- This was like legos for adults! After digging the root cellar with the mini-x, I now had to assemble the ICFs (Insulated Concrete Forms) to prepare for the concrete. This was my first time doing anything like this, but it went rather well.
Here is the dig video: • DIGGING THE ROOT CELLAR

I know I finally seen it lol
I'm a builder of 42 years. Don't know what your water table depth is, but if it is above where your floor level is, you will need to apply waterproofing to the exterior walls and create a french drain system up against the exterior walls, to releave what is called hydro-static pressure (water flowing up against the walls underground). It doesn't look as if you have that issue, but keep that in mind in the future.
Thanks for the tip. Hasn't been an issue, but I'll keep that in mind
Regarding the Tetris/Legos comments: Played video games my whole life. Recently got an excavator. I'm firmly convinced my video game experience (quickly developing muscle memory from joystick/keymapping movements) shortened the learning curve dramatically.
Lego blocks for adults. Awesome.
As I was getting ready for church, this rerun came up on my feed. Wow, you’ve made progress on the homestead!!!
This will be nice when done!
this is an interesting video. these blocks arr great idea.
This was cool to watch , on to the next one .
Awesome video!
I have an ICF house and it's amazing. Great product and well worth the investment.
I helped build 2 ICF homes. Im happy you enjoy yours.
What type of siding do you have on house ?
Did u put drain in?
We are checking into building our house with ICF, i think it’s so neat and smart. Especially with tornadoes in Oklahoma. Mimsy shouted you out. Have a blessed weekend. Wendy❤️🐞
Be careful, some pest control companies won't guarantee. Termites love the foam. Can't treat it against the cement. Here in the southeast, termites are bad. But, in a storm shelter, no wood
Its OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY lol and I guess we are trendy lol good for you on the build! You will enjoy it!!
Thanks! My garden got hit by some big winds just before yours, and we are enjoying our toothache plants too. Thankfully this one went better for us, but you're right about building a homestead being a lot of work. Hang in there!
Thanks for the detailed review. It looks like it would not be so easy for me to build. If I did it I'd hire someone to do it for me. I would break myself.
So cool!! I Haden seen this before.
hey man. my hats off to you, its not all about muscle, its the will to do it.
Thank you kindly.
Awesome video, learned so much from it!
I LIKE THIS. AND COMMENTS, IM LEARNING ABOUT THIS SO I CAN BUILD ONE
Every layer set rebar. Your correct.
I would not use 4" ICFs below grade. Use 6" or more for below grade applications. 4" of concrete lacks the tensile strength to retain earth.
Never heard of this stuff before. Nice video. Thanks for sharing and good luck to you.
Build a storage shed on top with a trap door.
An outdoor kitchen actually
How did i miss this video lol just popped up lol
Tetris and Legos, LOL! 😉😂
Thanks for the idea. Fellow prepper here. Do you think it's a good idea to do the concrete floor first? I'm thinking that will ensure a concrete on concrete contact on walls and floor, also makes sure all walls are leveled. Just a thought, but great video!
Greetings... Well, this made me think of how long I have been well my 2 kiddos helped me as well building on my #RootCellar going on 15.2 years & guess what?? my fellow #AsheenaTribe members got to see some rustic potatoes go in!!! THANKS!!!
Always a great show on this channel
Thanks for that!
The vietcong has insulated foam concrete forms?
Exactly what I was thinking!
you had me at Lego's
That's how they got me!
Do you know any good vids that show how to dig and level the bottom of the hole. Also step by step on how to start the first course of blocks. I have very little construction experience and this seems to be the most critical part.
Looks like u exhausted, rest & it will go again. 👍
Going to be hard to install a water barrier which it needs.
Right
place a junk car body on it and make trap door inside so you can hide during zombie attack lol
I also feel you should pour the walls and floor together? That way there isnt any seams that water could work its way in?? Its not easy to get a good water proof seal if they are poured separately . But im sure by now its all finished lol
1 are you in the United States 🇺🇸? 2 maybe you should install a sump too your floor. As to keep hydrostatic pressure down and can use that water.off grid.
A root celler works by using the thermal mass of the surrounding soil to control the temperature of the cellar. Wouldn't the use of the styrofoam forms create an insulated barrier and not allow the temperature inside the root cellar to benefit from all that thermal mass?
Technically it's a basement storage area for canned goods and a storm shelter, not for root vegetables
I thought the purpose of a root cellar was to take advantage of the natural 50-55 degree ground temperature to preserve your food. If that is correct, why use insulated panels???
Lack of muscles is not your problem, it is your lack of attraction to earth, that is holding you back, so EAT more. Cool build.
It's like a giant lego box
thank u for info
Good installation of my intellectual property product.
Never saw this till now. How did it finish up. Dual purpose is a good idea
I have not yet finished it.... Gotta get on that.
Getting fancy with the editing. Loving this project, I want to do something similar at some point in the future. This will be an incredibly strong structure. I once saw a truck hit a house that was made with ICF. I was working next door. The bosses truck started rolling. Went down a slope, launched off a 50 ft cliff bounced two times after traveling 100 yards and hit the house. Only damage to the house was a little but of messed up styrofoam....My biggest question here is vapor barrier. Is there a need for one. ..also you could plaster the styrofoam inside once the concrete is poured for looks if you wanted. Vapor barrier?
FARMER G - MY HOMESTEAD, The foam is a vaper barrier. And you can finish the walls inside with any traditional covering.
FARMER G - MY HOMESTEAD , Might also add. If you're doing the forms all the way to the roof. You could add brick or other traditional sidings to the exterior.
I’ve done stucco so I know you can plaster the interior, smooth coat would be best option in my opinion. I was thinking that the foam would be a vapor barrier but not sure. Thanks for the response Patrick.
for this size, is taht expensive to build, would like to have a cost idea for the wall and concrete please
Hey man I'm gonna be doing the same think and I think this would be a easier and more effective way to do it but i don't know where I would go about buying the blocks ?
Most lumber yards sell icf blocks. You cal phone around and ask. They are quite common. But if you do you icf's. One thing to remember in any wall construction.... Build a footing first. The footing is critical to prevent your structure from settling into the ground. It distributes the load of the structure across a larger area than the base of the walls.
I got mine at Menards, but they had to order them.
The one thing id be afraid of is pouring a root cellar underground without a footing. Once you pour those walls the entire weight of the structure is sitting on dirt. A footing spreads the weight over a larger area so the walls dont slowly sink. But other than that i love the work and effort he put into this structure.
We actually don't have "dirt" here. We have a lot of rock mixed with clay. I really don't think this will be settling or sinking, but I'll try to let you know if it does.
Good about the over kill
13:09 will you be cementing those tree roots in for added structural support?
It might help to have a separate camera person so the video isn’t so jumpy, but great detail.
Yeah, we're growing our own camera people... might take a couple of years
I LOVE it!! Like "Lincoln Logs" for adults!!
Why no footing?
It supports the weight of the concrete walls and roof.
Good luck with settling and cracks.
We're pretty much building on rock and some clay.... the ground here is incredibly hard.
And when those wood footings rot...big problems
ICF's are likely not necessary for a root cellar, since it's unheated space. (So, you spent more then necessary). You could have used other forms. My favorite walls, are those that used a form 2 feet high, and is nothing but a bunch of boards. Remove the form, see the pattern of the wood.
When I compared what I'd spend making temporary forms, these seemed comparable and easier.
If you pour your concrete in layers it's better. The Styrofoam has a tendency to bulge if the concrete is too heavy from above. One of m neighbors made that mistake.
Not really. The layers you refer to is usually above 8-10ft. This is no different then an 8ft foundation wall. As long as the sides and middles are properly braced (they make special bracing for ICF) and you fill all walls evenly at the same time, you will be fine.
I thought the idea of ICF was to insulate? Isn't a root cellar a cold area?
"Root cellar " may not be the best name. This is like a basememt pantry storage for canned goods and such that doubles as a storm shelter. It is not for potatoes, carrots and sweet potatoes
@@PapaPepper storm shelter... great idea!👍
What is that rebar tool called my friend? Thank you in advance
I will have to ask my friend. I'll try to ask tomorrow.
what was the tool called?
Wow. My intellectual property being used. It's awesome. What did it cost? Full out. I'm owed 10%- 10%
What was the cost of this build and who was your supplier for ICF blocks?
Bought them at Menards. Sp3cial order, Fox Blocks. Don't recall prive, but it's probably increased by now
It's like children of the corn around the hole.
😂😂😂
Don't forget goodyear products. To waterproof your area.

Nice! I don't know how I missed the digging of this but I am going to watch that video now. So will you be putting the entry on the top of the cellar?
Yes. The entry will be on the top
Do you need a permit for that?
I forgotten to say. " Goodmorning "
Don’t you need gravel floor for moisture in the root cellar?
Technically it's more of a storm shelter / underground pantry as opposed to a traditional root cellar. However, five gallon buckets of water can be added to increase humidity to store root vegetables
Hi@@PapaPepper - thanks for posting this video. (I'm about to go look for part 2).
I saw somewhere 'ol timers'
kept burlap bags of charcoal in their root cellars. Supposed to soak up moisture when there was too much, and release moisture when there was too little.
@@daniel_sterling charcoal eh? What a cool tip!
...and after the hurricane... you will have an indoor pool...
Not necessarily
ok im no concrete expert guys so plz enlighten me if im completely wrong BUT how the hell is foam blocks going to hold back tons of concrete filler without separating or worse collapsing?
Friedrich Wilhelm the poly webbing that is built into them provide some structure while concrete is wet as well as the rebar. My husband is certified in ICF construction and builds houses, schools, manufacturing plants etc out of them.
The cost of building a 2k sq ft home out of icf is on average 10% higher than stick framing. However, that cost is recovered within the first 5 years in energy efficiency.
For example, my home is 2200 sqft. In Oklahoma. A similar sized stick frame home 1 mile down the road has an electric bill of around $400/mo in summer months. Where as mine has never (12 years) been over $100.
@@catherinemilliganrn And termites won't eat it. And it will last hundreds of years
Video starts at 12:01
Are they made of styro?
That's the main bulk of it.
Pretty cool. The music is irritating. Had to turn the sound down.
You made that part look incredibly easy. I have a question for anyone with experience with this stuff...i want to do this in southern Ontario. Im wondering if this type of construction material would make an ideal root cellar in high humidity conditions? Im thinking it might be ideal. I have to research this more. So far I'm sold!!
Pat Konelectric is in Wisconsin with some experience in these... He's a helpful friend, and you can find his comment on this video. Perhaps he would have an answer for you.
Don't know if you've every heard of or listened to the band the Expendables, but you remind me of their frontman Geoff Weers.
I'm familiar. Thanks for the compliment.
You were given on the job training as a child.
or you could have built a toilet closet out of those extras?
Too bad you didn’t know about micro rebar, this could of been done way faster.
Should have poured your floor first or at least footings for your walls to sit on,that wood will rot and your walls are going to sink ..that why we pour footings ...good luck
The wood was removed, and the ground here is mostly Rock , so I don't really see it going anywhere
@@PapaPepper smh. He’s right, you do need footers. It won’t take much time for this to sink. You can fix this fuck up with a crane.
What was the total cost for the ICF Root Cellar after you finished it?
Not finished yet, I'll try to crunch some numbers soon.
@@PapaPepper please do bro. Did you use a lot of rebar inbetween the forms?
@@toadtoadersson2239 I put a decent amount of rebar in there. More to come with the roof and rest.
What was the cost for this project... im in the midst of planning myself
Yes what was the cost.
Giant Lego Building.......cool!
How very interesting to watch!
It sucks when you don't have anyone to help you and have to hire people. Then everyone knows your business.
last I checked the age range for legos doesn't have an upper limit so legos are legos for adults too lol
Why would you insulate a cellar? You want the constant temperature that you are getting from being underground.
yeah, ok you're Mr. safety. those two small children standing at the edge of the ditch.
Probably because his kids aren't idiots....
@@Tgodson69 Nice!
That's Mr Pepper
I’m sick of stepping on Lego’s 😂
I can't believe your using wooden footers, concrete is not waterproof, wood, water, I don't care if it's treated, What could go wrong? After all the work your doing why didn't you put in concrete footers? You could have also tied the walls to the footer a lot easier.
Those were not permanent... the wood there was temporary.
Well i havnt watched much of the video just yet but when you say to hide if something bad happens i feel its way to small to stay in it for long? It should be twice the size and have a place to put a toilet and at the least a sink? Even the toilet is a dry toilet and then a dry sink that both drain into the same system or refuse storage? You will need some place to sleep and most of all breath....The swiss made ventilators are the best. The cheaper American made ones use flimsy and cheap parts and materials. That would be the most expensive part of the build. But it will keep absolutely everything bad for you and your family out of your shelter/root cellar. Minimum time after a nuke is about a week before it may be safe enough to travel due to radiation. You could be stuck in it for up to 30days! Dont forget the tablets you can take ot keep your body from absorbing the radiation. So if before the time is right to go back above ground if you have to in an emergency you can do it for short periods of time if you have the tablets. Right now im searching high and low for land in WV or maybe eastern TN or KY and hope i can find it soon? Our only requirement is that the land has a year round flowing creek. It hasnt been easy to find! :>/ Good luck with your root cellar.
So were u livin in ma s basement ?
"ma s basement?"...
Those Walls are pretty thin to be buried.
Definitely, not a safe place to have your kids during an emergency scenario.😢
try stabilizing your camera I'm getting dizzy and I don't care about extreme closeups of your face!
Duly noted. Thanks for taking the time to comment, let me know, and share your opinion.
More control of the camera and microphone would make it much more watchable.
Sorry about that... I'm constantly trying to improve, so thanks for the feedback.
The plural for lego is lego
I didn't see any footings and if they are not present I am afraid your walls may sink (concrete is extremely heavy and will crush downward into the dirt), most likely no level as they do. Best of luck! I.E: A typical concrete mix weighs 150 lbs. per cubic foot. So a 1 foot wide section of wall will weigh in at 1,000 lbs. +/-. Before you pour if, there are no footing don't waste the money without footings. Otherwise you could be creating a costly, permanent mistake.
Yeah, the "soil" here is mostly rock and clay... I'm not foreseeing any issues... but I've been wrong before. Thanks!
Footers are dug down to solid ground so the structure is not going to sink, as deep as that hole is I’m pretty sure there is no need for more digging
Your taxes are going to go up with that because of the cament right?
We'll see. Nuthin so far
Is this something a woman could build? I have tools just need to get the hole dug. I would also like to attach it to my basement.
😅😮 n8
When you realized you had an extra pallet of materials, were you worried you installed the walls incorrectly?
The walls are installed correctly, there was a miscalculation from the guy who ordered it. There is only so much room for error, and he confirmed that all was done properly before we poured. Thanks for asking though, good question!
