How Indians Handle Millions Of Tons Of Temple Offerings | World Wide Waste

  • Worshippers in India buy thousands of tons of flowers every day to give as offerings in temples. The rituals leave behind mountains of flower waste that often end up contaminating already troubled rivers with pesticides and harmful chemicals. One business is taking that waste and turning it into products like natural dyes used in garments that have been sold by Anthropologie; others are making fragrances and incense sticks.

Coming from a perspective from growing up in religion, reusing and recycling these offerings seems more respectful to the planet that the gods watch over. Why pollute the nature that the gods carefully created? These people are caring about nature and, in the process, are respecting the gifts given to them by the gods. And the way they're reusing the flowers and everything really feels so much better from a god's point of view than just throwing it in the river. I mean, the flowers into incense? That's perfect and still goes to the gods. I love it.

@vander9678 Good clothing used to be in that price range. Sweatshops and fast fashion have ruined our world's appreciation for well-made garments. It takes money to pay for the time and effort contributed by artisans, as well as better supplies for them to work with.
For example, a $35 Wal-Mart purse worn daily would fall apart in as little as a few months. A $300 Coach purse will last at least a decade, and has a lifetime repair warranty. The price may seem steep to us, but over time, it actually costs MORE money to buy the cheap and easy stuff instead.

It's so insane. The Harappan people who created Indian as a culture had sewers, baths, and plumbing four thousand years ago. They based their society on cleanliness and are known for having well-built thoughtfully planned out cities and homes. Their urban planning was literally thousands of years ahead of most of the world. They were already trading goods that would make it to what would be Europe eventually.
And now this is what India has become. The most overpopulated and polluted country in the world. The top three most polluted countries are India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Which were all one country until the British decided to destroy a country out of spite.

This is what Colonialism and "Industrialization" have done. Destroyed native industries and skills in order to introduce machines to extract work from people like it's a resource. India and China used to produce high quality fabric at the cheapest prices as their default exports. Now we have the cheapest fabrics made for synthetic trash at low to high prices with higher quality fabrics being exclusive to the wealthy. Is it really such a bad thing if China and India are working together to regain their lost status? America seems to think so. But then again, America and Britain have shoehorned us into capitalism where we can no longer survive without being slaves to an exploitative organization and work 9-5 while they also attempt to control their brand image through you by censoring every aspect of your life and what you can post, wear or say.

Buddha was a Hindu. So theirs will be similar to us, with their unique distinction.
Buddha doesn't believe in god, but we do. Hence you cannot compare us.
If you respect Buddhism kindly stick to it. This is the Hindu practice for eons. We fared fine till now.
If you still wish to show concern for pollution, do so at the notorious industrial effluents which started to suffocate our rivers in the past few decades (before which the rivers were fine) . Because they're the true reason for the miserable plight. Not temple wastes.

@@aryankushwaha1964you do realise that those rivers are ecosystems for millions of life forms, like fish, turtles, algae, frogs etc. Moreover, wildlife also consume that water. So yea, shaneintegra isn't wrong. What is wrong is the practice of polluting the rivers.....
