The Morphine reaction brought me to your channel. Great to hear intelligent commentary on two wonderful songs. Subscribing and checking out some more of your reactions.
,morphine is just one of those amazing underrated bands that have fell thru the gaps, absolutely stunning band, did recommend it to you on one of your Tom Waits reviews along with Tindersticks, Gallon Drunk, Cardiacs and firewater
Morphine was one of the most underrated, overlooked bands of the 90s. I think it was too dark for a lot of people. Their music is truly enchanting. I hope you guys get into them more...
@@ReactionsToTheClassics When I say “best”, I don’t mean popular, I just mean they were a band that carved out their own path/sound and that other bands, like The National, emulated. What’s interesting is that it’s only a 3-piece band. Bass (2-strings only), a baritone sax, and drums. That’s it. It makes for an intensely cool soundscape. Nobody sounded like them at the time.
Nice! Yeah, I like The National too. And when I say “emulate” I really mean you can tell Morphine was an inspiration for them. They have their own style/tone too. Songs to check out from Morphine include: Swing It Low, Cure For Pain, Super Sex, Buena, Honey White, Candy, I’m Free Now, Radar, Gone For Good, Early To Bed, Souvenir, A Good Woman Is Hard To Find, and You Look Like Rain
Morphine is a unique band, their album “Cure For Pain” is a favorite from the 90s. Interesting song battle , my choice would have been to have them in a sax battle as they do have faster paced songs where the sax really takes over. I’ve heard of Magnetic Fields , but not familiar with their music but I did like the song. Will have to go with the home team on this one it’s Morphine for me.
Thanks guys ... From the lyrical cues I would assume ' The night ' was inspired by a failed relationship .. One expects to hear " I can't make it on my own " when you hear the phrase but he instead sings ..." I CAN make it on my own " through-out the song . It's a nice unexpected touch !
I hear what you're getting at, but the lyric is 'cant' - Mark's just sunk down into the mix, and sings with such a lacquered affect, that 't' sound never shows. And contextually, 'I hope you're waitin for me, 'cause I cant make it on my own' - the ''cause' would make no sense with 'can'; if it was 'can', the proper partner would be 'but'.
oh ok .. ( two years later ! ) : just googled the lyrics .. you ARE correct ... all this time I thought it was odd it sounded like he was singing ' can ' ! Thanks Mitch ....@@Mitch_Feral
hey guys love The National reference, i hear the singer was inspired by a wonderful aussie artist Conway Savage his material is hard to find. He played the keys in Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds for years and passed a few years back, give him a listen would love a reaction to his first EP i think its self titled 4 track, also this album by Morphine is perfect i hope you guys listen to the whole thing, cheers enjoy.
R.I.P. Mark
I still miss you every god-damned day!!
Great one!
Morphine. Lord save us they're fabulous. Thank you for the play. I'll like and comment on any Morphine to which you react.
Appreciate it Ben!

Thanks Phil! We do have a Tindersticks top 10 up
Got to agree... They were very underrated and really deserved to be better known. Watching Dana play two sax's at the same time still blows my mind.
The National is basically Morphine 2. I mean this as a high compliment.
Thanks for Watching!

Really enjoyed them Mickey!
Morphine is one of the best bands of the '90s. Definitely worth exploring their catalog.
Wow high praise, will check it out!

Morphine is just an incredible band. Deep and often fun too.
Thanks for watching Joe!
Epitaph for My Heart is a Top 10 Magnetic Fields song.
It is good for sure. Thanks!
You should expect the sax :)) Morphine's sound is built around the sax
haha well obviously had never heard them. Thanks G!
@@ReactionsToTheClassics React to Buena. Or any song from Cure For Pain. Brilliant album
Hope you react to more Magnetic Fields, they're incredible.
Hope to at some point for sure. Thanks!
It is all about Mark and Morphine. It being all, and all being it.
It is great
Thanks guys ...

Great catch on that. Thanks for bringing these!

The Morphine song reminds a lot of some Nick Cave
Great point! Thanks Trent!
