Pokemon will always be "too easy" (and that's okay)

  • "Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled trainers should try to win with their favorites."
The fundamental problem with Pokémon games is the core game design. Just slapping a "hard mode" difficulty selector isn't going to solve the problem.

the thing is the first games were never really that hard looking back. what made them hard was the fact that most of us who played as kids couldnt understand type matchups and strategy.

USUM are very close to being the hardest games in the franchise, what the fuck is the argument of "Pokemom Games now are too easy"

its way easier to gain levels and to ev train now, so yeah they are easier.
Plus, trainers have much less pokemon and most without held items and such

I think this covers the issue better than I've seen others in your particular camp.

What I’ve accepted about games lately is that if they’re fun, they’re fun. Even though I prefer older Pokémon (I’m playing Emerald as I write this comment), I’ll still probably play any new main series title that comes out. The series is simple and fun, and every new title is a chance for new experiences, whether that be alone or with others.
When Gen 8 came out, I blindly agreed with all the critiques of the games. After all, they were fair, and there are a lot of issues with the games. Eventually I got Shield solely for competitive play, and continued to dislike the base game my whole playthrough.
Fast forward 2 years and I’m trying to complete my living dex as well as get Pokémon with every possible ribbon. For this, I’ll need a Gen 8 game, so I got Shield again(had sold it a long time ago) and just played it.
Well, it was fun. It wasn’t anything amazing, but I had few overt problems with the game. I just wanted to play with some Pokemon I liked and experience Galar from a fresh perspective. This made the game a lot better, and it’s not like anything had changed about the content itself. Just what I expected going in.
I found Gen 9 to be a massive step up, so I’m hopeful for what Game Freak will do next. Ultimately, as long as people are joining the community and HAVING FUN, everything will be OK.
Great video by the way, I really like and appreciate your channel!

9:47 This. Other games with elemental systems (or equivalent mechanics, such as "weapon triangles" in strategy games) reward/punish you less by comparison, or indeed rely on the asymmetry you were talking about (e.g. Fire Emblem games might give bosses and certain other enemies overpowered weapons or very high stats).
Another thing I've heard, and I'd like to know what you think of this, is that single battles being the overwhelmingly dominant in-game format both limits room for good challenge and leaves wasted potential for making the gameplay more interesting. (We get it, singles were the entire combat system in Gens 1 and 2, as doubles didn't exist until Gen 3. But that was then and this is now). Which btw, it feels ironic how doubles are so ignored in-game despite being the official tournament format (it's almost like they realize how much more interesting doubles are, but do nothing about it).
The idea is that if doubles featured more prominently, it'd give the player more things to keep track of and limit room for cheese. If you're gonna use an item, think about it-- the two opposing mons might gang up on only one of yours. Set your priorities-- which enemy should you deal with first, and how? And such and such. Plus over the years all these doubles-oriented moves, abilities, items have been added (Follow Me, Wide Guard, Telepathy, Plus/Minus, etcetera)... that go to waste in casual play because there are hardly any double battles in the story. There's a reason the GameCube duology has a lot of fans using it as an example to contrast against the main series, and asking for either remakes, a sequel or a spiritual successor.

When I say I want difficulty, I mean for Pokémon standards. I don't want a hard game, just one that's not XY or SWSH easy.
For example, there's no reason why ORAS gym leaders needed to be nerf'd from RS, especially when that game already had party EXP Share to make it easier than Ruby & Sapphire.

personally i think the emphasis should be more on building synergies within the team rather than trying to beat a static strategy by gym leaders. the problem i am seeing is that abusing type matchups i harder romhacks is a must. 2x damage from super effective is far too good to pass up. and you kinda want that on all your mons. something i am enjoying immensely from pokemon infinite fusion is that you can only take a limited number (usually 3 or 4) into gym battles and that you can fuse pokemon (so you can play with 12 pokemon fused into your team of 6) to adjust typings on the fly to match the gym if you struggle. so it's much easier to get the right typings and coverage moves for the fight without having to throw away your friends/favorite mons. now if only that rom hack was actually challanging...

I think the only thing I disagree with is the idea that GameFreak doesn't care about their games enough to polish them. I think it's the exact opposite. I think they're caring too much about being innovative and trying to keep with the modern times. They're trying to move forward each step of the way, even making competitive Pokemon more accessible for folks who can't spend hours researching EVs and IVs.
The amount of effort they've put into developing the world, lore, and characters of Pokemon also shows that they really do care. The latest regions are extremely rich in culture and design, with a lot of real world history and pop culture being referenced in the environments and even some Pokemon. I also would argue that their human characters have become way more interesting as the games gone by. Sword and Shield, in my opinion, has some of the best human characters in the entire franchise. And Scarlet/Violet have my absolute favorite rival characters and end game story.
The REAL problem is that they're trying to do all of this while also still trying to keep their usual release schedule. Having their cake and eating it too, so to speak. GameFreak’s biggest crime isn't that they stopped caring. It's that they're not allowing themselves the time to get everything just right.
I don't know what higher power is making these developers release a new region every 3-4 years, but they need to shut up. Let these guys cook for *at least* 5-7 years. Back when Pokmeon was pixels, 3-4 years may have been enough. But ever since they switched to 3D, there's no way they can maintain that same schedule. Maybe they're worried Pokemon as a franchise will lose its momentum if they don't release any mainline games once a region has been milked of all its worth. But that's a poor excuse given how that's affected the quality.

I’m of the belief that Pokémon should be easy, but I think that making it braindead like they are, it just makes the games less fun for kids. If adult fans want a challenge, they shouldn’t be playing Pokémon. It’s like that’s a part of the games identity. A hard mode is laughable for Pokémon.

For me I dont think the problem is that Pokemon is too easy. The problem is that Polemon is uninteresting. Its boring. From both story an gameplay, shit is stake, worn out, and has never reached its full potential. Competetive Pokemon proves that the core system can have incredible complexity and depth. But GameFreak has no interest in utilizing even a fraction of that. The series needs some dramatic shakeups, and the Legends series might be the right direction. Or at east a good one. But making the core series mandatory double battles with trainers who dont use monotype teams and only 2 Pokemon would probably be enough to bring back some excitement.

imo dmg is the thing that makes pokemon to easy. If i can reasonably 1shot a pokemon that is about 5 lvl higher just because my pokemon is using stab supereffective and a move with 90 base power, then some thing is a miss. i usually play pokemon using only moves with about 60 base power and not perfect accuaracy. and thats really all o would change to make pokemon more challenging. remove stab, nerfe supereffective dmg and have no moves with 100 accuracy.

I didnt watch your video yet! This is blatant presumptions! But I gotta say: I'm currently replaying Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2. And it is still much harder to play and win than modern Pokémon games. It's not about perception. I guess they have to make the games for younger audiences, because kids play with smartphones way earlier now than other videogames, compared to the past. But that's just my uneducated assumption that I throw out there before watching the video because I'm a bad person. I will now continue to watch further.
