About the texture pop-in, PS1 games often used the trick of using low polygon models of background assets then swap them for the normal models when they're close enough instead of relying on distance fog. Grinch seems to be doing this but because it does it badly it does look like bad texture pop-in.
Just a few things to mention about the PS1 and its graphics that you brought up, since, like me, you didn't grow up with the console and had to get accustomed to its quirks later in life. Watching the blueprint clip in and out of his hand, while seeing the box textures in his mouth is a result of the PS1 having a lot more polygon and texture warping. "Affine texture warping" I think it's called. There's videos here that go into more detail, but the short of it is that, despite the hardware being easier to program for, texture files and vertices in the character/environment models had a tendency to shift in space based on camera perspective. You had to go to extra programming lengths to minimize them, which not a lot of developers did. If you've seen the AVGN episode on the PS1 Planet of the Apes game, James complains about the wall textures for the same reason. Hell, load up the PS1 version of the Spider-Man game, and you'll see it there, too. It's one of the issues that the N64 actually lacks, since its hardware allows for far easier use of perspective correct textures. Regarding the draw distance, it looks like fading out the textures of the world geometry was a stylistic choice (possibly brought on by deadlines) since I've seen other PS1 games use something similar, like the first Spyro the Dragon game, but it looks far nicer since they didn't just remove the textures, they had different flat colors instead, all of which kept in line with the art direction of the game. Other PS1 games use very N64-like distance fog, and others are coded well enough to minimize distance fog and just used some pop in for the character models. As a warning for a modded PS Classic, I also modded mine to play far more games with a superior emulator, but it doesn't work well with everything. I wanted to play the Emperor's New Groove game (a good Spyro clone) but it breaks too much of the visuals to be playable. That said, for PS1 recommendations for good, lesser known exclusives, here is my list: Ghost in the Shell The Italian Job (GTA-like based on the original British film, not the remake) Soul of the Samurai (Resident Evil in feudal Japan, samurai cop versus zombies) Brave Fencer Musashi O.D.T Parasite Eve 1 and 2 Rising Zan: Samurai Gunman (not a great game, but it's an attempt at stylish combat predating Devil May Cry, hampered by stiff controls) In the Hunt (if you like Metal Slug) Muppet Monster Adventure Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure Strider 2 Omega Boost (arcadey rail shooter, like Star Wars meets mechas) Vanark (Star Fox, but with a lot more story beats in between levels) Star Wars Demolition (made by the team who did Vigilante 8, a Twisted Metal competitor) Jumping Flash 1 and 2 Tail Concerto The Megaman Legends games Apocalypse (Bruce Willis run and gun) ONE (non Bruce Willis run and gun, also a lot harder) Herc's Adventures Tenchu 1 and 2 (ninja stealth/assassin games) Einhander Medievil 2 (the first game got remade, but the sequel is still PS1 exclusive) Jackie Chan Stuntmaster The Wipeout games (if you like F-Zero) The Nightmare Creatures games (don't remember if you liked the N64 version, but the PS1 version is better) Blaster Master: Blasting Again Hot Shots Golf 1 and 2 (if you like Mario Golf)

Getting a PlayStation classic with a flash drive that has a ton of games and analog support sounds like a wonderful Christmas present. I myself bought Doom + Doom 2 today. Now thinking about it, I should have bought it during Christmas instead as it would have been a great present during the holiday. Well, at least I can consider it an early present.
0:39 Wait, so the next review WON'T be Minority Report? I know I won't shut up about that game, but I really want to hear you tear that game a new one!
The fact that the game has such limited healing items could've made it into the precursor to that Winnie the Pooh baseball game in poorly programmed accidental difficulty, if it wasn't for the reset

A bit off topic, but what did you think of the Nostalgia Critic’s thoughts on the Jim Carrey Grinch (he can’t understand why anyone would like it)? And what about the Illumination film did you not like?
From what I remember, the Nostalgia Critic's complaints (the ones that aren't subjective, like comedy or the look) all boil down to "the original is flawless in every way and therefore nobody is allowed to ever touch the property again." Which is an ungodly narrow-minded view of art, creation, and film in general. They're two different works with different goals, and to just declare out of hand that nobody's allowed to touch a property again because you don't think it can be improved is incredibly closed-minded. My problem with the Illumination Grinch is that it completely botches the Grinch's character. He's just a guy with social anxiety that the Who's have no problem embracing, which is nowhere near as compelling as other adaptations. (The musical of the Grinch doesn't follow the live-action film, but still has much deeper motives for the Grinch.) Plus its plot is mostly a string of unconnected events to where stealing Christmas is just a thing that he arbitrarily decides to do out of nowhere.
@@Darklordjadow1That is an issue I had with the Critic I had that I noticed both with this and his Old vs. New on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: he seemed to refuse to acknowledge the good of newer versions of either film and insisted the old were superior in every way. Especially with the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory one, since he seemed to be under the assumption the Tim Burton one was a remake of the original, when it was meant to be a more true adaptation of the book (I think he also forgot that Roald Dahl himself hated the original so much that he forbde anyone from adapting the books sequel).
