy combination & I often substitute the longer zoom by taking out my Lumix S 85mm but in a lot of circumstances this lens is not really long enough. If I were to replace the 70-300mm by the 28-200mm I feel that I would need a lens to fill the 20-28mm gap. My current thinking is that the Lumix S 18mm prime would be a good but relatively expensive option, for the 10-15% occasions when I would need a shorter length lens. I could of course replace the 85mm lens with the slightly longer Lumix S 100mm macro lens and use that on days out with the 20-60mm lens, but then I would be back to probably preferring my original Lumix S 24-105mm F/4 option, which like you, I always felt was never quite long enough! Well I suppose I could always get a 40+ mega pixel camera, & crop.....
Just found your channel very interesting
How do you put it in electronic shooter mode to click for so long?
If I remember correctly, it’s Continuous H * (or extended), and then you need to manually set the camera to electronic shutter mode from inside one of the custom settings menus 🤔
@robert_may You have to over expose by 2 stops but not with iso you have to let more light in the sensor either through shutter speed, adding lights or Aperture. You might want to use a faster lens with a nd filter and over expose and then drop the exposure until your are 1 to 2 stops over. 2 stops over give the best results. Hope that helps.
Nice advice
a very good video. thank you
I wish you well. You might find it worthwhile investigating an anti-inflammatory diet (regarding concentration issues).
When you talk about the lenses especially in the end make it more obvious which is which, it's not clear at all.
Thanks for your video! Its good to see someone testing in my same light conditions (the UK is not the sunniest country). You got yourself another subscriber.
Haha thanks! I have noticed some companies like Canon sending their dark telephoto lenses to the Australian channels for testing first 🙈 The difference is quite stark compared to shooting in never-ending overcastness!
Holy cow. No bueno. Thanks for comparing to the S5iiX. Much appreciated. Staggering difference. Will stick with my S5iiX setup as I do a lot of low-light events. Thanks!
I honestly don't know where the fp L is better than the a7cr
A hopeful tune is exactly what I need these days. Many Thanks.
Version 5 finally fixes the curves produced during volume deformation, and imho, this is the most interesting feature when using bellow 21mm super wide angle lenses. We're finally going to use this regularly :)
Since you posted your video 10 months ago, hopefully you got your lens fixed or they sent you a new one. It is an outstanding lens to have in your arsenal. LOL! I 100% understand and agree with you about the button on the bottom. I have it attached to my Z9 as well, and use it to photograph pro hockey (and other pro sports) and my forefinger knuckle hit it all the time too... until I got a lens collar (boot) for it. Why this very expensive lens didn't come WITH a collar is beyond my understanding since Tamron's 70-200 2.8 lens weighs about the same (I shoot only Tamron lenses) and the 70-200 came with one. The boot I got is the FOTGA Arca Swiss Lens Tripod Mount Ring Collar Ring for Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD E Mount Z Mount Lens Model A058. I'll try to put the link in this comment (it's not an affiliate link). I shoot like you do with the boot rotated downward so that the tripod connection is in the palm of my hand. When the boot is attached to the A058, it lifts the Z9 high enough where you don't touch the bottom button. I believe the other buttons are positioned where they are for when you rotate the camera to shoot vertically (some of us still do that the old way even thought there's a grip), but that's just a theory of mine. Anyway, the boot definitely solved the irritating problem of the bottom custom button. Your other concerns do sound like you got a bad unit, or yours is/was in need of an update. Mine doesn't have the vignetting or manual focus problems you mentioned and works perfectly on my Z9. I hope this help you, or at least anyone else who is thinking about or already has this amazing lens. Here's the Amazon link to the lens collar. I hope it is allowed: a.co/d/9TZvHdP
I got this yesterday at a "good" price as part of their Christmas promotion. I'm fed up with Adobe as I think it's so clunky and prone to problems after windows updates. The latest 24H2 upgrade wiped out my creative cloud apps and now the Adobe apps will not download and install despite me following all their advice and having a system that exceeds the Adobe recommended system requirements and all the windows requirements. Adobe now tell me to change my browser (Opera). To add insult to injury they are increasing the subscription charges, so I thought it would be a good time to make the change. Right from the get-go it seems much more intuitive and I am blown away by the noise reduction. Does the optical module lens optimisation work with OEM teleconverters fitted? That would be e real game changer for wildlife photographers!
not if you're a fuji shooter!
Snapbridge to your smartphone, and just grab a dollar store phone dock to prop it up. You'll get pretty much all your camera controls and a monitor signal on your smart device whether it be a phone, tablet, or laptop for recording yourself.
I like this video. Recording and sharing with us what you are viewing as you make images. The piano background is relaxing and contemplative. Nice work.
Haha yeah I figure the relaxing music goes well with me overexerting myself and everything going wrong 😆 I’m hoping to get back up there again soon, maybe to photograph some of the other areas I haven’t gotten to yet!
Hello Robert. Genuinely enjoyed this video in many ways. Black and White images are always a must see for me. Started the video with color and ended in Monochrome. Changing scenery and topic. The background music is relaxing and first rate. You have something here, love the vibe.
Thanks very much! 😀
Great video 👍🙂
I've now updated the subtitles for this video to make sense, and they should now auto-translate better too 😅
Hi Rob, great video as always that mine is a fantastic place for interesting photos.I have watched and really enjoyed this video so I hope the YT people realise your content is very much admired. Thanks again
I watched your video. I bought the 35-150 for my z6ii. I adored the lens, still do. Yesterday, I bought the MB-N11 battery grip. I attached the grip to the camera, with the 35-150 on. I proceeded to pick it up and hold it without much thought - *click*. You're right. The bone of my palm just below where my right index finger attaches to the palm exactly aligns with the bottom button of the lens. How unfortunate......
24-120 f/4 is a stellar lens and alternative. Rocking that lens you'll already have plenty of stabilization coming off your camera's IBIS I mean if it won't suffice in most cases then I'd argue it's not the lens, shouldn't be a factor Yes it's not as bright as certain other lenses, but it still performs really well and I'd honestly put the 24-120 as a viable option IMHO there will never be an endgame one-does-it-all type of lens. The 35-150 from Tamron is really versatile, but it's definitely costly. Pairing the 35-150 with a 14-30 or something like that would be pretty golden in my book, but I suppose it's all about individual use. I have the 24-120 f/4 S and the 70-200 f/2.8 S, and yes there's an overlap but I feel these two cater for literally anything, at least for me I mainly do product presentation and everyday outdoor / family photo. Some landscape. These are perfect for that The 24-120 is even great for semi-macro photography as it has a 0.35 m focusing distance across the entire zoom range I get it's not entirely the same as the 35-150 from Tamron, naturally these are different, but I'd argue some might be torn between these as they do cater for a similar use case altogether Fully extended the 24-120 even directly competes with the 35-150 due to the focusing distance alone, seeing that you'll be looking at a 0.85 m or something like that with the latter. The 24-120 even handles its bokeh and overall separation really well, even at f/4 There are definitely some gaps in the Z lens lineup, and on paper the 35-150 should be a very nifty workhorse in this specific segment, then again, and sadly, there will always be some caveats Unless you tend to work in very harsh or demanding lighting conditions, say weddings, stuff like that, the 35-150 would definitely be my pick Aside from that, the 24-120 is a very great option overall, and I'd strongly recommend it for anyone on that specific budget. If you manage to get a second hand unit in decent condition, that might actually be a very good deal
The lens I’m really waiting for is Sigma’s 28-105mm f/2.8, which I actually now own on L mount - but I’d love to have it on Z mount 😀 Maybe someday soon we’ll start seeing more Sigma lenses available! I agree on the 24-120 and did briefly own one after making this video, but I did unfortunately find it too dark for my use-case a lot of the time. It’s easily my favourite of the Nikon zooms though.
@@robert_may Yes I am also looking at the Sigma 28-105 f/2/8 to pair with my Z9 and Zf, and have even considered purchasing it in the Sony mount and pairing it with a Megdap, it is the perfect all round lens combination for my needs, and I just wish that Nikon would allow Sigma into their FF Z Mount stable. Like you I believe Nikon is missing the very important market that Tamron/Nikon and Sigma are targetting. Thank you for an excellent and impartial review of the Tamron 35-150 lens by the way, you have saved me some serious money!
Love the video but it reminds me of my frustrations with shooting 120 film.
Nice.
I found your channel a few months back and I really enjoy your videos. Next time I visit my friend in Thornhill, I’ll try and remember your suggestion about mid Wales.
Enjoyed the video Rob, Elan valley so beautiful.
Hope the 3200 roll comes out ok!
Great video, Robert. You're so fortunate to have places like Elan Valley in your neighbourhood, I wish I had. Will definitely have to add mid-Wales to my list of places to visit (but probably never will...😞). That train ride though seemed like a bit of a horror story. Pop your head out at the wrong moment and you'll never have to visit the local barber again...
Yeah Wales is really quite stunning, especially when the sun's out, and I feel bad that I've explored relatively little of it despite living here for so long 😅 And they do at least have signs saying not to stick your head out the window! 😆 I probably could have gotten a few more moving shots if I wasn't trying to use a waist-level finder, as I'd almost certainly have lost some appendages trying to operate that out the window haha.
Love your pictures, especially of the Loco. Kinda curious for the Delta 3200 results tho. 😜 I got back to shooting film as well lately. I find the slower approach simply relaxing, almost contemplative.
Haha I’ll get around to finishing the roll some day, honest 🙈 And yeah I’ve been really enjoying film this past year - the process and tactile nature of it make slower photography more fun for me.
good as always. I would like to buy a more powerful lens for my S5, to go with the 20-60. Given that the prices are more or less similar, what do you recommend between a 28-200, 24-105, 70-300 from Panasonic? Many thanks
Ooh good question. The 70-300 seems to be well-regarded by a lot of people, though I haven’t tried one myself. That’d be a nice complement to the 20-60. There’s also some options from Sigma in that range too that might be worth exploring, like their 70-200. I tend to like having a dedicated longer lens and I’ve historically always had something like a 70-200/70-300 alongside my standard zoom.
Nope not petty. I was having the same issue pressing that button. So I disconnected it. Lame to have it. I even got an after market foot for it but it was in the way of using the zoom ring. I'm so flustered because I loooved the idea of this lense. But sent it back
Sony seriously need to step up with the A7V or i will grab whatever Nikon Z8 II turns out to be
I use the Sigma fp L + EVF-11 Viewfinder with a Sigma 14mm f/1.4 lens and an XLCS cage on which I have a DPL aluminium rack fitted with a 2TB SD card (no wires) and a wireless shutter system. So far, I have used it for street photography, landscape and to a lesser extent architecture. It is unbelievable. Straight out of the box, I have found the Sigma to perform better than the Leica SL3 I have tried before from a colleague at work and yes the Sigma is expensive... until you try it and consider what you get for the price. Then you will realize it punches above the weight of cameras that cost three times as much. Sigma is actually a bit like Mamiya, these are extremely well made cameras but the brand is itself quite specialized. While Mamiya made an attempt at 35mm film camera in the 80s (I had one that was stolen in a burglary) it is not a brand that is known to the greater public, it is a brand that is exclusively known to professional photographer and anyone with an interest in medium format. These are two brands that are often ahead of their time but that for some reasons don't quite have the badge and appeal of a Leica or Hasselblad to photographers who very often never use their camera to the best of its ability. There is almost this idea that owning a Leica or Hasselblad will make you a great photographer without you working towards it. That's why I think the Sigma is so popular in Japan the way Mamiya was in the mid format offer, because it offers a hell of a lot more if you care to pause and read the manual and watch a lot of UA-cam videos. Japanese people I believe have the patience and the will to work for it and extract what is hidden inside. It is an almost endless learning curve. It is ironic that the fp is marketed as being specialized because I have found it to be in fact quite versatile considering what it does. Even the preset settings are more interesting than that of the Leica. To me this is the sort of camera that might become collector because you know there is no guarantee Sigma will ever produce a series of fp upgrades. The fp and fp L offer is an acquired taste among photographer and the lack of mechanical shutter is the absolute breaking point for the "purists". I love a mechanical shutter too but I can work around it. When you look at Sigma's cameras over the years, they tend to come up with quirky innovative models but they are always hit and miss and never quite get the recognition they deserve just like Mamiya did not quite always get it compared to Hasselblad. The company was sold and bought a few times over. What is reassuring with Sigma is that their Lens are now recognized as some of the best when maybe 10 years ago, they were in the Tamron category, you would buy them only if you could not afford the Nikon, Canon, Sony and Pentax lenses. Overall I bought the fp L exactly for what you said, the quality and results you get, the ability to keep it reasonably compact and because there is so many smart accessories for the Sigma out there, the flexibility it offers. For the thing I do right now which is hiking and sailing, I only need three thing: my Sigma fp L, Insta 360 and a DJI Mini. I might get a 35mm Lens after that and it will be it. When I used to have a Nikon DSLR I would carry so much weight, very often I would not bother to take it out and use my mobile phone instead... this is how bad and sad it was.
My favorite type of lens either❤ It is extremely suitable for almost any kind of usage. No matter you want to take foods, streets, landscapes or playing instruments it always performs great. The only issue of this lens will be the motor, a little bit noisy especially with cameras like Zf, the noise of motor will be recorded to the audio and sounds like a geiger counter
Different Time zones could be pretty contra productive in lifestream, and some of us do full time job.... I love your videos, having 50 nifty I was not much interested in comparisons of similar lensens. As wildlife finderscoop rubberneck that 28-200 video was a piece of my interest. Planty of us are ADHD diagnosed, I do have to take time and watch videos in sequences as are I am not capable to do it in one 17 min dragnet.
I agree 100% with all of your comments, to be honest I am still using a lot of "F" glass on my Z9 as the Z glass is expensive and also looks boring!
Yeah I really don't love the external design of the modern lenses, sadly 😅
I think this video highlights the problem with receiving gear for free for review. These are objectively minor nit-picks, but when you amplify those nit-picks by $1800 of your own money they matter.
Good video. I tend to agree with you and while the 1.4TC works fine on my Z8 with 100-400 it is far from that with the 180-600. I have found that sharpness suffers as do the other aspects as you mention. Fortunately I can shoot in crop mode if required & leave the TC at home when I have the 180-600 with me.
Great to see you back Robert. Love the content and chat 👍🏻
Yeah, trying to make all this online video stuff work is extremely difficult. I've been at it on my larger channel since 2011 and still have no answers. 😅 It's challenging to reflect on a video that takes at least a few full days of time result in 50 people being interested in it. Most of my work here is from search or external as well.
Yeah it can certainly be frustrating, and has meant I've shelved a number of videos that were more effort than they were worth to edit 😅 My most popular videos tend to be the setup tutorials, but unless I keep buying new cameras it's kinda hard to sustain those haha.
Very true regarding the new camera gear thing. My most popular videos have been overviews on bridge cameras and digicams. Manufacturers haven't made new cameras in that format in ages. Like you were saying, the expense of buying a piece of gear for a video often doesn't work out cost wise.
Great video. Love your take on stuff. Have you had a chance to try this camera on the nikkor 180-600 yet? Can you compare this camera to the D500? Any thoughts are appreciated.
Ooh yes that's actually what I was using when taking those shots. It works well as a setup, and isn't even particularly front-heavy 👍
@ Awesome. Thanks.
@ Ever try that setup with a 1.4x t/c attached?
i think a walkthrough and brief history of older gear would be fun to watch. im not a consumer of shorts, i find the experience Not Good. personally i'd rather see a longer video with chapters. eg "cameras from the 50's #1 #2 #3" etc. keep up the good work, i super enjoy the content.
Yeah I don’t really love shorts either, and they’re not even that much quicker to make 😅 I definitely like the idea of covering some of the cool older bits I come across - maybe some shorter normal videos where I don’t witter on for 15 minutes!
good to see you again. You will always have my support.
You do you Robert… most of us will still be here to watch
Hi Rob just keep doing what your doing mate your style of presentation is great laid back and well informed stay safe take care

Hi Robert. Looked you up on Bluesky. I agree, it is so much better than the other SM platforms currently. See you there!
