Here’s a song I wrote in Old English a while ago, which I have decided to remake. Music, lyrics and arrangement by myself, with vocals by me and my wife. The song is dedicated to perhaps the greatest Englishman in history, King Alfred the Great. The song is largely based on the Anglo Saxon Chronicle’s telling of the Battle of Edington/Ethandun in which King Alfred overcame the Great Heathen Army and baptised their king, Guthrum. In a church in my hometown, there’s a stained glass window which portrays Alfred with the tagline “Subduer of the Danes”, which I thought was an awesome title, so I just had to implement it! I hope you enjoy! If you'd like to support my work, you can do so here: buymeacoffee.com/theskaldicbard/ Thank you for your kindness. Lyrics in description. My intention is exclusively to teach history and languages through song. I do not condone, endorse or seek to glorify violence.
I feel Tolkien would have absolutely loved this. He loved the Anglo-Saxons and was very keen on songs, if you have read any of his works you know it!!!
Yes!! I read Beowulf and other Anglo-Saxon literature before I read the Lord of the Rings ... I'm glad, because I think I got way more out of it than I would have otherwise. His inspiration is super clear.
Poor Tolkien even felt a *great* despair over the Norman conquest. Considering it a disruption of true English culture and heritage. I can't help but agree with him, personally.
as someone who hails from a small town in south west England called Cippanhamme,(old english) where King Alfred the great sister was married to the king of Mercia. it was later sacked by Danelaw and shortly after Alfred beat the Danelaw army at Edington. it brings me so much joy hearing this! really great work man! im really getting into Anglo-Saxon history
May I recommend a society called The English Companions - Tha Engliscan Gesithas. It covers Old English language, history and culture and has an excellent quarterly magazine.
If I ever win the lottery, I'm going to buy plots of land all over the English countryside and commission 20ft statues of Anglo-Saxon Kings to be built there. You'll be walking over the hills of Gloucestershire one day and see Æðelstan standing proud watching over his land. One can dream.
And me i'm gonna honour the true natives of Britannia, the Brythonic celts , their only descendants are the welsh and cornish, like Boudica, And especially the King Arthur, the greatest Brythonic ever lived.
Such a truly inspirational tale of a man who stood tall over so many brutal warriors, defending his people and increasing their quality of life, and encouraging the realm to learn and read. He truly earned the nickname "The Great".
Saint Alfred, pray for us. Named my second son for him. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend the Life of Alfred, by Asser, especially the Giles translation.
As a kurd who is fascinated with the western History, this song is the real banger of the ones i listend to so far in your channel. The last 2 verses really hit me hard That he is called great thanks to his good deeds.
As an American 🇺🇸 with Ancestry from England 🏴 Denmark 🇩🇰 and Sweden 🇸🇪. This song really hits! I love learning about our Anglo Saxon and Viking ancestors and love learning of both cultures. However, Alfred the Great definitely is probably my favorite Anglo Saxon (and one person of that age) if it was not for him we would most likely be speaking some form of an Old Norse derived language like Danish. Old English may not have evolved to our Modern English and theoretically could have died out. 💯🏴🗡️✊🏻 Also much love to any of our distant Kinfolk in Europe. 🧬🩸🌳
What a gift! It came exactly when I was studying Anglo-Saxon history before to the Norman conquest. King Alfred is a fascinating character to learn about. Most popular culture prefers to narrate stories about Viking invaders rather than those who fought pirate invasions. Early English history is fascinating, from the Saxon conquest to the shift in beliefs, internal battles, unifications, Viking invasions, religion disputes, and so on. Damn, I'm not even English, but the events of 1066 almost brought me to tears. Thankyou for this!
What a coincidence that I'm watching the TV series "The Last Kingdom" right now, in which Alfred is one of the main characters And the song itself turned out to be amazing. Great job!

@Dovahkiin8646 lol more than magic. It literally adds in the Norse gods and then later spits in their faces in a secret ending by saying, "turns out all the Norse gods were actually our made up pre-human race called Isu" like they did with Christianity in earlier games. Additionally, many historical figures and events didn't happen in the game the way they actually did, and it makes a mockery by twisting history so the Vikings dominate all of England.
